To compare screenshots of a website with dynamic text, first make the page state repeatable. If the changing text is irrelevant to the visual check, mask or hide only that text; if its words, formatting, or size matter, control the test data or verify the text separately. A screenshot diff is useful only when it can distinguish a real visual regression from an expected change.
Decide what the comparison must prove
Before writing a visual test, identify whether you need to catch changes to the page’s appearance, confirm the exact changing text, or do both. That decision determines whether masking is safe.
| Test situation | Recommended approach | What it can establish |
|---|---|---|
| A timestamp or other irrelevant value changes | Mask or hide just the volatile element. | Whether the rest of the captured page changed visually. |
| The text’s length, wrapping, or container size matters | Use controlled representative values, or test the layout of the relevant region without masking the whole component. | Whether the structure and geometry behave as expected; the result depends on the comparison method. |
| The exact text or value matters | Stabilize the test data or assert/snapshot the text separately. | Whether the expected content is present, independently of its pixel rendering. |
| Both the wording and its appearance matter | Use a deterministic value and retain a screenshot assertion, alongside a content check where useful. | Whether the content and its visual presentation meet their separate expectations. |
| A live feed, personalized result, or third-party area changes | Mock or seed it when feasible; otherwise isolate only the inherently volatile region. | Whether the owned interface remains stable without treating external changes as regressions. |
A mask hides pixels in the selected area; it does not prove the hidden value is correct. Broad masks can conceal layout shifts or real defects, so keep them as narrow as possible.
Make the captured state repeatable
Keep the route, viewport, browser setup, test data, and readiness conditions consistent. Prefer seeded or mocked data for values the application controls. Wait for the page to reach the state the test is meant to inspect rather than adding an arbitrary sleep.

Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to produce the same result before comparing the final capture with the expected image. Its documented options also disable CSS animations, CSS transitions, and Web Animations by default. These behaviors reduce some noise, but they do not make genuinely changing application data deterministic. Check the options against the Playwright version installed in your project; the visual-comparison documentation is on the /docs/next/ channel. Playwright PageAssertions API
Use Playwright to mask or hide changing text
For a changing value that is outside the visual test’s purpose, mask its locator in the screenshot assertion. For an element whose presence or layout should be altered only during capture, use a screenshot-only stylesheet. The following test assumes the project already has Playwright Test configured and that the page contains a timestamp with data-testid="timestamp".
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('page appearance is stable apart from the timestamp', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/report');
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Report' })).toBeVisible();
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('report.png', {
mask: [page.getByTestId('timestamp')],
});
});
Replace the example URL and locator with the page and volatile element in your application. A locator mask covers that element’s bounding box. If the text can expand into adjacent content, verify that the mask does not cover an area whose changes the test needs to catch.

To hide an element only in the screenshot, provide a capture stylesheet instead of a mask:

style: '[data-testid="timestamp"] { visibility: hidden !important; }',
});
Use hiding when the element should not appear in the captured image. Use a mask when you want to mark its screenshot area as intentionally variable. In either case, do not hide a value the test is supposed to validate.
Playwright also supports full-page and clipped captures, comparison tolerances such as a maximum number or ratio of different pixels, and a per-pixel color threshold. A component-level capture can reduce unrelated page noise when only that region matters. Set tolerances deliberately: they allow specified pixel differences, but they do not fix unstable state or determine whether a change is acceptable. Playwright visual comparisons

Keep text checks separate when content matters
If a dynamic value is functionally important, assert it or snapshot it rather than masking it away. Playwright supports non-image snapshots, including text snapshots; check the relevant API for your installed version. You can combine a deterministic fixture with a screenshot assertion when both exact content and styling matter. Playwright visual comparisons
For example, a test can assert the visible value and then compare the page image:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesawait expect(page.getByTestId('account-balance')).toHaveText('$125.00');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('account-summary.png');
The exact assertion should reflect the application’s intended behavior: if the value is expected to vary, arrange predictable test data rather than hard-coding a value that production logic cannot guarantee.

When layout matching or ignored regions help
Applitools describes ignored regions and layout matching as approaches for dynamic content. Layout matching focuses on page structure rather than exact content, which can help when changing values create noise. It cannot establish that the displayed data is correct, so pair it with a functional or content assertion when correctness matters. Applitools’ cited help article was updated in 2018 and its best-practices guide dates to 2020; verify current product labels and availability before relying on a specific workflow. Review baselines and troubleshoot noisy diffs
A screenshot changes on every run
- Check for uncontrolled timestamps, randomized data, personalized content, live feeds, and third-party widgets.
- Seed or mock values the test owns; wait for a meaningful readiness condition rather than increasing a fixed delay.
- Use a narrow mask only for content that the screenshot test does not need to inspect.
A mask hides a real visual defect
- Inspect the locator’s bounding box and shrink the selected region if it overlaps surrounding content.
- If text length or wrapping matters, avoid masking the full component; test with controlled short and long representative values.
- Keep a separate content assertion for any value whose correctness matters.
The diff reports harmless pixel changes
- Confirm the browser, viewport, fonts, data, and rendered state match the baseline environment.
- Disable motion where appropriate; Playwright screenshot assertions already disable CSS animations, transitions, and Web Animations by default.
- Adjust pixel thresholds only when the accepted visual tolerance is understood and documented.
A baseline changes after an expected UI update
Review the new image against the intended design or behavior before accepting it as the reference. Automatically accepting every changed image can turn a real regression into the new baseline.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I mask dynamic text in every screenshot test?
No. Mask it only when the changing content is outside the purpose of the visual check; otherwise control the value or test it directly.
Can a layout comparison confirm that changing text is correct?
No. It can assess structure independently of exact content, so pair it with a content or functional check when data correctness matters.
