The stream must first be encoded and prepared for HTTP playback. AWS’s documented workflow pairs CloudFront with services such as MediaLive and MediaPackage, or uses MediaStore as an origin when the stream is already in the needed formats. Cloudflare Stream Live is a different kind of option: a managed video service that includes ingest, encoding, recording, and playback delivery. Choose by comparing the complete workflow and testing it with your audience—not by treating either vendor’s feature claims or network footprint as a neutral performance ranking.
What CloudFront does in a live-streaming workflow
A live-video CDN distributes prepared media to viewers; it does not, by itself, ingest a camera feed, encode it, or package it for playback. Encoders typically produce media segments and manifest files in formats such as HLS, MPEG-DASH, Smooth Streaming, or CMAF. CloudFront can serve that content from an HTTP origin. AWS describes workflows that pair it with MediaLive for real-time encoding and MediaPackage for packaging, or with MediaStore as an origin when the encoder already produces the formats the target devices need.
MediaPackage is the packaging option when the workflow needs formats for different devices and may need features such as DRM. MediaStore is an origin option when the encoded stream is already in the formats required by the audience’s devices. CloudFront then distributes the resulting stream. See the AWS CloudFront live-streaming guide and AWS streaming documentation.
What AWS says CloudFront can handle
AWS says CloudFront supports workloads in which millions of viewers request the same manifests or segments. AWS also says a configuration can deliver sub-three-second camera-to-screen latency and sub-one-second synchronization. Treat those as AWS capability statements, not independent benchmarks or guarantees: actual results depend on the encoder, origin, player, audience locations, and configuration. AWS describes media-fragment caching and edge request collapsing as ways to reduce origin load. Its media page lists 700+ Points of Presence, a vendor network-footprint figure that does not establish lower latency for a particular audience. See AWS CloudFront for Media.

How Cloudflare Stream Live differs
Cloudflare Stream Live is an integrated managed video service, not just a CDN. Its documented workflow creates a live input and stream key; a contributor sends video over RTMPS or SRT; Cloudflare encodes multiple resolutions and provides playback through its player or HLS- or DASH-compatible players. Recordings become available after a broadcast ends. This broader scope can reduce the number of separate components an operator has to assemble, while also making the comparison different from CDN-only delivery. See Cloudflare Stream Live documentation.
Where the services differ
| Decision point | CloudFront with AWS media services | Cloudflare Stream Live |
|---|---|---|
| Primary scope | CDN delivery for prepared media; AWS documents workflows using separate encoding and origin or packaging services. | Managed live-video workflow covering contribution ingest, encoding, recording, and playback delivery, according to Cloudflare’s documentation. |
| Contribution and encoding | MediaLive is part of AWS’s documented workflow for real-time encoding; CloudFront itself is the delivery layer. | Contributors send RTMPS or SRT to a live input; Cloudflare encodes multiple resolutions. |
| Packaging and playback | MediaPackage can package for device formats; MediaStore can act as an origin when the stream is already in the needed formats. CloudFront distributes the result. | Playback is available through Cloudflare’s player or HLS/DASH-compatible players; recordings are available after the broadcast ends. |
| Low-latency options | AWS describes sub-three-second camera-to-screen latency and sub-one-second synchronization as achievable in a configuration, not guaranteed results. LL-HLS requires correct request forwarding, described below. | Cloudflare documents WebRTC delivery for sub-second scenarios. Its documentation says billing for WebRTC delivery begins October 15, 2026; confirm availability and billing status before relying on it. |
| Published delivery price | Not stated in the AWS sources cited here; estimate the full AWS workload for your setup. | $1 per 1,000 video minutes delivered, on the pricing page last updated September 8, 2026. Storage capacity is priced in $5 monthly increments per 1,000 stored minutes. These are Cloudflare’s listed rates; check the pricing page for current terms. |
Cloudflare counts delivery by HTTP requests for video segments or MP4 parts; preloading and buffering can count as delivery. Its listed rates cannot be compared directly with a CloudFront estimate unless the audience, watch duration, regions, storage, origins, encoding, and required services are matched. Pricing and service scope can change.

How to choose a live-streaming delivery option
Start with the outcome and full workload rather than a vendor’s headline feature. The right system for a one-region event with a managed player may differ from one serving a global audience through an existing media pipeline.
- Map the workflow. List contribution ingest, real-time encoding, packaging, recording, origin storage, CDN delivery, playback, and monitoring. Mark which pieces your team already operates and which the candidate service includes. Count every component needed to reach production.
- Set a latency target and test the playback path. Define the target glass-to-glass latency, the required synchronization, protocols, and player compatibility. Test the encoder, origin, manifests, segments, and actual player together; a CDN’s capability statement does not determine end-to-end latency.
- Test from the audience’s real regions. Measure startup time, rebuffering, throughput, and failure rates where viewers are located. An advertised edge count is not a substitute for these audience-specific results.
- Exercise scale and origin behavior. Test an event spike, manifest and segment cache behavior, origin request load, and failover. CloudFront’s live-streaming guide notes a special LL-HLS requirement: forward the
_HLS_msnand_HLS_partquery parameters in the cache policy for manifest requests to support MediaPackage’s blocking playlist-request feature. - Check security and rights across the pipeline. Determine how the system will handle signed access, geographic restrictions, origin authorization, encryption, and any DRM requirement. Confirm that controls cover ingest, packaging, origin, and delivery as applicable.
- Build a matched cost and operations estimate. Include delivery, requests, storage, encoding, packaging, origin, logs, support, failover, and engineering time. Use the same audience size, viewing duration, regions, quality ladder, retention, and availability assumptions for each option. Recheck current pricing before committing.
CloudFront live-streaming cost: what to count
A CloudFront delivery estimate alone does not represent the cost of an AWS live workflow. Include the services needed to encode, package or store the stream, serve the origin, deliver to viewers, and operate and observe the system. The combination depends on whether the stream needs MediaLive encoding, MediaPackage packaging, or a MediaStore origin, as well as the event’s audience and delivery pattern. The AWS sources cited here do not provide a normalized cost for a particular workload, so a meaningful estimate requires your own workload assumptions and current AWS pricing.

StreamNeo is not a general-purpose CDN or a replacement for the CloudFront or Cloudflare contribution and delivery architectures above. It is for a narrower job: keeping an uploaded video or playlist live on a YouTube channel continuously. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It does not go live from a camera.

Which option should you choose?
Choose CloudFront when your team needs CDN delivery for a prepared live stream and wants to assemble or already operates the surrounding AWS media workflow. Choose Cloudflare Stream Live when its managed ingest-through-playback scope suits the job and its player, protocols, recording, and billing model fit your requirements. Neither the AWS capability statements nor the available Cloudflare documentation establishes that one option is universally fastest or cheapest. Make the decision with a workload-matched cost model and tests using your stream, player, and viewers’ actual regions.
