1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFrontend developers need functional tests to check that interfaces behave as expected when people use them—and to catch important workflows that break as an application changes. A test that submits a form and checks for the right confirmation can verify a specific behavior; it cannot prove that the whole product works or is fully accessible. The strongest practical approach uses many focused component tests and a smaller set of browser-based tests for critical user journeys.
What functional testing checks
Functional testing asks whether a feature or system does what it is supposed to do. In a web application, that can mean performing an action in the interface and checking the resulting state: enter invalid information in a form, submit it, and verify that an understandable validation message appears. Playwright describes tests in these terms: perform actions and assert that the resulting state matches expectations. Selenium likewise frames functional testing around checking whether a feature functions properly.
The scope matters. A test can check a single mounted component, interactions among modules, or a browser workflow that crosses application layers. A passing test establishes evidence about the behavior and scope it actually covers—not proof that every part of the application works.
Why it matters in frontend work
It checks behavior people can see
A browser test can visit a page, click a button, enter information, and check what appears afterward. Playwright recommends testing rendered, user-visible behavior rather than relying on implementation details such as internal function names or CSS classes. That keeps a test tied to the user’s task: for example, checking that a submitted form displays its confirmation, rather than that a particular helper function ran.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
It can catch regressions in important journeys
A small interface change can disrupt a larger task: navigation may stop leading to the expected page, a purchase step may fail to preserve state, or a sign-in flow may not complete. Cypress identifies authentication, purchasing, and data persistence across screens as common end-to-end scenarios; Selenium uses an online purchase workflow as an integration-test example. Tests should prioritize the journeys whose failure would prevent users from completing a meaningful task.
It checks connected behavior, not only isolated controls
A component test can give a form or date picker focused coverage, but it does not establish that all the application’s layers work together. An end-to-end test can exercise a connected workflow, often including a backend, but costs more to set up and maintain. These scopes answer different questions, so neither should be treated as a substitute for the other.

It gives repeatable feedback, with limits
Playwright’s automatic actionability checks and retrying assertions are designed to reduce manual waits and race-prone checks. Its guidance also recommends isolating tests so one test’s browser state or data does not affect another. These are useful framework capabilities and practices, not a guarantee that a particular suite will be fast or free of flaky failures.
It can help surface accessibility issues early
Cypress and Playwright describe automated accessibility checks that can detect some rule violations, such as missing labels or contrast problems. Automated scans only catch issues their rules can detect; they do not establish that an interface is fully accessible. Pair them with explicit assertions, manual assessment, and testing with people who use the product.

Choose a test scope that matches the question
| Scope | What it checks | Useful examples | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|---|---|
| Component | Behavior of one mounted component | Form states, date-picker cases, design-system components | Whether every application layer works together |
| Integration | Whether included modules or services interact as expected | A multi-step form; order and payment behavior | Behavior outside the components and dependencies in scope |
| End to end | A browser workflow through application layers, often including a backend | Sign-in, checkout, data that persists across screens | Every possible workflow or condition; these tests also bring more setup and maintenance |
| Accessibility checks | Specific detectable accessibility rules and behaviors, layered onto other tests | Labels, keyboard navigation, expected accessible names | That the interface is fully accessible |
Cypress documents the tradeoffs between component and end-to-end coverage. Selenium describes integration tests as checking whether modules work together and end-to-end tests as exercising an integrated product in an environment similar to production. The exact boundary depends on what a team includes in a test.
Build a useful starting suite
- Choose a few important user-visible workflows. Start with tasks such as submitting a form, reaching a key page, signing in, or completing a purchase if the product supports it. Avoid trying to run every low-level case through a full browser journey.
- Assert the outcome that matters. Check a visible confirmation, updated value, enabled control, or meaningful destination. Prefer locators grounded in the interface—such as accessible roles and names—over selectors tied to incidental implementation details.
- Keep tests independent. Use controlled data and state, and avoid depending on a previous test’s browser session or side effects. Independence makes failures easier to reproduce and debug.
- Use component tests for isolated cases and end-to-end tests for connected journeys. This gives focused checks to individual controls without making every edge case depend on a full application stack.
- Add accessibility checks as one layer. Include automated scans and explicit behavior checks, then retain manual assessment and inclusive user testing for concerns automation cannot settle.
- Investigate failures before changing the test or product. Decide whether the failure is a real regression or a fragile assumption in the test. Browser differences, application state, complexity, and dependencies can all complicate functional automation.
Choose a browser-testing framework for your constraints
Cypress, Playwright, and Selenium are all relevant browser-testing options; the available official guidance does not establish a universal winner or a neutral performance benchmark. Compare them against the team’s language and frontend stack, required browser coverage and test scope, CI and backend setup, isolation and debugging workflow, and the infrastructure and maintenance the team can support. Cypress notes that browser end-to-end tests can be harder to set up, run, and maintain. Selenium cautions that no single testing approach fits every situation.

Functional tests are not screenshots
A screenshot records how a page looks at a moment; it does not show that a button responds, a form validates correctly, or a workflow preserves state. Screenshot capture can complement visual review, but it is not a replacement for interaction tests or accessibility assessment. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a functional-testing framework.
