Visual regression testing catches unintended changes in how an interface looks by comparing a new screenshot with an approved baseline. Use it alongside functional tests: a test can confirm that a checkout button works while missing that a notification covers it. The practical workflow is to define repeatable UI states, capture them under consistent conditions, compare new captures, and review every difference before updating a baseline.
What visual regression testing catches
Visual tests compare rendered output, not just application behavior. They can reveal layout shifts, missing or obscured content, unexpected styling changes, and differences introduced by a code change. A passing functional assertion does not guarantee a usable presentation: Chromatic’s documentation uses the example of a checkout button visually obscured by a notification. Visual checks complement behavior tests rather than replace them. Chromatic documentation
How the workflow works
- Choose states to protect. Select stable component states, such as Storybook stories, or page states reached through browser tests.
- Capture and approve a baseline. Take screenshots under defined browser, viewport, theme, and interaction conditions. Review the initial snapshots; do not treat automatically created files as approved merely because the first run passed.
- Compare later captures. Re-run the same cases after changes and identify differences from the baseline.
- Review each difference. Decide whether it is an intended design change or an unexpected regression. Update the baseline only for changes the team has deliberately accepted.
Run visual comparisons with Playwright
Playwright Test provides the toHaveScreenshot() assertion. A minimal test takes a screenshot of the current page and compares it with an expected snapshot:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('checkout page matches its approved appearance', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('http://localhost:3000/checkout');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('checkout.png');
});
Use the official Playwright screenshot comparison documentation for setup and configuration details. When an expected screenshot is missing, Playwright can create it during an initial run. Treat that as baseline creation: inspect the rendered result and review the snapshot into version control through your normal change process. A first-run snapshot is not proof that the appearance is correct.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Make the captured state repeatable
- Use a predictable test URL and seed or fixture data so the same content appears on each run.
- Wait for the page and relevant interactions to reach the intended state before asserting the screenshot.
- Keep browser, viewport, theme, and other rendering conditions consistent between baseline and later runs.
- Capture the UI state that matters rather than relying on one screenshot to represent an entire user journey.
Use Storybook stories for component coverage
Storybook stories provide a convenient set of named component states and variants to protect in isolation. Storybook’s visual-testing documentation describes capturing story screenshots and comparing them with earlier versions, and documents an official Chromatic addon. The documented addon page specifies Storybook 7.6 or higher for that addon; check the current documentation for compatibility with your installed version. Storybook visual testing
Stories and end-to-end tests cover different scopes. A story can make a component’s loading, error, or selected state easy to capture directly; an end-to-end test can protect a page state reached through real navigation and interactions. Choose cases based on the failures you need to catch, not on screenshot volume alone.

When hosted visual review fits
Chromatic documents a hosted workflow for Storybook and integrations with Vitest, Playwright, and Cypress. Its Playwright integration captures UI states during end-to-end tests, uploads page archives to its cloud service, and presents changes for review and approval. Chromatic’s documentation also describes comparing snapshots against baselines and accepting or rejecting detected changes. These are vendor-described capabilities, not an independent comparison or endorsement. Chromatic documentation Chromatic Playwright documentation
Choose local assertions when keeping screenshot checks within an existing Playwright workflow is the priority. Consider a hosted review workflow when your team wants centralized comparison and a change-approval process. Before choosing any service, check its current supported integrations, browser and viewport options, review workflow, and usage terms; the available documentation here does not establish a neutral current price comparison.

Capture conditions that affect diffs
A screenshot comparison is only useful if it captures the intended state under comparable conditions. Chromatic documents that snapshots can vary by browser, mobile simulator or emulator, theme, viewport, and other configured options. It also documents that Storybook interaction tests wait for the story’s play function to complete before capture. Its snapshot process describes capture after a network-quiescent phase and an optional delay, applied after Storybook interactions when present. Those timing details describe Chromatic’s implementation, not a universal rule for all visual-testing systems. Chromatic snapshots documentation
- Browser and viewport: Decide which combinations represent supported user experiences. A baseline for one viewport does not establish that other viewport sizes look correct.
- Theme and variants: Include distinct themes or component variants when their appearance matters; do not assume one capture covers them all.
- Interactions: Complete the required interaction before capture. If the state depends on animation, asynchronous data, or a delayed overlay, make the test wait for the intended state rather than taking a screenshot at an arbitrary instant.
- Network and timing: Wait for the relevant content to settle. A tool’s network-idle behavior or optional delay is implementation-specific and may not suit every page.
Review differences without hiding regressions
For each diff, determine whether the changed pixels reflect an intentional design update, a genuine defect, or an inconsistent test environment. Accept a change and update the baseline only when it is intended. If the difference is unexpected, investigate the interface or make the capture state deterministic before changing the baseline. Chromatic’s documented review workflow includes accepting or rejecting visual changes; accepting every diff automatically defeats the purpose of review. Chromatic Playwright documentation

Common problems and practical fixes
- A snapshot appears on the first run: The expected baseline may not exist yet. Inspect the page and deliberately review the generated snapshot before establishing it as the expected result.
- The same test produces different screenshots: Check whether browser, viewport, theme, data, network state, or interaction timing differs between runs. Make those conditions repeatable before accepting new baselines.
- A page screenshot misses a component defect: Add a focused Storybook story or another targeted UI state so the relevant component appears clearly in the capture.
- A visual issue passes functional tests: Add a screenshot assertion for the affected state. Logic-oriented assertions and visual comparisons check different things.
- A diff appears after a design change: Review it as a product change, then update the baseline only after the intended appearance is approved.
Or skip the browser setup
For an individual screenshot or a capture step outside your test runner, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-call screenshot API. It is not a substitute for asserting that your own application matches an approved baseline; use Playwright or a visual-review workflow for that comparison.

Can one screenshot prove that a whole site is visually correct?
No. A capture covers only the state and rendering conditions it represents. Select component states and page states intentionally.
