Four Visual Testing Capabilities You May Not Know About

Visual testing compares rendered interfaces with approved baselines. Learn four useful capabilities, how to choose browser and viewport coverage, and why diffs need human review.

Visual testing compares a rendered page or interface state with an approved baseline, helping teams spot appearance changes that functional checks may miss. The most useful capabilities go beyond a single screenshot: teams can catch regressions, compare selected browsers, check responsive widths, and send differences to human review.

What visual testing checks

A visual test captures a screen or page at a chosen checkpoint and compares it with a previously approved rendering. The comparison surfaces visible differences for a person to inspect; it does not, by itself, establish that a change is a defect. Applitools describes screenshot checkpoints compared with stored baselines, while BrowserStack Percy describes page snapshots compared with previously approved versions (Applitools documentation; Percy documentation).

Visual checks complement functional tests. A functional test can verify that a button works or a form submits, while a visual comparison can reveal that the button moved, a heading wrapped unexpectedly, or a page element no longer appears as intended. Neither kind of check replaces the other.

1. Catch visual regressions against a baseline

Once a team has an approved rendering for a relevant page state, later captures can be compared against it. A difference flags a change in appearance for review. If the change is an intended redesign, approve it as the new baseline; if it reflects a defect, fix the interface and keep the approved baseline.

  • WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents

This is useful for changes that may not break page behavior but still affect what users see: spacing shifts, unexpected typography, missing elements, or altered colors. The baseline must represent the state the team actually intends to preserve. If it is outdated or captured under different conditions, comparisons can raise irrelevant differences.

2. Compare browsers and rendering environments

The same interface can render differently across browsers and operating systems. Fonts, form controls, scrollbars, and layout behavior can vary, so a page that looks correct in one environment may have a visible issue in another. Percy lets teams select browsers and review the resulting snapshots and diffs (Percy documentation).

  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors

Choose browser and operating-system combinations according to the environments that matter to your audience, rather than trying to cover every possible configuration by default. In Percy, each selected browser produces a separate screenshot, and browser-specific rendering differences can affect the number of visual differences shown (Percy documentation).

3. Check responsive layouts at selected widths

Responsive visual tests capture the same page at chosen viewport widths, such as mobile, tablet, and desktop sizes. Percy supports supplying responsive breakpoint widths so teams can inspect how a layout changes at those points (Percy documentation).

  • In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
  • Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.

Use widths that correspond to the way your product’s layout behaves and the devices your audience uses. A test at a narrow width can reveal clipped content or awkward wrapping; a larger width can expose spacing or alignment problems. Each responsive width adds another snapshot to render and review, so pick informative checkpoints rather than accumulating widths without a reason.

4. Route visual changes through human review

A visual diff is evidence of a change, not a verdict that something is broken. A new illustration, revised headline, or intentional layout update may be correct; a missing image or shifted control may not be. Reviewers need enough context to distinguish planned work from regressions.

Percy supports approving snapshots, groups, or builds, while Applitools describes reviewing detected differences and accepting or rejecting them (Percy documentation; Applitools documentation). A sound workflow assigns review to someone who can judge the change against the design or product intent, then updates the baseline only when the new appearance is expected.

How to choose coverage without overwhelming review

More browser configurations and viewport widths can reveal more environment-specific issues, but they also produce more snapshots to render and inspect. Start with the browsers, operating systems, and responsive widths that reflect your audience and product requirements. Expand coverage when there is a concrete reason, such as a supported browser or a layout breakpoint with a history of defects.

When evaluating visual testing tools, compare the baseline capture and approval workflow, browser and operating-system configuration, responsive-width setup, and how differences are presented for review. Available product descriptions explain workflows, but they do not establish an independent ranking of vendors for accuracy, cost, or speed.

Product examples and a screenshot API alternative

BrowserStack Percy documents screenshot baselines, responsive widths, browser selection, and approval workflows. Applitools documents screenshot checkpoints, comparison with stored baselines, and review of detected differences. These are examples of visual UI testing workflows, not evidence that one vendor is independently superior.

GrowthBook describes a visual editor for changing page copy, images, and layout, previewing variations, and running experiments. Its company blog described the AI Visual Editor as a Chrome extension in beta when the page was crawled; availability may have changed since then (GrowthBook blog; GrowthBook blog; GrowthBook documentation).

If you need a screenshot API rather than a visual-testing workflow, ScreenshotNeo is an option to try first: it removes known cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed.

Or skip the browser setup

For a one-off capture, you can take a browser screenshot manually. For an API-based capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL in a GET request and returns an image or PDF. Its documentation covers the API options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free.
