To clean install graphics drivers for streaming, first identify the exact GPU and Windows version, download the correct driver from the GPU maker or your PC maker, then use the vendor installer’s clean-install option. Use a separate cleanup utility only when a normal reinstall fails or driver corruption is suspected. Restart and verify the driver before testing your usual streaming workload; a clean install is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix for dropped frames or encoding lag.
Before you remove or install a driver
Identify the graphics adapter and Windows version
- Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters. Note the GPU model. A computer may show more than one adapter; identify which one handles the workload you intend to test. Microsoft explains how to find available adapters in its Microsoft Basic Display Adapter guide.
- Check your Windows version and download the matching driver for that GPU. Prefer the GPU manufacturer’s package, but check the laptop or branded-PC maker’s support page too: OEMs may customize drivers. Intel specifically advises checking with the computer manufacturer first for possible customizations in its clean-install guide.
- Download the installer before removing the existing driver, and save any work. Close streaming software, games, browsers, video players, GPU monitoring and tuning tools, and other graphics-accelerated apps. NVIDIA notes that open apps and Windows Update activity can interfere with its installation procedure.
A clean driver installation replaces display-driver software; it is not a clean installation of Windows. Windows reinstallation is a separate process that can remove files, apps, and settings, as Microsoft explains in its Windows reinstallation guide.
Choose the right clean-install method

Clean install an NVIDIA driver
- Download the matching NVIDIA Game Ready Driver for your GPU from NVIDIA’s driver download page.
- Close open applications, then run the downloaded installer as administrator. NVIDIA’s cited manual procedure addresses a failed NVIDIA App driver installation and notes that Windows Update may interfere.
- Choose Custom (Advanced), then select Perform a clean installation.
- Complete setup and restart the PC.
NVIDIA says Microsoft Defender can remain enabled in the cited procedure. Its separate advice about temporarily pausing aggressive third-party real-time scanning is specific to that procedure, not a general reason to disable security software. See NVIDIA’s manual clean-install instructions.
Clean install an Intel graphics driver
Use the installer option first
- Identify the Intel graphics product and download its matching package. On an OEM computer, check the PC maker’s driver page first.
- Run the Intel installer and select the clean-install checkbox if it is offered.
- Finish installation and restart if prompted.
Intel says its clean install removes old drivers, restores Intel settings to default, and clears the shader cache. The guide was last reviewed on 2026-09-09 and states a Windows 10 64-bit environment, so confirm the current package and its options for your system.

Manual removal if the checkbox is unavailable or ineffective
- Download the correct Intel package before starting.
- Disconnect from the internet to reduce the chance Windows installs a driver automatically during removal.
- Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters. Right-click the Intel graphics device and choose Uninstall device.
- If available, select Delete the driver software for this device, then proceed with uninstalling.
- Restart. Windows may temporarily show Microsoft Basic Display Adapter or Standard VGA Graphics Adapter.
- Install the package you downloaded and restart if prompted. Reconnect to the internet when installation is complete.
Intel warns that generic drivers may differ from OEM-customized packages. Follow Intel’s clean-install instructions for the exact current steps.
Clean install an AMD Radeon driver
Use Radeon Software’s Clean Install option when offered
- Download the correct Radeon Software package for your GPU and Windows version from AMD’s driver support page.
- Run the installer. If it detects an existing Radeon Software version and offers Clean Install on the Custom Install screen, select it to attempt removal of detected Radeon Software and AMD drivers before installing the selected components.
- Complete installation and restart if prompted.
AMD says this option can help with common corrupted-install problems, but it prevents Device Manager rollback to the previous driver. Confirm the labels and available components in your current installer; AMD’s Radeon installation guidance describes the option.

Use AMD Cleanup Utility for more thorough cleanup
- Download AMD Cleanup Utility from AMD.
- Save work and run the utility. AMD recommends Safe Mode for best results.
- Allow it to remove AMD graphics and audio driver software, then reboot as required for cleanup to take effect.
- Install the Radeon driver package you downloaded and restart if prompted.
AMD says the utility does not remove or modify AMD chipset drivers and creates a System Restore Point before cleanup. Display flicker or a brief blank screen during cleanup is described as normal. The utility supports Windows 7 and later according to AMD’s page, but verify current compatibility there.
Choose Radeon installation components if you need capture or streaming controls
AMD’s installation-types guidance describes Full installation as including gaming, recording, streaming, and performance-tuning features; Minimal and Driver Only omit some or all controls. Its examples are based on Radeon Software Adrenalin 21.4.1, so check the labels and feature descriptions in the current installer rather than assuming the old version’s options remain unchanged. Verify the installation and test streaming
- Restart if the installer or cleanup utility requests it.
- Open Device Manager → Display adapters and confirm the intended GPU appears, rather than only a generic adapter. Microsoft notes that the manufacturer driver generally offers better performance, video playback, resolution, multi-monitor support, and stability than Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.
- Reopen your streaming application and test the same content, game, output resolution and frame rate, encoder, and application settings you used before the driver change. Keeping these conditions consistent makes it easier to tell whether the driver change affected the symptom; this is a troubleshooting method, not a vendor-published streaming benchmark.
If the issue persists, establish whether it is actually a display-driver problem. For screen flicker, Microsoft’s guide suggests checking whether Task Manager flickers too and describes updating, rolling back, or uninstalling a display driver as options: Microsoft’s screen-flicker troubleshooting guide. The vendor instructions cited here do not establish that a clean driver install by itself improves streaming performance.
Common problems and what to do
- The installer does not offer a clean-install option: Check that you downloaded the package for the correct GPU and Windows version. Intel documents a manual removal route above. For AMD, use Cleanup Utility only when deeper cleanup is appropriate.
- Windows replaces the driver during removal: For Intel’s manual procedure, disconnect from the internet before uninstalling, then install the saved package before reconnecting.
- The PC shows a generic adapter after uninstall: This can happen temporarily while the vendor driver is absent. Install the downloaded package and restart, then verify the adapter again.
- NVIDIA setup fails or is interrupted: Close graphics-accelerated and monitoring/tuning apps, save work, and check whether Windows Update is running before retrying the cited NVIDIA manual procedure. Do not treat disabling security protection as a routine requirement.
- AMD cleanup causes flicker or a brief blank screen: AMD describes this as normal during cleanup. Let the utility finish and reboot as instructed.
- Streaming is still unstable after reinstall: A clean driver install does not prove the driver was the cause. Check the actual streaming symptom and settings, and consider the PC maker’s driver or a supported rollback route if the new driver introduced trouble. AMD’s Clean Install option specifically removes Device Manager’s rollback route.
