That changes the image, not the website’s consent state. If you need a capture that reflects a visitor’s choice, click the page’s real reject or preferences control, verify the result, and then capture.
Choose between a clean image and a real consent choice
These are different tasks. For a one-off clean image, use narrowly scoped screenshot-time CSS or mask the known banner. The overlay disappears from the image, but the page has not recorded acceptance or rejection. For a consent-flow test, interact with the actual controls and confirm the expected post-choice state before taking the screenshot. Playwright documents screenshot styling and masking in its Page API; Browserless shows an example of automating consent controls before capture in its cookie-consent documentation.
- Visual cleanup: hide or mask a specific banner for the capture; do not treat that as consent.
- Consent testing: click the intended control and verify the resulting page state.
- Repeated manual browsing: consider browser filtering, while recognizing that coverage and behavior vary.
Hide a known banner only for a Playwright screenshot
First inspect the page in your browser’s developer tools and identify a selector unique to the banner container. Then apply a temporary style or mask that target. Avoid broad selectors matching words such as “cookie,” “popup,” or “overlay”: they can hide unrelated interface or page content. Check the resulting image to make sure the intended content remains visible.
Runnable Node.js example with screenshot-time CSS
Install Playwright and its Chromium browser, then save the following as capture.js. Replace the URL and example selector with the target page and the selector you inspected. The style screenshot option is documented by Playwright; confirm option support against the version installed in your project.

})();The CSS is applied for the screenshot rather than used to make a consent choice. A site may use a different selector, render its banner late, or place it in an embedded frame; inspect the actual page and adjust the approach rather than assuming one selector works everywhere.
Mask the banner instead of changing page styling
If the goal is simply to cover a known region in the image, Playwright’s screenshot mask option can mask a locator. For example, after navigating to the page, use:

}Replace the selector with the inspected banner target. Masking conceals the matched region; it does not remove the banner from the live page or persist a preference. Review the image, since a mask can obscure content that overlaps the selected element.
Capture a genuine consent-flow result
For a test of visitor behavior, use the control the scenario is meant to exercise—such as reject, manage preferences, or accept—and wait for evidence that the action took effect. A CSS hide or mask is not a substitute. Browserless’s example demonstrates trying page controls, but banner markup and button labels are not standardized, so its approach is not a universal handler.

Use a site-specific control and verify the outcome
Inspect the target page for an accessible role and name, or a stable site-specific selector. The example below illustrates rejecting optional cookies and waiting for the banner to become hidden; replace the role/name and post-choice condition to match the site. If the site exposes a preferences panel or a separate confirmation step, automate those steps instead and verify the actual expected state.

For a test that must prove a particular choice was stored, assert the site’s observable consent state as well, such as the expected settings panel state or site-specific preference indicator. Do not assume a cookie name or storage format without inspecting the site.
Browser options for repeated manual browsing
Mozilla Support says its Firefox cookie banner blocker “is not currently available anymore” and points readers to uBlock Origin with the AdGuard/uBO – Cookie Notices filter list. Mozilla’s article describes the former feature as starting in Firefox 120, automatically enabled for users in Germany in Private Browsing Mode, and limited to supported sites with a decline option; that is historical context, not current availability. Browser extensions and filter lists may behave differently across sites, so inspect the result rather than relying on them for a controlled capture.

Troubleshoot captures that still show a banner
- The selector matches nothing: inspect the rendered page and update the selector; do not assume a class or ID is shared between sites.
- The banner appears after the screenshot: wait for the relevant banner or page condition before capturing. A fixed delay can help with a known site, but waiting for a selector or other explicit state is more targeted.
- The banner is inside an iframe: a locator in the main page may not target content in a separate frame. Inspect the frame and use the appropriate frame locator, or test whether the consent UI is managed by the page itself.
- The screenshot loses page content: narrow the CSS or mask to the banner container, then inspect the output at the relevant viewport and full-page dimensions.
- The consent test captures the wrong state: wait for the post-choice condition and assert the expected state before capture; disappearance alone may not prove which choice was applied.
- Navigation times out: check whether the page loaded enough to expose the target, and use a wait condition suited to the site. Do not treat a timed-out or blank capture as a valid result.
Why a universal dismissal rule is unreliable
Consent interfaces vary in markup, wording, and behavior. A 2024 study, “A Large-Scale Study of Cookie Banner Interaction Tools and Their Impact on Users’ Privacy,” reported 483 sites with consent banners and 97 distinct accept-all button labels in its study dataset. Those are study-specific findings, not current totals for the web, but they illustrate why automation often needs site-specific handling. Read the paper.
For comparison, Capture’s own documentation says its blockCookieBanners=true option automatically dismisses consent popups and describes coverage as “most popular cookie consent solutions.” That is the vendor’s capability statement, not an independently verified compatibility guarantee. No. Consent banners use different markup and controls. Inspect each target page and verify the capture or post-choice state.
