Choose a Python web framework by the shape of the application and how much structure you want: Django is a candidate for a broader web application, Flask for a small composable starting point, FastAPI for an API-focused service, and Pyramid for a general web framework with documented testing and deployment workflows. These are different starting points, not a universal ranking. Before committing, check each project’s current documentation for supported Python versions, features, and test APIs.
How to choose a Python web framework
Start with what you are building, then weigh how much functionality you want the framework to provide versus how much you want to select and assemble yourself. “Full-stack” and “microframework” are shorthand, not quality scores; confirm which capabilities your project actually needs.
- Broader web application: Consider Django when you want a framework intended for building a complete web application. Verify the current documentation against your specific requirements.
- Small, composable web application: Consider Flask if you prefer to begin with a smaller framework and make more explicit choices about components. Check current Flask documentation before relying on particular features or test recipes.
- API-focused service: Consider FastAPI when building an API around Python type hints, OpenAPI, and JSON Schema.
- General web framework: Consider Pyramid if its approach and documented application, deployment, and testing material suit your project.
Then check whether your application needs synchronous or asynchronous request handling, how it will validate data, which database and deployment environment it must support, and what your team already knows. The available evidence does not establish a complete, current feature matrix across all four projects, so compare the exact requirements against their official documentation rather than choosing from labels alone.
How the four frameworks differ
| Framework | Useful starting point | What the available documentation establishes | What to verify for your project |
|---|---|---|---|
| Django | A broader web application where you want a framework with substantial structure. | The release-policy announcement describes a future change to its release schedule; it does not establish a current feature-by-feature comparison with the other frameworks. | Current supported versions, the capabilities you need, and the framework’s current testing guidance. |
| Flask | A smaller, composable web application where you prefer to make explicit component choices. | The Python wiki directory lists Flask in its framework ecosystem, but its release information is dated and is not a reliable source for current features or versions. | Current official documentation for features, supported versions, and test workflows. |
| FastAPI | An API-focused service using Python type hints. | FastAPI describes itself as an API framework based on standard Python type hints and compatible with OpenAPI and JSON Schema. It identifies Starlette for web parts and Pydantic for data parts. FastAPI documentation | Whether its current APIs, dependencies, and sync or async approach fit your service and deployment environment. |
| Pyramid | A general web application where its framework approach and documentation fit your needs. | Its stable documentation includes application tutorials, deployment material, and chapters on unit, integration, and functional testing. Pyramid documentation | Current supported versions and the specific configuration, test, and deployment workflow your application requires. |
Django: consider release support as well as application fit
Django’s release policy is changing, but the new schedule is not already in effect. In an announcement published August 10, 2026, the Django Software Foundation said annual feature releases will begin in January 2028. Each feature release on that schedule will receive one year of mainstream bug fixes and two further years of security and data-loss fixes, for three years of support. The transition table lists Django 6.1 for August 2026 and Django 6.2 LTS for April 2027. The announcement says existing commitments before 2028 remain in effect, including the Django 5.2 LTS and 6.2 LTS commitments. Check the Django release-policy announcement for the schedule and commitments before choosing a version.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
FastAPI: API conventions and project claims
FastAPI’s documented focus is building APIs with standard Python type hints, with OpenAPI and JSON Schema compatibility; it identifies Starlette and Pydantic as underlying components. Its homepage also makes performance and productivity claims. Those are project-authored claims, not independent benchmarks or a guarantee for a particular application, so assess your own workload rather than using the percentages as a framework ranking. Flask and Pyramid: confirm the details you depend on
For Flask, do not use the Python wiki’s dated release information to infer what is current. Use Flask’s current official documentation to confirm features, versions, and testing APIs. For Pyramid, the stable documentation is a direct starting point for learning the framework’s application and testing material; its inclusion of test topics is evidence of documentation coverage, not proof that it is better or worse at testing.

Plan tests by layer, not by framework reputation
A practical test strategy follows the boundaries in the application. Pyramid’s official documentation explicitly covers unit, integration, and functional testing. That provides a useful illustration of the layers, but it does not imply that the same commands or framework-specific test client apply to every framework.
- Unit tests: Test isolated functions and business rules without depending on a running application or external services.
- Integration tests: Test boundaries such as framework routing, data validation, database access, and other components working together.
- Functional or end-to-end tests: Check user-visible behavior through a larger portion of the application, such as a request and its resulting response or workflow.
For each layer, consult the chosen framework’s current official testing documentation for its test client, fixtures, database setup, and supported async behavior. Do not assume that an example written for one framework is portable to another.

Keep pytest setup version-aware
pytest evolves, including changes and deprecations. Its changelog lists pytest 9.1.1 dated June 19, 2026; that is a dated release entry, not a recommendation that every project should install that version. Check the pytest changelog and current documentation for the version your project supports before copying setup instructions or relying on a particular API.
Check deployment and maintenance before committing
A framework choice affects more than request handling. Before implementation, verify the framework’s current deployment guidance and supported Python versions, how its dependencies fit your runtime, whether your team can maintain the chosen architecture, and how your test suite will exercise production-relevant boundaries. Pyramid’s stable documentation includes deployment material; for the other frameworks, consult their current official docs for the deployment path that matches your application. Avoid inferring operational behavior or support timelines from broad framework labels.

Capture website screenshots without building a browser workflow
If a Python web project also needs website screenshots for testing, documentation, or another workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its pre-capture cleanup can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. It bills only clean shots: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the result identified in response headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. See ScreenshotNeo.
Or skip the browser setup
Call the API directly; replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and change the target URL as needed. The response body is the image file.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a framework with more built-in functionality automatically make testing easier?
No. Built-in scope and testing quality are separate considerations; choose test layers and confirm the current framework-specific workflow in its official documentation.
