RTMPS is RTMP carried over a TLS-encrypted connection; plain RTMP does not add that TLS layer. RTMPS protects the connection from your encoder to the streaming service’s ingest endpoint, but that alone does not mean the stream stays encrypted inside the service or all the way to viewers.
RTMP and RTMPS, in plain language
RTMP is a protocol used to send a live stream from an encoder to a service’s ingest endpoint. RTMPS uses RTMP over TLS, which encrypts that connection in transit. The “S” indicates the added secure transport layer; it does not describe a different video format or promise better picture quality.
Plain RTMP lacks this TLS protection. A platform may allow it, or may reject it if insecure ingest is disabled. The destination—not the protocol name alone—determines which connection schemes and settings it accepts. Amazon IVS, for example, defaults its real-time ingest setting insecureIngest to false. What RTMPS encrypts—and what it does not
RTMPS encrypts data on the connection between the encoder and the ingest endpoint. That is encryption in transit to the service. It is not, by itself, proof of end-to-end encryption through the service’s internal processing or onward delivery.

AWS says Amazon IVS encrypts data in transit for RTMPS ingest, but also documents that a stream may travel unencrypted within IVS for processing. The encryption boundary therefore matters: RTMPS protects the encoder-to-ingest leg, while the destination’s architecture and policies govern what happens afterward. What port does RTMPS use?
There is no single port that every RTMPS service must use. The receiver configures the endpoint and port. For Amazon IVS low-latency streaming, AWS documents RTMPS over TCP port 443 and insecure RTMP over TCP port 1935. Its RTMPS URL example is shaped like rtmps://<IVS-ingest-server>/<IVS-stream-key>; the corresponding RTMP example uses rtmp://. How to configure RTMPS in OBS
In OBS, select the RTMPS server URL and stream key supplied by your destination. The labels and workflow can vary with OBS versions and service integrations, so use the destination’s current encoder instructions for the exact fields. AWS lists OBS among the software encoders that can be used when configured to support its ingest protocol; this does not guarantee compatibility for every encoder version or configuration. - Get the ingest details from your streaming service. Copy its RTMPS server URL and stream key. Treat the key as a credential and do not share or publish it.
- Enter the destination in OBS. Open OBS’s stream settings, select the service’s applicable configuration, and enter the RTMPS server URL and stream key. If the service provides a dedicated RTMPS option or instructions, follow those rather than changing only the URL by guesswork.
- Check the service’s technical requirements. Confirm the required TLS version, endpoint, port, and any account or stream setup requirements with the destination.
- Test the connection. Start a test stream if the destination offers one, and verify that it receives the feed. If OBS cannot connect, work through the checks below before switching to plain RTMP.
Why an RTMPS connection may fail
- Wrong URL scheme or endpoint: Confirm that the server URL is the destination’s RTMPS endpoint, not its RTMP endpoint, and that it is entered exactly as supplied.
- Wrong port or blocked network traffic: Check the receiver’s required port and whether your network or firewall permits outbound traffic to it. Do not assume port 443 or 1935 applies to a service other than the one whose documentation specifies it.
- TLS version mismatch: The encoder must be able to negotiate the TLS version required by the destination. AWS says IVS RTMPS requires TLS 1.2 or later. If an encoder is outdated or its RTMPS implementation is incompatible, update it or consult the vendor’s compatibility guidance. AWS IVS Streaming Configuration
- RTMP is disabled at the destination: A platform that disables insecure ingest may reject plain RTMP. Use its supported RTMPS endpoint instead of trying to bypass that policy.
- Incorrect or outdated stream key: Re-copy the key from the destination’s current stream setup. If it may have been exposed, rotate it through the service’s controls.
- Encoder does not support the required protocol: Check the specific software or hardware encoder’s RTMPS and TLS support. AWS identifies OBS and other compatible encoders as options, but compatibility depends on the encoder and configuration. AWS IVS setup guidance
Which should you choose?
Use RTMPS when the destination supports it; it adds encryption in transit between the encoder and ingest endpoint. Use plain RTMP only if the destination explicitly requires or permits it for a verified reason, and understand that this connection does not have the RTMPS TLS layer. When deciding, verify the destination’s accepted scheme, endpoint, port, TLS requirements, and encoder compatibility. Neither choice alone tells you how the service encrypts or handles data after ingest.
