Use a Playwright locator to wait for the page condition you need, then take the screenshot. For new Python code, prefer locator.wait_for() over the older page.wait_for_selector(); Playwright documents locator-based waiting as its recommended approach. The example below waits until #ready is visible and saves a PNG.
Install Playwright and its browser
Install the Python package and the browser binary you intend to launch. The official Playwright Python guide covers installation. Keep the browser choice in your code consistent with the browser you installed.
pip install playwright
playwright install chromium
The commands install Chromium for the example below. If your project uses a different supported browser, install that browser and launch the corresponding Playwright browser object.
Wait for a selector, then capture the page
This synchronous example navigates to a page, waits for #ready to become visible, and saves the current viewport as screenshot.png.

from playwright.sync_api import sync_playwright
with sync_playwright() as p:
browser = p.chromium.launch()
page = browser.new_page()
page.goto("https://example.com")
target = page.locator("#ready")
target.wait_for(state="visible")
page.screenshot(path="screenshot.png")
browser.close()
Replace the example URL and selector with the page and element you need. page.locator() accepts the CSS selector directly, and locators resolve the target when used, which makes them useful on pages that re-render.
Use the state that matches your goal
locator.wait_for() supports attached, detached, visible, and hidden. Its default is visible. A visible element has a non-empty bounding box and is not hidden with visibility:hidden; elements with no content or display:none are not considered visible. See the Python Locator API.

- Use
visiblewhen the screenshot needs to show the target. - Use
attachedwhen the element only needs to exist in the DOM. - Use
hiddenordetachedwhen you need to wait for a loading indicator or overlay to go away.
If the selector can match several elements, narrow it to the particular element whose state matters. For meaning-based targets, Playwright also offers locators such as get_by_role(), get_by_text(), and get_by_label(); see the locator guide.
Set a suitable timeout
The documented default locator wait timeout is 30 seconds. You can choose a different bound for a particular wait:

target = page.locator("#results-loaded")
target.wait_for(state="visible", timeout=10_000)
page.screenshot(path="results.png", full_page=True)
Here, 10 seconds is an example setting, not Playwright’s default. If the requested state does not occur before the timeout, Playwright raises a timeout error. Choose a limit that fits the page’s expected behavior and investigate a timeout rather than hiding it with an arbitrary delay.
Choose what the screenshot includes
The basic page.screenshot() captures the current viewport. Add full_page=True to capture the full scrollable page:

page.screenshot(path="full-page.png", full_page=True)
To capture only the area occupied by a locator, use its screenshot method:
page.locator(".header").screenshot(path="header.png")
| Capture method | What it captures | Useful considerations |
|---|---|---|
page.screenshot() |
The current viewport by default; the full scrollable page with full_page=True. |
Choose full-page capture when content below the fold must be included. |
locator.screenshot() |
The area occupied by the selected element. | Playwright scrolls the element into view and waits for actionability. A covering element can still obscure it, and a scrollable element’s screenshot shows only its currently scrolled content. |
These behaviors are documented in the Python screenshots guide and Locator API. If you omit path, the screenshot call returns image bytes that you can pass to another library or tool instead of saving directly to a file.

Use the asynchronous API when your program is async
Keep the async Playwright API consistent: await navigation, locator waiting, and screenshot capture.
import asyncio
from playwright.async_api import async_playwright
async def main():
async with async_playwright() as p:
browser = await p.chromium.launch()
page = await browser.new_page()
await page.goto("https://example.com")
target = page.locator("#ready")
await target.wait_for(state="visible")
await page.screenshot(path="screenshot.png")
await browser.close()
asyncio.run(main())
Use this form inside an asynchronous application; do not omit the await keywords. For standalone synchronous scripts, the synchronous example is simpler.
Common problems and fixes
- The wait times out. Confirm the selector matches the intended page element and that the page reached the expected state. Check whether the target is inside a frame or whether a different state, such as
attached, matches the actual requirement. Set a reasonable timeout instead of substituting a fixed sleep. - The screenshot is blank or missing content. Waiting for a selector only confirms that selector’s chosen state; it does not prove that every other part of the page has finished rendering. Wait for a more meaningful page-specific element or state before capture.
- The element screenshot is obscured or incomplete. Check for overlays covering the element. If it is internally scrollable, the locator screenshot captures only its currently scrolled content; a page screenshot may better match the intended scope.
- The browser fails to launch. Install the browser binary for the browser referenced in the script using Playwright’s installation instructions, then confirm that the project is running in an environment where that browser can launch.
- You are using
page.wait_for_selector()in new code. That API remains documented, but Playwright discourages it for new code. Prefer a locator and itswait_for()method or a web-first assertion; details are in the Page API.
Or skip the browser setup
For a hosted screenshot instead of managing Playwright and browser binaries, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return an image or PDF. Its API accepts parameters used by other screenshot APIs as well, which can make switching straightforward. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
