The essentials are a stable internet connection, a device and encoder that can send your content to the platform, and a quick test to confirm the picture, sound, and stream health. What else you need depends on whether you’re streaming gameplay, a screen, a presentation, or yourself on camera.
What you need to start
Twitch’s official FAQ boils the basics down to a stable internet connection and a video encoder—a tool that broadcasts video online. An encoder can be software or a device; Twitch gives examples including OBS, its mobile app, and gaming consoles. The right setup depends on your content and destination platform. - A device and encoder: Use a computer with streaming software, a phone with a compatible streaming app, or a console’s built-in broadcast option, depending on your platform and format.
- A stable connection: The upload connection must sustain the stream settings you choose.
- A content source: This might be a game, camera, screen, or another source the encoder can capture.
- A platform and an enabled account: Choose where to stream and check that platform’s current account and live-streaming requirements. Those rules can vary by service, location, and account status.
Do you need a microphone, camera, or powerful computer?
Microphone
A microphone is optional if you are not speaking. If you want viewers to hear commentary, conversation, or narration, you need an audio input and should confirm the encoder is using it. Twitch explicitly says a mic is not required to stream. Twitch’s streaming FAQ
Camera

Computer
You do not need a high-end computer in every case. A phone or console may provide the broadcast path, and a computer’s requirements depend on what it must encode and capture. If you use streaming software, test it with the actual game or sources you plan to broadcast; a setup that works for a simple screen share may not be suitable for a demanding game and multiple sources. Choose settings your connection can sustain
Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for the platform and the upload connection—not simply for the highest quality your device can select. YouTube recommends choosing quality that results in a reliable stream for your connection and advises running a speed test. Its recommended bitrate varies with codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends an H.264 bitrate of 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Leave headroom for network variation and choose a lower output if your connection cannot reliably support the target.

Preflight: test before the real broadcast
- Pick the platform and broadcast path. Decide whether you will encode from a computer, phone, or console, and make sure it supports your intended content and destination.
- Check the upload connection. Run a speed test, then choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate appropriate to the platform and a connection you can sustain.
- Verify sources and audio. Confirm the intended game, camera, or screen is visible. If you plan to speak, check that the correct microphone is selected and not muted; listen for the expected audio.
- Make a representative test. Include the kind of movement and sound the real stream will have, rather than testing only a static screen. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health. YouTube encoder guidance
- Watch stream health and adjust. If the stream cannot sustain its settings, reduce quality and test again. Start with a simple scene; add overlays, capture, lighting, or control gear only when your format needs them.
Equipment that can wait
Optional equipment should solve a specific problem in your format. A webcam and lighting are for streams where you want to appear on camera. A microphone matters for spoken audio. A capture card may be needed for some console-to-computer workflows, while overlays and physical controls are production choices rather than universal requirements. Platform account eligibility and live-streaming rules are not identical, and they can change; check the current requirements for your chosen service and location rather than assuming that access to an encoder means your account is eligible. A technically healthy stream can still run into platform or rights issues.
