When Loki screenshot tests fail in GitHub Actions, first identify the exact failed workflow step; do not immediately update reference images. Confirm Storybook is running before Loki starts, compare the configured browser and runner environment with local, then check for changed baselines, asynchronous rendering, or animation. Keep the failed screenshots and logs so you can tell a genuine visual change from an environment or setup problem.
1. Find which workflow step failed
Open the failed GitHub Actions run and expand the failed step. Determine whether the failure occurred while installing dependencies, starting Storybook, launching a browser, reaching the app, or comparing screenshots. A Loki comparison failure calls for different investigation than a Storybook startup or browser-launch error.
GitHub-hosted runner setup logs record runner-image details and link to information about preinstalled tools. If the normal output is inconclusive, enable workflow debug logging or use the relevant tool’s verbose option. See GitHub’s workflow run logs documentation.
2. Make sure Storybook is ready before Loki runs
Loki does not start Storybook for you. The project documentation explicitly says that Storybook and any simulator or emulator must already be up and running before tests begin: Loki documentation. Check the workflow order and Loki’s configured Storybook URL, and inspect the startup step’s output to verify the server became available before the test command ran.

- If Storybook failed to start, fix that earlier step rather than changing snapshots.
- If Loki cannot reach Storybook, check the configured URL and whether the server is listening in the environment where Loki runs.
- If the workflow starts Storybook asynchronously, make sure the test step waits for readiness instead of merely starting the process.
3. Check the browser target and compare CI with local
Check the Loki configuration to see which browser target the workflow uses. Loki lists Chrome in Docker as its recommended target; it also lists local Chrome, AWS Lambda, iOS Simulator, and Android Emulator targets. The right choice depends on your project configuration. A mismatch between local and CI targets is a reason to compare the environments, not proof of the cause.
The getting-started page lists Docker as an optional dependency for chrome.docker, Chrome 59 or later for chrome.app, and Node 16 or later. These are requirements stated in the cited Loki documentation, not a guarantee of compatibility for every Loki release. Check the requirements for the version pinned by your project: Loki getting started.

Record these values for both a local run and CI, then change one at a time:
- Loki and Storybook versions
- Loki browser target and browser or container version
- GitHub runner image and operating environment
- Storybook URL and evidence that it was ready
- Reference-image revision
- Story data, readiness behavior, and animation state
- Chrome concurrency
A Loki community discussion describes small position differences after a Chromium upgrade and a local-pass/CI-fail case; a reply suggests matching the Docker/browser approach and trying chromeConcurrency of 1 or 2. This is anecdotal advice, not an official guarantee or a universal fix. Use it as a reason to run a controlled comparison, not as a substitute for checking your own logs and configuration: Loki discussion about Chromium differences.

4. Check reference images before updating them
Loki’s documented workflow uses yarn loki update to create reference images and yarn loki test to compare current output. Review the current, reference, and difference images to determine whether the change is intentional. Reference images are ordinarily kept in the repository; Loki also documents Git LFS as an option. Do not automatically approve a failing run: first establish that the visual change is expected. See Loki’s documentation.
5. Stabilize stories that render asynchronously or animate
Wait for asynchronous content
A story that fetches data or rerenders asynchronously can be captured before it reaches its intended state. Loki documents an asynchronous callback pattern using @loki/create-async-callback so the story can signal that it is ready. Apply the documented pattern when a screenshot is taken too early, rather than relying on an arbitrary delay: Loki flaky tests documentation.

Remove or control animation
Loki disables common CSS transitions and animations and requestAnimationFrame by default, but its documentation identifies limitations including looping requestAnimationFrame, GIFs, SVG animations, native Lottie, and React Native’s Animated library. Disable or control those effects in stories when they make the captured frame vary between runs. If a story cannot sensibly be tested as a static frame, Loki documents skipping it with loki: { skip: true }. See the same Loki guide.
6. Preserve screenshots and test output for diagnosis
Upload failure screenshots, test results, and relevant logs as GitHub Actions artifacts. Artifacts retain files produced during a workflow run after the job ends and can make them available to another job; GitHub lists test results and screenshots as examples. This gives you evidence to compare without rerunning blindly: GitHub artifact documentation.

For capturing a page screenshot outside a Loki visual-regression workflow, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. It does not replace Loki’s Storybook baselines or diagnose a failing GitHub Actions job.
With an API key, this cURL request captures the target page:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo removes known cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot and PDF-capture tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

FAQ
Should I update Loki references whenever CI fails?
No. First inspect the failed step and image differences. Update references only after confirming the visual change is intended.
Does a local pass prove the GitHub Actions failure is a false alarm?
No. Local and CI can differ in browser target, browser or container version, runner image, and other settings. Compare those details and the rendered output before deciding.
