1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse page.keyboard.press(key, options) for a named key or special key, page.keyboard.type(text, options) for text, and down() plus up() when a key must stay held across actions. Their options and event timing differ, so choosing the method that matches the interaction is essential.
Choose the Puppeteer keyboard method for the task
| What you need | Method | Behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Enter ordinary text | keyboard.type(text, options) |
Sends a keyboard-event sequence for each character. Its optional delay is between key presses and defaults to 0. |
| Press a named or special key | keyboard.press(key, options) |
A convenience operation that presses and releases the key. Examples include ArrowLeft, Control, and ArrowDown. |
| Hold a key or modifier across actions | keyboard.down(key, options), then keyboard.up(key) |
Starts and ends a held key. This is useful for combinations such as holding Shift while moving a text selection. |
| Send character input without keydown and keyup | keyboard.sendCharacter(char) |
Emits keypress and input events only; it is not equivalent to press(). |
Puppeteer describes Keyboard as a virtual keyboard. type() is the higher-level text-entry method, while down(), up(), and sendCharacter() provide more control over the events. See the Keyboard class documentation.
Use press() for a key, not a string of text
press() is a shortcut for down() followed by up(). Use it for a named key such as Enter, Backspace, or an arrow key, rather than as the normal way to enter a word.
await page.keyboard.press('ArrowLeft');
await page.keyboard.press('Backspace');
The current API page documents these KeyPressOptions properties:

- FULL-SIZED CONVENIENCE: The standard QWERTY layout of this keyboard set offers a familiar typing experience, ideal for both professional tasks and personal use.
text: when specified, generates an input event with this text.delay: milliseconds to wait between keydown and keyup. It defaults to0.commands: command names for keyboard shortcuts, with valid names referenced to Chromium source code.
For example, a delay on press() is the pause between keydown and keyup:
await page.keyboard.press('Enter', {delay: 100});
See Puppeteer’s KeyPressOptions reference and its KeyInput type for accepted key names. The surfaced API material includes examples such as ArrowLeft, Control, ArrowDown, and KeyA; it does not establish a complete key-name list here, so consult the type reference rather than relying on an assumed list.

Use type() to enter text
type(text, options) sends a keyboard-event sequence for each character in the string. Its delay option defaults to 0 and specifies the time between key presses:
await page.keyboard.type('Hello');
await page.keyboard.type('World', {delay: 100});
The delay here is not the same timing interval as press()‘s delay: type() spaces character presses, while press() waits between that key’s down and up events.

Held modifiers do not transform the string passed to type(). For example, holding Shift does not make type('hello') produce uppercase text. Use the text you intend to enter directly, or use explicit key actions when the interaction requires modifier behavior.
Hold and release keys with down() and up()
Use down() to begin holding a key and up() to release it. Modifier state remains active for subsequent key presses until released. Repeating down() for a key that is already held sets its repeat state, so pair held-key actions with a release when the interaction is complete.

To select text by holding Shift while moving left, then delete the selection:
await page.keyboard.down('Shift');
await page.keyboard.press('ArrowLeft');
await page.keyboard.press('ArrowLeft');
await page.keyboard.up('Shift');
await page.keyboard.press('Backspace');
Shift affects down() and press() behavior, but not the text produced by type(). The Keyboard class reference documents this held-key pattern.

When to use sendCharacter()
sendCharacter(char) generates keypress and input events without generating keydown or keyup. Choose it only when that event pattern is what the page interaction needs; for a normal named-key action use press(), and for ordinary text use type(). The distinction matters for pages that respond specifically to keydown or keyup listeners.
macOS shortcut limitation
Puppeteer’s Keyboard class documentation warns that macOS shortcuts such as Command+A for Select All do not work through this API and points to issue 1313. This is a documented macOS limitation; it should not be generalized to all platforms. The current status of issue 1313 is not established by the cited class page, so do not assume a workaround from this note alone.
Check the API version that matches your installation
Puppeteer’s surfaced API pages show different version labels: the Keyboard class page is labeled 25.3.0, press() 25.10.0, type() 25.9.0, down() 25.11.0, and the broader API reference 25.12.0. These are not a synchronized release snapshot. Confirm the method and options against the documentation for the Puppeteer version installed in your project, especially before depending on newer options.
Troubleshoot common keyboard issues
- Text does not become uppercase when Shift is held: this is expected for
type(); held modifiers do not alter the string. Provide uppercase text directly or use explicit key actions where appropriate. - A modifier seems to remain active: release it with
keyboard.up('Shift')or the matching key after the intended actions. - A key appears to repeat: repeated
down()calls on an already-held key set repeat. Check that the key is released withup(). - A shortcut does not work on macOS: the Keyboard class page specifically notes that shortcuts such as Command+A for Select All do not work through this API; the cited documentation does not establish a workaround.
- A key name or option is rejected: check the installed Puppeteer version and the official KeyInput type and KeyPressOptions reference rather than guessing accepted values.

If the goal is a clean screenshot rather than testing a keyboard interaction, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single request can capture a page as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, using the API’s documented cURL pattern:
Recommended Free Tools
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. Before capture, it accepts cookie/consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
