First identify the exact URL named in the warning and determine whether it is the main page or a dependent resource such as an image, stylesheet, font, or script. Then check whether that resource is a valid remote URL, a local file blocked by wkhtmltoimage’s access policy, or a remote host the process genuinely cannot reach.
Start by identifying what failed
Before changing flags, save the complete command, the full standard-error output, wkhtmltoimage --version, the operating system or container, and whether the input is a remote URL or a local HTML file. Note the exact resource URL in the warning. Remove credentials and tokens before sharing logs.
A failed dependent image or stylesheet is different from a failure to load the top-level document. In upstream issue #4408, a user reported a missing relative image followed by an about:blank / ProtocolUnknownError message and exit code 1; that is one report, not evidence that every such error has the same cause. Read the issue report.
Validate the URL and its base
Check the failing address itself, not only the page supplied as the command input. Confirm the scheme, hostname, port, path, and any redirect target. For relative image or stylesheet paths, verify the base URL against which the path is resolved. For a local resource, confirm the file exists and that its path syntax matches the operating system.

On Windows, malformed local path forms have appeared in issue reports. Also distinguish the named input HTML file from other local files it references: local-file restrictions concern dependent-file access, and allowing the input file does not necessarily allow the page to read its local images or stylesheets. See the historical Windows path issue, which was marked fixed in 0.12.2.
For local resources, check file-access policy
wkhtmltoimage documents --allow <path> to permit access to a specified directory and --enable-local-file-access to enable local-file reads more broadly. The manual describes --disable-local-file-access as the restriction control. Prefer allowing only the directory needed when that is practical, rather than granting broad access.

For example, if the HTML references files under /srv/site/assets, an invocation can include --allow /srv/site/assets before the input and output arguments. Adapt the path and command to your OS and invocation:
wkhtmltoimage --allow /srv/site/assets input.html output.png

Option names and defaults can depend on the installed version and wrapper. The project usage documentation describes local access and its default: wkhtmltopdf usage documentation. Debian’s man page documents the command options, including --allow and local-file access controls: wkhtmltoimage(1).
Do not assume that adding --enable-local-file-access alone resolves every local-file error. A Windows 10 report using wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6 found that the flag alone did not fix its case: upstream issue #5210. Check the actual path, binary version, option placement, and wrapper configuration as well.

For remote resources, test connectivity from the same runtime
If the failing resource is an http: or https: URL, test access from the same machine, container, service account, or job environment that runs wkhtmltoimage. A successful request from your laptop does not establish that the converter’s runtime can reach the host.
- Check that the runtime resolves the hostname and can reach the destination port.
- Review outbound firewall rules and any proxy required by that environment.
- Check TLS or certificate requirements and whether the URL redirects to a different host that is inaccessible.
- Verify the exact path and response URL, rather than relying on the site’s home page loading.
The command-line manual documents --proxy, --proxy-hostname-lookup, and repeatable --bypass-proxy-for options. Use the proxy settings that match your network; they do not repair an invalid URL or make an unreachable host available. See the man page and project usage documentation.

Choose load-error behavior without mistaking it for a fix
The documented --load-error-handling and --load-media-error-handling settings control what wkhtmltoimage does when a page or media resource fails to load. Their documented policies include abort, ignore, and skip. In general, abort stops on an error, while ignore or skip attempt to continue under different handling policies. Check the resulting image rather than assuming that a successful process produced a complete capture.
These options do not restore a missing file, correct a malformed URL, grant local-file permission, or fix network access. In issue #4408, reported ignore settings did not prevent exit code 1. For the command options, consult the wkhtmltoimage man page; the library’s loading and error settings are also described in the libwkhtmltox settings reference.
Retest one change at a time
- Re-run the same input and preserve its command and complete error output.
- Change one suspected cause: correct a path, add a narrowly scoped allow path, adjust the wrapper’s option mapping, or fix the relevant proxy/network configuration.
- Run the same input again and compare the failing resource, exit status, and output image.
- If the result changes, record the binary version and the setting that mattered so the fix can be applied consistently in the deployment environment.
