Agile and DevOps solve related but different problems. Agile guides how teams develop valuable software and adapt to customer needs; DevOps brings technical, process, and cultural capabilities to delivering and operating that software. Teams can use both: Agile shapes the work, while DevOps helps changes move through testing, release, operation, and feedback.
What is the difference between Agile and DevOps?
| Dimension | Agile | DevOps |
|---|---|---|
| Main focus | Developing valuable software while responding to customer needs and change. | Improving the flow and reliability of software delivery and operation through technical, process, and cultural capabilities. |
| Typical concerns | Customer collaboration, planning and reprioritization, working software, team interaction, and reflection. | Integration, testing, release and deployment, operations, monitoring, reliability, and shared learning. |
| Feedback | Frequent working software and regular reflection help teams adapt. | Automated tests, production monitoring, and delivery feedback help teams improve changes and systems. |
| Where it applies | Can guide how a team plans and develops work. | Can extend collaboration and automation across development, release, and operation. |
These are broad descriptions, not a guarantee that every organization uses either label in the same way. Neither term is a specific tool or a complete implementation recipe.
What does Agile mean?
The Agile Manifesto, written in 2001, states four value preferences. It favors individuals and interactions over processes and tools; working software over comprehensive documentation; customer collaboration over contract negotiation; and responding to change over following a plan. The preference does not mean the items on the right have no value; it says the items on the left are valued more. Agile Manifesto
Its principles make the approach more concrete: deliver valuable software early and continuously, welcome changing requirements, deliver working software frequently, have business people and developers cooperate, maintain a sustainable pace, pursue technical excellence and simplicity, and regularly reflect and adjust. Agile is not synonymous with Scrum or fixed-length sprints. Those can be ways of organizing work, but the underlying values and principles are broader.
What does DevOps mean?
DevOps is an approach to improving the path from making a change to delivering and operating it. DORA groups related capabilities into technical, process, and cultural areas. Examples include continuous integration and delivery, automated testing and deployment, monitoring and observability, small batches, customer feedback, visibility of work, experimentation, and a learning-oriented culture. That breadth matters: adopting an automation product alone does not create DevOps, and DevOps is not simply another name for a CI/CD pipeline. Its operational feedback and shared responsibility are part of the picture.
How do Agile and DevOps overlap?
Both favor short feedback loops, frequent delivery, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Agile helps teams decide what to build and adapt as they learn; DevOps capabilities help them integrate, test, release, observe, and improve the software in use. Agile principles explicitly call for frequent working software, while DevOps practices can make that software safer and more practical to deliver regularly.

Continuous delivery is one important connection. DORA defines it as the ability to release changes of all kinds on demand quickly, safely, and sustainably. It keeps software deployable and supplies fast feedback. Continuous delivery does not necessarily mean every build goes live: continuous deployment is the more specific practice in which every build is automatically deployed. Can Agile and DevOps be used together?
Yes. A team can use Agile values and practices to organize development around customer value and changing needs, while using DevOps capabilities to improve testing, delivery, operations, and production feedback. One label does not automatically provide the other’s practices: a team can work iteratively yet struggle to release reliably, or automate releases without responding well to customer feedback.
For example, a team might prioritize a small customer-facing change, implement and review it, run automated tests, release it when ready, then use monitoring and customer feedback to decide what to adjust next. The precise workflow depends on the system and organization; the useful principle is to connect decisions about the work with evidence from its delivery and use.

Start with the bottleneck rather than choosing a label. Discuss how the team gathers and acts on customer feedback, how quickly it produces working software, how changes are tested and released, who operates the system, how production behavior is observed, and whether people learn from failures.

DORA lists change lead time, deployment frequency, change fail percentage, and failed deployment recovery time as software delivery measures, and uses service level objectives to measure reliability. These can help teams examine flow and stability, but no single metric proves that a team is “Agile” or “DevOps.” Interpret measures in context rather than optimizing one number in isolation. If you need a website screenshot as part of an Agile or DevOps workflow, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server. Its clean-shot options accept consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses say which outcome occurred.
One cURL request can save an image:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details. The MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. ScreenshotNeo includes 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, no card required.
