To run Playwright screenshot tests on GitHub Actions, install your project dependencies, install Playwright’s browsers and Linux dependencies, then run npx playwright test. For reliable visual comparisons, create and compare baselines in the same operating system and browser environment, commit reviewed snapshots, and save the HTML report and traces so failures are diagnosable.
Set up the GitHub Actions workflow
This npm example checks out the repository, uses Node.js, installs dependencies from the lockfile, installs Playwright browsers and their Linux dependencies, and runs the test suite. It also uploads the HTML report after the job, including when the workflow is cancelled partway through.

retention-days: 30The action tags and report-retention setting match the example in Playwright’s Continuous Integration documentation; action releases and docs examples can change, so verify their current tags before adopting them. The essential order is stable: install the project’s locked dependencies, install the browser binaries and operating-system dependencies, then run the tests.
Keep package-manager commands aligned
The example assumes an npm project with a committed package-lock.json. Use the equivalent frozen or lockfile-enforcing install command for pnpm, Yarn, or another package manager, and ensure playwright.config.ts and the workflow invoke the project’s actual test setup. The report upload expects the HTML reporter to write to playwright-report/.

Write a visual screenshot assertion
Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion compares a rendered page with a stored reference image. A minimal test can look like this:

});On the first run, Playwright creates a reference snapshot if one does not exist. Treat that generated image as a proposed baseline: inspect it, then commit the snapshot with the test. Snapshot files are associated with the test file and should be version controlled. When a visual change is intentional, regenerate baselines with npx playwright test --update-snapshots, inspect the resulting diff, and commit only the reviewed changes. Choose what the assertion captures
Visual assertions can target a page or a specific locator. Playwright also supports screenshots saved to a file or returned as a buffer, full-page capture, and element screenshots; those capture APIs are useful for evidence or custom test logic, while toHaveScreenshot() is the built-in visual comparison approach. Adjust comparison thresholds only when the team understands what differences the tolerance will permit. A permissive threshold can conceal a genuine rendering regression.

Screenshot tests compare pixels, so a code change is not the only source of a diff. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with host operating system, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Fonts can also change text metrics and layout. Create reference images and run CI comparisons under matching conditions, including the operating system and Playwright browser version.
A direct GitHub-hosted runner is the simplest setup. For tighter control or cross-OS consistency, Playwright’s CI guide also describes running tests in a container. If you choose a container, use one aligned with the Playwright release installed by the project and the intended operating-system baseline; a mismatch between the package and browser image undermines reproducibility. Containers can make the environment more consistent, but require maintaining that alignment.

Playwright’s CI examples and action versions are live documentation rather than fixed compatibility promises. Check the current CI guide before pinning action or container tags.
Balance stability and execution time
Start with one worker
Playwright recommends setting CI workers to 1 to prioritize stability and reproducibility. Set this in playwright.config.ts:

If a single worker makes a large suite too slow, sharding distributes test files across multiple CI jobs. It can shorten wall-clock time, but adds workflow and result-management complexity. In particular, plan how reports from separate jobs will be handled before increasing the matrix size.

Be cautious about browser caching
Playwright generally does not recommend caching browser binaries in CI: restoring a cache can take about as long as downloading the browsers, and Linux system dependencies cannot be cached. If you decide caching is worthwhile in your setup, key it to the Playwright version so an upgrade does not reuse incompatible binaries. HTML report artifact
The workflow uploads the report directory as a GitHub artifact for inspection after a run. Confirm that your reporter configuration writes the report to the same path. The example retains the artifact for 30 days; this is a workflow setting, not a Playwright requirement.
GitHub failure annotations
Playwright’s built-in GitHub reporter can surface failure annotations in GitHub Actions. In matrix workflows, annotations from multiple jobs can multiply and make the changed-file view harder to read. See the reporter documentation before enabling it across a large matrix.

Traces for diagnosis
Configure tracing on retries in CI rather than recording every test by default; Playwright’s best-practices guide warns that tracing every test is performance-heavy. When a test fails, the trace viewer can show action history, logs, DOM snapshots, network details, and screenshots. See Trace Viewer and Playwright’s best practices.
Troubleshoot common CI failures
- Browser executable missing: ensure
npx playwright install --with-depsruns after the project dependencies are installed. After upgrading Playwright, install browsers again because browser binaries are tied to the Playwright version. See browser installation guidance. - Linux launch or shared-library errors: use the Linux dependency installation step, or check that the chosen container includes the dependencies required by its browser build.
- Screenshot differs only in CI: compare the baseline and CI operating system, browser version, fonts, headless mode, and relevant rendering settings. Regenerate references only if the changed output is intentional and reviewed.
- Report artifact is missing or empty: check that the HTML reporter is enabled and its output directory matches the artifact’s
path. - Tests are flaky under parallel load: begin with one worker in CI. If more speed is necessary, consider sharding rather than simply increasing concurrency, then check whether the added parallelism affects the suite’s stability.
- Many pull-request annotations obscure results: review whether a matrix is emitting annotations from every job; use the HTML report and traces as complementary evidence.
