A dependable church livestream needs four things: a camera, a clean audio feed, an encoder such as OBS, and a destination such as YouTube. Start with the equipment your church already has, connect and test the video and sound paths, then rehearse the full service before going live. Copyright permissions for worship music are a separate requirement from the technical setup.
What you need for a church livestream
Plan around four functional parts. The exact hardware depends on your room and existing equipment; a capture card or audio interface is useful only if your signal path requires it.
- Camera: A camera with an output that can connect to your streaming computer, directly or through compatible capture hardware.
- Audio feed: A suitable output from the church sound mixer for the online program. The congregation’s room sound is not necessarily the right mix for viewers.
- Encoder: A computer running streaming software such as OBS, or another encoder appropriate to your equipment and team.
- Streaming destination: The account and platform where viewers will watch, configured in the encoder with the correct destination or stream key.
Before buying anything, identify the camera’s video outputs, available mixer outputs for a stream mix, the computer or encoder, the intended platform, and the internet connection’s upload capacity. Add extra cameras, switching, or graphics only when they solve a real need and the team can operate them consistently.
How to connect the camera and church sound
Video: camera to computer
- Check the camera’s available video output and the computer’s available inputs. In the common computer-based arrangement described by ChurchSetup, the camera connects to the computer through a compatible capture card.
- Power the camera and connect it to the capture hardware using the supported connector and format for those specific devices.
- In OBS, add the capture device as a video source and confirm that the image appears with the framing you intend to use.
This is one practical arrangement, not a universal requirement. Some equipment can connect differently; confirm compatibility before purchasing a capture card.

Audio: mixer to streaming computer
- Ask the sound operator for a dedicated or otherwise suitable mixer output for the stream. A stream mix may need different levels from the mix sent to speakers in the room.
- Connect the mixer output to the streaming computer through the audio interface or other compatible input required by the equipment. The documented workflow uses XLR or quarter-inch connections, depending on the mixer and interface.
- Select the correct audio input in OBS, then listen to a test from the viewer’s side. Check that speech and music are both present and at clean, usable levels.
Do not assume a mixer output, cable, or interface is interchangeable with another: check the actual connectors, signal type, and device inputs. After a test, correct any audio-video synchronization issue in the encoder or signal path.
Configure the encoder and YouTube stream
- Set up the scene in OBS. Add the camera and intended audio source, then compose the scene or scenes needed for the service. Keep the setup simple enough for the volunteer operating it.
- Choose the destination. Configure the streaming account and destination in the encoder. If you use a stream key, treat it like a password: keep it private and do not show it on screen or share it publicly.
- Choose video settings your connection can sustain. Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate based on the encoder, platform guidance, and actual upload connection. YouTube does not provide a single speed threshold that is right for every setup in the guidance cited here; test your connection and encoder rather than relying on a generic number.
- Test under realistic conditions. YouTube Help advises: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Test representative speaking, music, and camera movement, not just a static image.
- Check the viewer experience. Make a test stream or recording. Confirm the intended destination receives it, the picture is framed correctly, speech and music are audible, and mouths match the sound. Monitor the platform’s stream-health indicators and fix problems before the service.
Use YouTube’s current official encoder guidance when choosing numeric settings; platform recommendations can change. There is no one bitrate or resolution that should be applied without regard to the available upload connection and encoder.

Rehearse the full service before going live
A rehearsal should exercise the same route, people, and kinds of sound and movement as the service itself. Use this checklist before the congregation depends on the stream:
- Camera is powered, focused, framed, and visible in the encoder.
- Stream audio comes from the intended mixer feed, with speech and music audible to a remote listener.
- Audio and video remain synchronized.
- The encoder is connected to the intended channel and platform destination.
- The stream reaches the platform and its health indicators show no issue that needs attention.
- Any recording or archive behavior is understood and checked against the church’s permissions and policies.
- The person operating the stream knows how to monitor it and whom to contact if the picture, sound, or connection fails.
Worship music copyright and platform rules
Technical ability to transmit a song does not establish permission to stream it. Check the rights for the actual repertoire and use, including whether the stream is archived, the territory where the church operates, and the platform’s rules.

What the cited US CCLI licenses describe
CCLI’s information here is specific to the United States. It says its US Streaming License extends the Church Copyright License to online worship using eligible songs performed live. Its US Streaming Plus License extends coverage to authorized master recordings and multitracks, subject to the applicable agreement. Confirm that each song’s publisher or catalog and planned use are covered; a license summary is not a substitute for the governing terms. Churches outside the United States should check local licensing and rights rather than assuming these US terms apply.
CCLI recommends including relevant license numbers in the stream description. Its US page says: “Your CCLI Streaming License provides permission to include authorized worship music during a service which is streamed or webcast.” The word “authorized” matters: coverage depends on repertoire and use.

YouTube can still interrupt a stream
YouTube says it scans live streams for third-party content. A stream may be interrupted or terminated, and licensed content may require the rights holder to allowlist the channel in Content ID. A license therefore does not guarantee that automated claims or interruptions will never occur. If a claim appears, check the platform notice and the relevant rights-holder or licensing guidance.
The Church of England also publishes guidance for worship music in its own church context; it is not a substitute for local legal advice or a license for churches elsewhere.

Common problems and what to check
- No camera picture: Check camera power, the physical connection, capture-device compatibility, and whether OBS has the correct video source selected.
- No stream audio: Confirm the mixer output is connected to the intended interface or computer input and that OBS is using that input. Listen to the feed rather than assuming the room speakers prove the stream mix is working.
- Speech or music is too quiet, distorted, or missing: Ask the sound operator to check the stream mix and verify levels from a remote listener’s perspective. Confirm that the intended mixer output and OBS source are selected.
- Audio and video do not match: Recheck the signal route and correct synchronization after a test; do not wait until the service to discover the offset.
- Unstable stream: Test the actual upload connection with the selected resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Reduce settings or address the connection if the encoder cannot sustain them, then retest under realistic movement and audio.
- Copyright warning or interruption: Review the platform’s notice, verify the song and recording use against the applicable license, and check whether the rights holder must allowlist the channel in Content ID.
