Consider TestNG when its suite configuration, groups, data providers, dependencies, listeners, or parallel-execution controls address a specific need. AssertJ, Mockito, and Testcontainers can strengthen a test stack, but they are complementary libraries and tools—not direct replacements for a test runner.
There is no evidence here for a universal popularity or speed ranking. The practical choice depends on your Java runtime, existing tests, build and IDE support, and the kinds of tests your team needs to organize.
Java testing frameworks and tools compared
| Option | Best fit | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| JUnit 5 / Jupiter | General-purpose Java testing, especially when you want the JUnit Platform ecosystem and its extension model. | JUnit 5 is an architecture: the Platform provides test execution infrastructure, Jupiter provides the programming and extension model, and Vintage runs legacy JUnit 3 and 4 tests on the Platform. |
| TestNG | Suites that benefit from explicit configuration, groups, data providers, dependencies, listeners, or parallel-execution controls. | A separate testing framework with its own annotations and suite model. |
| Spock | Teams exploring a specification-style JVM testing framework. | A distinct framework; the available information is not enough to make a detailed comparison of its syntax, compatibility, or integrations. |
| AssertJ | Teams that want a fluent assertion style. | An assertion library that can be used with JUnit, TestNG, or another framework—not a test runner. |
| Mockito | Tests that need mocks or other test doubles. | A supporting mocking library, not a test runner. |
| Testcontainers | Tests that need dependencies such as databases running in containers. | A supporting tool for tests involving containerized services, not a unit-test framework. |
Why JUnit 5 is a sensible first evaluation
JUnit 5 separates the mechanism that discovers and launches tests from the API used to write them. The JUnit Platform runs test engines; Jupiter is the standard programming and extension model; and Vintage provides a path for running older JUnit 3 and 4 tests on the Platform. That structure matters when a project has multiple test styles or needs to migrate over time.
The JUnit 5.12.0 User Guide reports a Java 8-or-higher runtime requirement and describes first-class Platform support in popular IDEs and build tools. Treat compatibility as release-specific: verify the requirement for the exact JUnit release and the versions of your IDE and build tool before upgrading.
When to choose Jupiter
- You are starting a conventional Java unit-test suite and want to evaluate the JUnit Platform ecosystem.
- Your team wants the Jupiter programming and extension model.
- You have JUnit 3 or 4 tests and want to assess running them through Vintage while planning migration, rather than assuming they must all be rewritten immediately.
When TestNG may fit better
TestNG is worth evaluating when its suite-management features solve a concrete organizational problem. Its documentation covers XML suite configuration, test groups, data providers, method and group dependencies, listeners, and parallel execution. Those controls can be useful for a large or data-driven suite, but they do not make TestNG a universal upgrade over JUnit.
Choose based on the work your suite must do
- Use groups when you need to select or organize sets of tests.
- Look at data providers when tests need to run against multiple input sets.
- Consider dependencies and listeners if your suite relies on explicit execution relationships or lifecycle hooks.
- Evaluate parallel execution only against your tests’ shared state and external dependencies; the existence of parallel controls does not establish that a particular suite will be safe or faster when run concurrently.
Because TestNG is a separate framework, adopting it means using its own annotations and suite model. Compare that migration or onboarding cost with the specific controls your team needs.

Libraries that complement a test framework
AssertJ for assertions
AssertJ supplies fluent assertions. Add it if its style makes checks clearer for your team; keep JUnit or TestNG as the test framework that runs those checks.
Mockito for mocks
Mockito is a complementary choice when a test needs mocks or test doubles. It does not replace the framework responsible for discovering and executing tests.

Testcontainers can support tests that use services such as databases in containers. It addresses the dependency side of a test, rather than replacing a unit-test runner.
A practical selection process
- Check the Java runtime baseline. Match the exact framework release to the Java versions your developers and deployment environments run. The JUnit 5.12.0 guide reports Java 8 or higher; a JUnit 6.0.0-M2 milestone guide reports Java 17 or higher. The latter is a milestone result, not a blanket statement about every stable JUnit 6 release; confirm current stable-release requirements before adopting it.
- Check build and IDE support. Verify that the specific release works with your project’s build-tool and IDE versions. The JUnit 5.12.0 guide describes first-class Platform support in popular IDEs and build tools, but your actual version combination still needs checking.
- Inventory existing tests. If you have JUnit 3 or 4 tests, investigate Vintage and a staged migration plan before deciding whether a wholesale rewrite is necessary.
- Write down suite requirements. If groups, XML configuration, data providers, dependencies, listeners, or parallel controls are important, compare TestNG’s documented suite model against the way your team works.
- Add supporting tools only for a defined need. Consider AssertJ for assertions, Mockito for mocking, and Testcontainers when tests need containerized services.
- Trial the choice in your real build. Run representative tests through the same build and IDE workflows the team will use, and check compatibility and execution behavior before standardizing.
Common decision mistakes
- Comparing unlike categories: AssertJ, Mockito, and Testcontainers support testing, but none is a direct runner alternative to JUnit or TestNG.
- Choosing by an unsupported ranking: The available sources do not establish which framework is most popular or fastest. Select by fit rather than an unverified market-share or performance claim.
- Assuming a version requirement applies to every release: Runtime requirements change across releases. Confirm the exact stable version you intend to use.
- Rewriting legacy tests prematurely: Vintage may let JUnit 3 and 4 tests run on the JUnit Platform while a team plans its migration.
- Picking a framework for a feature you do not need: TestNG’s suite controls matter when they solve a real workflow requirement; otherwise, they may not justify a separate framework and suite model.
A separate tool for visual website checks
ScreenshotNeo is not a Java testing framework and does not replace JUnit, TestNG, or the supporting libraries above. For developers who also need website screenshots as part of a visual-check workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a separate screenshot API and MCP server.

Its documented product details include accepting cookie or consent banners before capture and removing more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. It bills only clean shots: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot, page-info, and PDF-capture tools for AI agents.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can JUnit run JUnit 4 tests?
The JUnit Vintage engine is intended to run legacy JUnit 3 and 4 tests on the JUnit Platform; check the documentation for the exact release and your build setup.
Best Value
Is TestNG an assertion library?
No. TestNG is a testing framework with its own annotations and suite model. AssertJ is the assertion library in this comparison.
