Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo get started with Streamlabs Desktop, install it from Streamlabs, complete first-run setup, create a scene, add the sources you need, check audio and video settings, then test before streaming or recording. The steps below cover Windows and macOS, including the choices that most affect what viewers see and hear.
1. Check compatibility and install Streamlabs Desktop
Streamlabs’ setup pages do not agree on minimum operating-system versions. Its newer quick-start guide, dated May 20, 2026, lists Windows 11 or macOS 12 as minimums, with Windows 11 or macOS 13 or later recommended. A separate system-requirements article, dated April 25, 2025, lists Windows 10 or macOS 12+ as minimums and recommends Windows 10 or macOS 10.15+. Because those published recommendations conflict, check the current Streamlabs support page and installer for your computer before installing rather than assuming an older macOS or Windows version is supported. Streamlabs quick-start guide; Streamlabs system requirements.
The May 2026 quick-start lists 8 GB RAM and 10 GB storage as minimums; it recommends 16 GB or more RAM and a 512 GB SSD or larger. Its recommended processor examples are an Intel Core i5 11th or 12th generation, or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X and higher. It lists integrated graphics as a minimum and Nvidia RTX 20/30 series or AMD RX 5000/6000 series as recommendations. These are Streamlabs’ published guidelines, not a guarantee that every game, scene, or output setting will run well.
- Open Streamlabs’ official download page and download the installer for your computer. The quick-start says the site supplies the version for the computer; the installer adds missing background files, such as Windows Redistributables.
- Run the installer and follow its prompts. If your OS is older than the current supported version shown by Streamlabs, resolve that before troubleshooting installation problems.
- Launch Streamlabs Desktop when installation finishes.
2. Complete first-run setup
On first launch, allow camera and microphone access if you intend to use those devices. Choose whether you plan to stream live or record, then sign in with a Streamlabs ID or a supported streaming account. Users moving from OBS Studio can import existing settings; if you are starting from scratch, choose Start Fresh. The onboarding screens also let you select camera and microphone devices and choose an overlay or skip it. Streamlabs’ guides describe free and Ultra choices during onboarding; check the current in-app plan details because labels and entitlements can change. Streamlabs getting-started guide.

If the app asks for intended use or experience level, choose the options that reflect what you want to do. They guide setup, but do not replace checking the scene and device configuration yourself.
3. Build a scene and add sources
A scene is a layout; sources are the content and elements placed in it. Start with one scene for the stream or recording you are preparing, and give it a recognizable name so it is easy to select later.

- In the Sources panel, add the capture source that matches what you want viewers to see: Display Capture for the whole desktop, Window Capture for one app, or Game Capture for a full-screen game. Streamlabs’ July 2026 guide recommends the unified Screen Capture source where available. The exact source choices can depend on the app version and system.
- To include a webcam, add a Video Capture Device and select the camera. Resize and position it in the preview.
- Add optional elements such as Alert Box or Chat Box only if you want them on screen; configure and test each widget before going live.
Source order controls which item appears in front. If the webcam should overlay gameplay, move the webcam source above the game source in the list. Before using Display Capture, close private windows and notifications you do not want shown to viewers.
4. Configure and test audio
Speak or play audio while watching the meters in the Audio Mixer. A moving meter confirms that Streamlabs is receiving a signal; it does not by itself confirm that the sound level is balanced or that viewers will hear every source.

- On Windows, set Desktop Audio to the default playback device selected in Windows Sound Settings if you want computer audio included.
- On macOS, Streamlabs’ quick-start says desktop audio capture requires audio-routing software configured as a Mic/Aux source. It gives the free software BlackHole as an example; follow the current setup instructions for the routing software you choose. Streamlabs macOS desktop-audio guide.
- Check the microphone and desktop-audio meters separately. If a source is not wanted, mute or disable it rather than leaving an unintended sound on the broadcast.
A built-in microphone or existing headset may be enough to begin. A separate USB microphone is optional, not a requirement for using Streamlabs Desktop.
5. Choose video and output settings
Open Settings > Video. Set Base (Canvas) Resolution to the resolution of the monitor or canvas you are designing for. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to the resolution viewers should receive; it can match the base or be lower. Lower output resolution reduces the detail sent to viewers and can make streaming easier for a constrained computer or connection.

Choose a frame rate that suits the content and system. Streamlabs’ May 2026 guide gives 30 FPS for slow card games and 60 FPS for fast action as examples, not as a universal preset. Higher resolution and frame rate require more bitrate and can increase hardware load.
In output settings, choose an encoder your computer supports. Streamlabs distinguishes CPU-based software encoding (x264) from GPU hardware encoding (NVENC) and recommends NVENC New for Nvidia graphics cards. Available encoder names depend on hardware and software version; a setting that exceeds the computer’s capacity may cause performance problems. For the stream bitrate, use the current recommendations of the platform you are streaming to and test your actual setup. Streamlabs’ 2025 system-requirements article gives 3.6 Mbps or better for 720p at 30 FPS for most platforms as a general guideline, not a guarantee for every platform, game, or scene.

- Test alerts and other widgets so you know they display as expected.
- Confirm output resolution, frame rate, encoder, and platform-specific stream settings.
Start a live stream
- Click Go Live.
- Select the platform, enter the requested stream metadata, and review the details.
- Confirm the broadcast only when the preview and audio are ready.
Make a local recording
- Open Settings > Output and choose the save location and recording options available in your version.
- Click Record to begin, then click it again to stop.

7. Fix common setup problems
Installation or features fail on Windows
Streamlabs’ July 9, 2026 troubleshooting article advises installing both the 32-bit and 64-bit Microsoft Visual C++ 2017 redistributables and rebooting, even on a 64-bit Windows system. It also recommends updating graphics drivers and the operating system, checking firewall permissions, and allowing the app through antivirus protection where applicable. Treat these as troubleshooting measures for a problem, not mandatory first-run steps. Streamlabs troubleshooting guide.
The preview is blank or shows the wrong thing
- Confirm the intended source is present and visible in the selected scene.
- For a game or app, try the capture type that fits it: Game Capture for full-screen games, Window Capture for one app, or Display Capture for the full desktop. Use Screen Capture where available if Streamlabs offers it as a unified option.
- Check source order and position; a source beneath an opaque layer may be hidden.
- Close and reopen the captured game or app after changing capture sources, then inspect the preview again.
A microphone or desktop audio meter does not move
- Re-select the microphone under Mic/Auxiliary Device and check that the operating system has granted microphone access.
- On Windows, check that Desktop Audio points to the playback device actually in use.
- On macOS, verify that desktop-audio routing software is installed and configured as an input source; a microphone selection alone does not capture system audio.
The stream stutters or the computer struggles
Reduce one demanding setting at a time: lower output resolution or frame rate, then test again. Check that the encoder matches your hardware and that the platform’s current bitrate guidance is followed. Streamlabs notes that settings beyond the computer’s capacity can cause performance problems; no single configuration is best for every machine or type of content.
A fresh scene collection has incorrect resolution, or you need a full reset
For a new scene collection, Streamlabs’ troubleshooting article says to check Settings > Video and set Base (Canvas) Resolution to the monitor’s native resolution, then choose the desired Output (Scaled) Resolution. Its Clear Cache and Restart option wipes user data, so use it only when you intend to reset rather than as routine onboarding.
