To protect a video stream with encryption, encrypt its media samples during packaging, deliver the resulting media with protection metadata, and connect a compatible player to the right key or license service. Encryption is only one part of the system: DRM policy, browser support, packaging, application authorization, and device compatibility all matter.
What video encryption does—and what it does not do
Video encryption transforms media samples so they cannot be played as ordinary unprotected media. During playback, a compatible client obtains the needed key through the authorized playback flow and decrypts the samples. A packager can also add DRM headers or manifest metadata that help the client locate the relevant protection information. Microsoft describes this protected-packaging flow in its PlayReady content packaging documentation.
Encryption is not the same as DRM. Encryption protects the media samples; a DRM system adds mechanisms for handling keys or licenses and applying playback policy. Nor does encryption guarantee that a viewer cannot capture or redistribute what they can see. The cited standards and vendor documentation describe protected playback mechanisms but do not quantify residual capture risk.
How a protected stream is delivered
- Set the policy and keys. Decide what access controls playback needs and create the content key or keys. Define how the application will authenticate and authorize viewers.
- Package and encrypt the media. A packager or encoder encrypts the relevant samples and writes protection metadata into the media or manifest. The packager may be integrated with the encoder. Microsoft notes that PlayReady deliverables do not include a packager; publishers may use open-source encryptors or professional encoding providers.
- Deliver the manifest and segments. Send the selected adaptive-streaming format and its media segments to viewers. The player may change encoded representations as bandwidth and client capabilities change, so protection metadata and key IDs must match the media being played.
- Request a license or key. The application and player discover an applicable key system and follow its license or key flow. In Google’s Widevine Cloud License Service model, the client request passes through a license proxy, which applies business rules before requesting license fulfillment.
- Decrypt and play. A compatible player uses the authorized key path to decrypt the samples. The result depends on the implementation, client support, credentials, and policy—not simply on whether the file is encrypted.
Encryption, DRM, EME, and packaging are different layers
| Component | Role | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Media encryption | Encrypts media samples and associates them with protection metadata and key identifiers. | Container and encryption-scheme support across target devices and players. |
| DRM system | Provides a system-specific protected playback and license/key mechanism, with associated policy. | Device coverage, credentials, license service, and policy requirements. |
| EME | Browser API for applications to discover and interact with key systems and encrypted media. | Browser support, available key systems, supported schemes, and application authorization. |
| Packager or encryptor | Encrypts samples and writes the protection metadata needed by the delivery workflow. | Output format, key IDs, DRM headers, manifest correctness, and compatibility with the encoder and player. |
| License or key service | Handles authorized key or license requests, often applying business rules. | Service integration, credentials, request security, and operational policy. |
| Player and application | Choose a compatible playback path, authenticate or authorize the viewer, request the license, and play the media. | Exact browser, operating system, device, player version, and supported key system. |
The W3C is explicit about EME’s scope: “This specification does not define a content protection or Digital Rights Management system.” EME is the browser-facing API, not a DRM system. It also leaves application authentication and authorization to the page or application. See the W3C Encrypted Media Extensions specification; its page identifies a July 7, 2026 Working Draft and notes that the latest Recommendation is the 2017 publication, so those statuses should not be conflated.

How the main protection options differ
| Option or standard | What it is | Implementation considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Widevine | Google content protection system, used with browser APIs and supported packaging standards. | Check target platforms and scheme support, package/player compatibility, and license-service integration. Google says Widevine licensees receive organization-specific test and production credentials, and device license requests must be processed by a license proxy. Details may change; Google’s overview was last updated October 9, 2024. Google Widevine overview. |
| PlayReady | Microsoft content protection system supporting Common Encryption workflows. | Version affects encryption modes: Microsoft’s documentation says PlayReady 1.x–3.x supports cenc CTR, while 4.0 and later supports cenc and cbcs; cens and cbc1 are not supported in the described system. Check the version and workflow in scope. Microsoft PlayReady Content Encryption. |
| FairPlay Streaming | Apple protection for HLS delivery and playback on Apple platforms. | Check HLS authoring, Apple client support, key-server implementation, production credential eligibility, and cbcs requirements. Apple says production credentials require approval; its stated path is for a content owner or licensee whose team provides a consumer streaming service. Apple FairPlay Streaming. |
| Common Encryption (CENC) | A standardized encryption format and signaling approach referenced by vendor DRM systems; it can reduce duplicate packaging in compatible workflows. | It does not make every DRM system or device compatible. Confirm container and scheme support, key and key-ID design, and each DRM’s applicable license path. Microsoft describes use of the same content keys across DRM headers for an asset in its workflow. Microsoft Content Packaging and Delivery. |
Apple’s archived FairPlay Streaming debugging note TN2454 says Apple devices support cbcs for fMP4 sample encryption and recommends rotating content keys at HLS segment granularity. Treat this as Apple-specific implementation guidance and verify it against current deployment documentation.
Decisions to make before implementation
Define the playback scope
List the specific browsers, operating systems, device models, and player versions you need to support. Map each to its available key system, container, and encryption scheme. “Supports DRM” is not a useful compatibility test without these details.

Choose the delivery and packaging workflow
Select the streaming format and packager or encoder, then verify that its output includes the required media encryption, key IDs, headers, and manifest signaling. Determine whether packaging is integrated with encoding or handled as a separate step. Validate the output in the actual player implementations you plan to ship.
Design key and license handling
Specify how content keys are created, stored, rotated if required, and associated with assets. Keep the license or key service distinct from the packager. For Widevine Cloud License Service, include the license proxy in the request path and account for the business rules it applies. Confirm how credentials differ between test and production.

Set application access policy
Decide how the application identifies and authorizes a viewer before it allows a license request. EME does not define this application-level authentication or authorization. Protect the request path and make the policy explicit rather than assuming that encryption or a DRM header handles viewer identity by itself.
Validate edge cases and service requirements
- Test every target device and player version with the precise container and encryption mode you will deliver.
- Confirm that adaptive representations, protection metadata, and key IDs remain aligned as playback switches between renditions.
- Check offline playback, expiration, key rotation, and entitlement behavior if your product requires them; these depend on the chosen system and service policy.
- For FairPlay production use, verify credential eligibility and the current approval process with Apple.
- For PlayReady, confirm version-specific scheme support and packaging responsibilities rather than assuming the DRM package includes an encryptor.
Common implementation failures and what to check
| Symptom | Likely area | Checks |
|---|---|---|
| Playback fails before a license is requested | Manifest, media metadata, or client capability | Confirm the manifest advertises protection correctly, the player recognizes the key system, and the device supports the selected format and scheme. |
| License request is rejected | Application authorization, proxy, credentials, or policy | Check viewer entitlement, request routing through the expected proxy, credential environment (test versus production), and service-side business rules. |
| License succeeds but media will not decrypt | Key ID, content key, or packaging mismatch | Verify that the key ID in the media and manifest corresponds to the key returned by the service, and that the selected rendition uses the expected key. |
| One platform plays while another fails | Different platform, scheme, or version support | Compare exact browser/device versions, DRM system, container, and encryption mode; test the relevant client matrix rather than generalizing from one working device. |
| Playback breaks after a rendition switch | Inconsistent protection signaling across representations | Check that all adaptive representations have compatible protection metadata and the correct key identifiers. |
| Production fails although test playback worked | Credentials or deployment configuration | Confirm production credentials, service endpoints, approved FairPlay access where applicable, and that packaging and license policy match the production asset. |
How encryption fits a YouTube 24/7 stream
Video encryption and DRM describe protected on-demand or adaptive playback workflows; they are not instructions for keeping a YouTube live stream running. If your goal is instead to loop uploaded videos as a continuous YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for that task, not a DRM or encryption solution. You upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; its cloud loop continues without a computer or home connection staying on. Learn about StreamNeo.
