A screenshot API can return an old-looking page for three different reasons: the screenshot service reused an earlier image, its browser received cached page content or assets, or the capture happened before JavaScript finished updating the page. A redirect or access error can look stale, too. Check each layer separately; cache controls and parameter names vary by provider.
1. Check whether the screenshot service reused an old image
Some screenshot APIs cache completed captures separately from the target site’s HTTP cache. Check the API’s documentation for a cache switch, a time-to-live setting, or a stale-while-revalidate option. If available, temporarily disable result caching or shorten its lifetime, then request another capture and compare the results.
For example, Screenshot API documents a cache option that defaults to true, a cacheTTL of 86,400 seconds, and a staleTTL of 43,200 seconds. Those are settings for that service, not defaults shared by screenshot APIs. Use its documented syntax only with that provider; do not assume another API accepts the same parameters. Compare cached and fresh requests
- Use the same target URL and capture settings for both requests.
- Make one request with the provider’s documented cache behavior, then another with its documented fresh-capture or cache-bypass setting.
- Compare the image, response headers, capture time, and any reported cache status.
If the images differ, the API’s result cache is a likely cause. If not, continue to the browser and target-site checks below.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Check the target site’s HTTP cache
The browser used by the screenshot service may receive cached HTML, scripts, stylesheets, images, or API responses from the target site or an intermediary cache. Inspect the HTML response and the specific resources that supply the content that looks old. Relevant headers include Cache-Control, ETag, and Last-Modified.
HTTP cache directives and validators govern reuse and revalidation of stored responses. With an ETag, a cache can ask whether its stored representation is still current: a matching validator can yield 304 Not Modified; a changed representation calls for a new response. MDN: HTTP caching
Understand no-cache and no-store
no-cachedoes not mean “never store.” A compliant cache may store the response, but must revalidate it before reuse.no-storeis the directive intended to prohibit storage by compliant caches. It does not, by itself, purge a response already stored by an intermediary.
If you control the site, choose a response policy suited to how often its content changes. For versioned or hashed assets, a long-lived cache can be appropriate because a content change produces a new URL. For content at a stable URL that changes frequently, configure caching and revalidation accordingly. RFC 9111: HTTP Caching

3. Do not confuse browser Fetch settings with screenshot API parameters
When you control the page’s own browser code, the Fetch API has cache modes that affect that fetch. They do not automatically control a separate browser launched by a screenshot service; use them for the screenshot only if the provider explicitly offers equivalent controls.
no-storefetches from the remote server without first looking in the HTTP cache and does not update that cache.no-cacheconditionally revalidates a matching cached entry.force-cachecan return a matching response even when it is stale.
These are Fetch API behaviors, not universal screenshot API options. MDN: Request.cache
4. Check whether the page finished rendering
A screenshot captures a rendered state, not just the initial HTML. If hydration, delayed scripts, or asynchronous requests update visible content after the first paint, a capture taken too early can show an earlier state even when no cache is involved. Configure a wait condition or delay supported by the screenshot service, and choose a condition that corresponds to the content you need.

For example, Cloudflare documents wait-until and timeout controls for its browser screenshots. Its documentation describes the endpoint as rendering a page by processing its HTML and JavaScript before capture. The available controls and exact behavior depend on the provider. Cloudflare Browser Run: Screenshot
5. Rule out redirects, login screens, and access errors
A screenshot of a sign-in page, error view, or access-denied response can be mistaken for an outdated page. Check the final URL and document status after redirects if the API exposes them. A 401 or 403, or a redirect to a sign-in page, points to an access problem rather than proof that a prior screenshot was reused.

6. Use a controlled comparison to isolate the cause
Change one variable at a time. Keep the URL, viewport, locale, cookies, and headers constant while comparing captures; otherwise a different page state may explain the image difference.
- Record the requested URL, capture time, response status, and final URL when available.
- Compare the provider’s cached and fresh paths, if it offers both.
- Inspect the target document and the resources that supply the stale-looking section, including any client-side API response.
- Adjust the provider’s documented wait condition if the section updates after initial rendering.
- Check cookies, authorization, redirects, and access status if the intended page is not appearing.
A fresh screenshot can still contain old information if the target site’s own API, service worker, or application data cache returns old data. The screenshot image alone does not identify which of those mechanisms supplied the content.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Choose an API with controls that match the problem
If you are selecting a provider, compare whether its documentation exposes screenshot-result caching and invalidation, browser request controls, dynamic-page waits, final URL or status visibility, and cookie or authorization support. These capabilities vary; no single cache parameter or purge method works across all screenshot APIs.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its cache feature lets you choose a TTL, and its responses identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. For pages that need cleanup before capture, it accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Its API also supports waits and custom cookies, headers, and authorization. Check the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.
Or skip the browser setup
Make a GET request with the URL to capture. This cURL example saves a WebP image; the API accepts other output formats, including PNG, JPEG, and PDF, as documented.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and parameters. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools, and 1,000 screenshots per month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does adding a random query string always bypass a screenshot API cache?
No. A provider may ignore query parameters when forming its cache key, or the changed URL may alter how the target site responds. Use the API’s documented cache controls instead.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Will clearing my browser cache fix an API screenshot?
Not necessarily. The screenshot service may use its own browser and cache, neither of which is your local browser cache.
Can a screenshot be fresh while some of its content is old?
Yes. The page can load anew while an application API, service worker, or other site-side data cache supplies older content.
