VOD means video on demand: viewers choose a video from a catalogue and watch it when they want, rather than waiting for a scheduled broadcast. VOD describes how viewers access content—not whether it is free, subscription-based, ad-supported, downloadable, or available in every country.
How video on demand works
A viewer opens a service on a supported device, selects an available title, and starts playback. The service may stream the video or allow it to be downloaded, depending on its features and rules. That viewer-selected experience differs from a linear channel, where the channel sets what is playing at a particular time. VOD catalogues and access terms vary by service and title. Amazon Ads explains the common VOD models, while the Japan Fair Trade Commission’s 2024 overview describes internet-delivered catalogues from which users select content.
Common types of VOD
The acronyms describe different ways content is funded or sold; a service may combine models.
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| SVOD | Subscription video on demand: access is provided through a paid subscription. The catalogue and whether advertising is included depend on the service. |
| TVOD | Transactional video on demand: the viewer pays for an individual title, often by renting it temporarily or purchasing it under the provider’s terms. |
| AVOD | Advertising-based video on demand: viewers select titles on demand, and advertising helps fund access. |
| PVOD | Premium video on demand: premium content or access is offered for an additional charge. What counts as premium depends on the service. |
| FAST | Free ad-supported streaming TV: streamed channels generally present scheduled programming. Like AVOD, FAST can include ads, but viewers typically tune into a channel rather than choose an individual title from an on-demand catalogue. |
These labels do not guarantee that a particular title is included, ad-free, or available under a particular rental or purchase term. For example, Google’s Movies and TV partner documentation distinguishes rental, electronic sell-through purchase, subscription, and advertising policies for its platform; providers may use different terms and conditions.

VOD versus OTT: what is the difference?
OTT means delivery over the internet outside traditional cable or satellite distribution. VOD means viewers can choose when to watch available content. A service can be both OTT and VOD, but the terms are not interchangeable: one describes the delivery route, the other the viewing pattern. Amazon Ads’ OTT guide covers the delivery term.
What VOD does—and does not—tell you
The label tells you that viewers can choose content on demand. It does not by itself tell you the cost or the conditions of access. Before choosing a service or title, check:

VOD and live streaming are different
VOD is for choosing and watching available video at a time that suits the viewer. A live stream is broadcast as it happens, or is presented as a scheduled channel. A creator can also use previously recorded video as the content of a live YouTube broadcast; that does not make the broadcast itself VOD, because viewers are watching a live channel rather than selecting a title from an on-demand catalogue.
For creators who want uploaded recordings to run continuously as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a video or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera, and the computer at home does not need to stay on. Its per-slot price is the same for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encoding or quality tiers; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. $9.99 per month is the monthly option. UPI is available in India, alongside cards there; card checkout is available worldwide.

Regulatory definitions depend on jurisdiction and the specific rules involved. In the UK, Ofcom lists catch-up television, online film services, and archive libraries as examples of on-demand programme services, while noting that criteria determine which services fall under the UK’s ODPS rules. That UK scope is not a universal legal definition. For a compliance question, check the current guidance from the regulator in the relevant jurisdiction. Ofcom’s ODPS guidance explains the UK context.
