First identify which frames are dropping: frames lost while sending to YouTube usually point to an upload or connection problem; choppy encoder output, rising CPU/GPU load, or encoding warnings point to local processing overload. Check both before changing settings. When you are transcoding several videos at once, every encode competes for finite computer resources, and every live output adds to your upload demand.
Identify the bottleneck before changing anything
“Dropped frames” can describe different failures. OBS distinguishes connection-related dropped frames from local rendering or encoding performance trouble. YouTube likewise recommends checking encoder output, CPU load, the local archive, and the outbound internet connection. Start by noting which OBS statistic or warning increases and whether the YouTube Live Control Room reports stream-health problems.
- Likely network problem: the encoder preview and local recording look smooth, but frames are lost while sending to YouTube. Check sustained upload capacity, connection stability, and the route to the ingest server. OBS defines connection-related dropped frames as occurring when the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate (OBS connection troubleshooting, page dated 2024-09-30).
- Likely local processing problem: the preview or local recording is already choppy, encoder warnings appear, or CPU/GPU load rises as encoding jobs run. Reduce processing work or adjust the encoder and output settings.
- Possibly more than one problem: a computer under load can produce poor local output while a busy or unstable connection also loses frames. Check each symptom rather than assuming one fix will address both.
Record the OBS statistics and relevant log messages, YouTube stream health, preview or archive quality, CPU/GPU load, and upload performance while the issue occurs. YouTube’s troubleshooting guide recommends updating the encoder, checking its output and CPU load, inspecting the local archive, and testing outbound internet (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream).
Reduce local encoding and rendering load
Stop competing jobs and applications
Pause or finish unnecessary video transcodes and close GPU-intensive applications before going live. If you are gaming, rendering complex scenes, or running other heavy GPU work on the same machine, those tasks may compete with video encoding and OBS’s scene rendering. If the computer cannot sustain all of them, reduce the workload rather than expecting a single setting to remove the bottleneck.

Use hardware encoding when it fits your system
A supported hardware encoder can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component on the GPU and may reduce the performance impact. Check that your GPU and driver support the encoder you select. Hardware encoding is not a universal cure: image quality at a given bitrate varies by encoder generation, and OBS still needs GPU resources to render and composite scenes. If GPU use is already saturated, reduce other GPU work and rendering load as well.
OBS discusses these trade-offs and supported technologies in its hardware encoding guide (page dated 2022-01-11) and encoding performance troubleshooting guide (page dated 2021-06-12). Compare software and hardware encoding on CPU relief, image quality at your target bitrate, encoder and driver compatibility, and remaining GPU capacity for scene rendering.

Lower output demands if the machine remains overloaded
Reduce one or more output resolutions or frame rates, simplify scenes, and avoid running uncapped games or multiple intensive jobs alongside several transcodes. Change one factor at a time and test again under a representative workload. A lower output setting may ease local processing, but it does not automatically fix an unstable upload path.
Check upload capacity for every outgoing stream
Measure upload performance while the network is being used in conditions similar to the live stream. Compare the available outbound bandwidth with the combined bitrate of all simultaneous outputs. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and says to account for both primary and backup stream bitrates (YouTube Help: Streaming tips).

- List the bitrate for each outgoing stream, including any backup stream.
- Add those bitrates together, then check whether the connection can sustain that total with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- If capacity is insufficient or varies during the stream, reduce the outgoing bitrate or lower resolution or frame rate, then test again.
- Check whether other people or applications are using the same connection. If the computer relies on unstable Wi-Fi, a wired Ethernet connection to the router is worth trying; it will not solve encoder overload or guarantee a fix for an ISP, router, or ingest-route problem.
Do not buy new hardware until the measurements point to a local processing bottleneck. If the local output is clean but sending fails, focus first on bandwidth and connection stability.
Match YouTube encoder settings to the output
YouTube’s documented live workflow lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not over four seconds. Select a bitrate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually use. These are YouTube Help recommendations, not a measurement of your connection’s capacity; the page does not state a publication year.

| Output format | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps, H.264 | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps, AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 12 Mbps |

| 720p at 60 fps, H.264 | 8 Mbps |
These example bitrates come from YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance. Do not apply one row to a different codec or output format, or raise a bitrate beyond what your upload can sustain. YouTube recommends testing with similar movement and audio and monitoring stream health and messages during the event.

- Use the intended encoder, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and scene setup.
- Run the same number of simultaneous transcodes and other demanding applications you expect to use during the live stream.
- Include representative movement and audio, then compare the encoder preview and local archive with OBS statistics and YouTube stream health.
- If the local output is poor, reduce local workload or output demands. If local output is clean but sending drops frames, revisit upload headroom and connection stability.

Common symptoms and fixes
| What you observe | Likely area to investigate | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Preview or local recording is choppy; encoder warnings or high CPU load appear | Local encoding or rendering performance | Pause other transcodes, close intensive applications, simplify scenes, reduce output demands, or test a supported hardware encoder. |
| Preview and local recording look smooth, but OBS reports connection-related dropped frames | Upload capacity or connection path to YouTube | Compare combined stream bitrates with sustained upload, leave the recommended headroom, and reduce output bitrate if needed. |
| Drops occur only when other devices or applications are active | Shared or variable upload capacity | Limit competing traffic during the stream and test again under the same conditions. |
| GPU use is high even after switching to hardware encoding | GPU contention or scene rendering | Reduce other GPU workloads and simplify rendering; hardware encoding does not remove all GPU work. |
| A wired connection does not resolve sending drops | Possible ISP, router, upload-capacity, or ingest-route issue | Recheck sustained upload and bitrate headroom; Ethernet only addresses a possible unstable Wi-Fi link. |
