BrowserCat’s public documentation reviewed for this guide does not specify a numeric API rate limit or a general retry contract. A documented reason requests can be rejected is reaching your account’s hard spending limit without approving an increase. Check billing, live service status, and connection setup before treating a failure as rate limiting.
Does BrowserCat publish an API rate limit?
BrowserCat’s pricing page lists concurrent request capacity, but does not define that figure as requests per second or minute, a burst allowance, or an API-wide rate limit. It also does not establish a BrowserCat-specific throttling status code, Retry-After header, or retry schedule in the public materials reviewed. See BrowserCat pricing.
That distinction matters: concurrency describes how many requests may be active at once; it does not by itself tell you how many requests you can send over a time window. Don’t assume a rejection is a rate-limit response unless the actual error and current BrowserCat documentation support that conclusion.
Why might BrowserCat reject requests?
An account hard spending limit
BrowserCat’s FAQ says successful Utility API calls consume one credit. It describes a soft limit that prompts an approval request for an incremental increase and a hard limit that can block requests if the increase is not approved. The block continues until the billing period ends or the account holder approves the increase. This is a documented account and billing restriction, not evidence of API rate throttling. Check the BrowserCat FAQ and your account’s current billing state.

Other connection or session failures
A failed request or browser session can have a cause that the public materials reviewed here do not establish. Record the error details and check service status and connection configuration rather than guessing at a rate limit.
What to check when BrowserCat requests fail
- Classify the failure. Note the endpoint, timestamp, request path, response status and body if present, and whether the failure occurred while opening the WebSocket connection or after a browser session began. Keep API keys and other secrets out of logs and support messages.
- Check usage and billing. Review the BrowserCat dashboard and billing state. If the account hit its hard limit, follow the account prompt to approve an increase or wait for the billing period to end, as applicable to the account. BrowserCat recommends the dashboard for monitoring usage and billing in its quick-start guide.
- Check the live status page. Look at Browser Fleet (Websocket API) and Utility Endpoints (REST API) on BrowserCat status. The page’s September 29, 2026 snapshot listed both as operational; that dated snapshot is not a guarantee of present status.
- Verify connection configuration. BrowserCat’s quick start shows Playwright connecting to
wss://api.browsercat.com/connectwith anApi-Keyheader. Compare your setup with the current quick start, including the endpoint and key header. - Ask BrowserCat if the cause remains unclear. The reviewed public sources do not establish a universal rate-limit response or retry policy. Share the timestamp, endpoint, sanitized error details, and relevant request path with support—never the API key.
How to connect with Playwright
BrowserCat’s quick start recommends Playwright and documents the WebSocket endpoint and API-key header. Use the current quick-start instructions for complete, runnable setup code and any SDK-specific details: BrowserCat quick start. If your connection fails, determine whether it failed during WebSocket setup or later in the session, then use the troubleshooting checks above.

For screenshot capture rather than managing a browser session, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. For example, using its documented cURL pattern:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with screenshot, page-info, and PDF-capture tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
