MPEG-DASH delivers video as HTTP-downloadable segments, while a Media Presentation Description (MPD) tells a compatible player what media options and segments are available. The player requests segments and chooses among the offered quality versions as playback continues. This allows quality to adapt, but the exact switching behavior depends on the player and how the video was encoded.
How MPEG-DASH playback works
A DASH presentation is prepared as a set of media choices, divided into segments and described in an MPD. The player reads that description, requests segments over HTTP, and selects which offered version to play.
- Encode multiple representations. The provider prepares versions of the same program that may differ in bitrate, resolution, codec, or frame rate. Together, those choices form the encoding ladder available to the player.
- Split the media into segments. The video and, where applicable, other media are divided into time-based pieces. The player can request pieces as needed instead of downloading the complete program before playback.
- Describe the presentation in an MPD. The Media Presentation Description provides information about the presentation, available media choices, and how the segments can be requested. MPEG describes the MPD as giving a DASH client sufficient information to adaptively stream content by downloading media segments from an HTTP server (MPEG’s DASH overview).
- Request and play segments. The client requests segments over HTTP and feeds them into its playback pipeline. It chooses from the representations the presentation offers; the server does not choose a quality for each viewer’s next segment.
- Adjust later requests when conditions change. As network conditions and the player’s own adaptation logic change, the client may request a later segment from a different representation. The offered encoding ladder limits the available choices.
A useful analogy is that the MPD is a menu and schedule, the media segments are the pieces ordered from the server, and the player chooses a suitable version of each piece. The analogy is only a way to picture the process; the MPD is a defined media description, not literally a menu.
What is an MPD file?
An MPD is the manifest for a DASH media presentation. It describes the presentation and gives the client information it needs to locate and request its media segments. It can also describe the representations available, such as different bitrates or resolutions.

The MPD does not itself contain the complete video. The client uses it to determine what media is available and how to request the pieces, then downloads those segments from an HTTP server.
How can the player change quality without stopping?
The player makes decisions segment by segment. If the presentation provides compatible alternatives, it can request a later segment at a different representation rather than restarting the whole program. A lower-bitrate choice may help when available bandwidth falls; a higher-bitrate choice may be usable when conditions improve. Which choice a player makes is an implementation decision, not a rule that guarantees a particular algorithm or outcome.

Switching is not necessarily instant or invisible. Representations may differ in resolution or codec profile, and decoder behavior, segment alignment, and player support affect whether a change is seamless. Some changes require decoder reconfiguration. A quality change can therefore be noticeable, and not every combination of representations can be switched between smoothly.
What MPEG-DASH specifies—and what it does not
MPEG-DASH means Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP. MPEG identifies it as supporting both live and on-demand streaming. The standard includes provisions for MPEG-4 and MPEG-2 Transport Stream formats, while the broader approach can also be used with other media formats (MPEG’s DASH overview).

DASH defines signaling and delivery structures; it does not guarantee a particular codec, bitrate, latency, or adaptation algorithm. A service defines the encoded representations it offers, and a player implements its own selection behavior. IETF operational guidance likewise treats the client’s bitrate choices and the server’s construction of offered bitrates as factors in network use (RFC 9317).
Although DASH supports live streaming, that fact alone does not establish a live stream’s latency or behavior. Those depend on the presentation and implementation. Likewise, DASH support at the standard level does not confirm that a particular browser, television, player, DRM system, or encoding stack supports a specific presentation. For a deployment, check the documentation for the actual player and delivery workflow, and consult MPEG’s current standard information for edition and amendment status.

How DASH fits into a streaming setup
- The encoder or content provider creates the representations and segments. Its encoding ladder determines the quality choices a client can request.
- The HTTP server or delivery network makes the MPD and media segments available to the client.
- The DASH player interprets the MPD, requests segments, and selects among the offered representations according to its own adaptation logic and the media’s compatibility constraints.
When evaluating a real deployment, check the manifest and segment formats, client and device support, codec and DRM needs, latency goals, and the existing encoding and CDN workflow. There is no universally best streaming format or player based on the DASH standard alone.
