How to Set Wirecast Bitrate and Resolution for YouTube Live

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Wirecast, YouTube Live’s output resolution and bitrate come from the encoder preset selected for the YouTube destination. Open Output > Output Settings, choose YouTube, then select or edit a preset. For H.264, YouTube’s published recommendations include 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 8 Mbps for 720p at either 30 or 60 fps. Choose a target your upload connection and computer can sustain, then test the complete setup before broadcasting.

Where Wirecast sets bitrate and resolution

Wirecast sends the dimensions, frame rate, and bitrate configured in its selected encoder preset. The documented destination workflow is from Telestream’s Wirecast 16 Windows guide; labels and controls may differ in other releases and on macOS.

  1. Prepare a live event in YouTube Studio. Have the stream destination and key available if your chosen Wirecast workflow asks for them, and keep the key private.
  2. In Wirecast, open Output > Output Settings.
  3. Select YouTube as the destination and choose an encoder.
  4. Choose a suitable encoder preset. To adjust one, open the Encoder Presets controls, copy or create a preset, edit the available width, height, frame rate, and bitrate fields, then save it under a distinct name.
  5. Select the saved preset for the output and run a test before the event.

Telestream’s Wirecast 16 guide describes copying and editing a preset. It also identifies Strict Constant Bitrate as an option that holds the configured average bitrate strictly. The precise controls available depend on the encoder and Wirecast version.

What bitrate should I use for YouTube Live?

YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends these H.264 ingestion bitrates. These are YouTube’s published targets, not guarantees that a particular connection or computer can sustain them.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Output format YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps

The values are for YouTube ingestion. Its guidance lists different recommendations for other codecs and formats, including 50 Mbps for H.264 2160p60 and 34 Mbps for H.264 1440p60. Consult YouTube’s current table for the exact combination you intend to send; do not mistake a listed minimum for the recommended setting.

Set the bitrate in the chosen Wirecast encoder preset. Your available upload capacity needs headroom beyond the stream’s target bitrate, because other network use and variation in the connection can affect delivery. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and choosing a quality that can remain reliable.

How do I change resolution in Wirecast?

Edit the width and height in the encoder preset selected for the YouTube output. Choose a format that Wirecast’s encoder supports and that fits the production and connection. Higher resolution can retain more image detail but needs more bitrate and encoding capacity. At the same resolution, 60 fps can represent motion more smoothly than 30 fps, while YouTube’s H.264 recommendations require a higher bitrate for 1080p60 than for 1080p30.

Should I use 720p or 1080p for a live stream?

Use 1080p when the production benefits from the additional detail and both the computer and upload connection can sustain its recommended bitrate. Use 720p when a lower output load or more reliable delivery matters more. YouTube’s H.264 recommendation is 8 Mbps for 720p30 and 720p60, compared with 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. These are ingestion recommendations, so test the actual production rather than choosing by resolution alone.

Encoder and YouTube stream settings to check

  • Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS.
  • Codec: YouTube’s guidance includes H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. Choose only a codec exposed by your Wirecast version and the encoder in use; support varies by system and release.
  • Rate control: YouTube recommends CBR.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says it should not exceed four seconds.
  • Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance supports up to 60 fps. Match the preset to the frame rate you intend to produce.
  • Color: YouTube recommends Rec. 709 for SDR. For HDR, its cited guidance recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) and says AV1 is not supported for HDR.

YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for different devices and network conditions. The bitrate you set is for the incoming stream, not a promise that every viewer receives that same format or bitrate.

Should YouTube detect resolution automatically?

YouTube normally detects the stream’s resolution and frame rate automatically. Leave that behavior in place unless you specifically need manual control. For manual resolution selection, YouTube directs users to create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution in the stream settings. Follow the labels visible in the current YouTube Studio interface.

Test the stream before going live

  1. Run an upload speed test and confirm that the connection can support the planned stream reliably.
  2. Start a representative test with audio, movement, and production load similar to the actual event.
  3. Check YouTube Studio’s stream health and messages before the public broadcast begins.
  4. During the event, keep monitoring stream health and messages so you can respond to warnings or interruptions.

YouTube Help advises that tests include audio and movement similar to the planned stream. A static desktop test may not reveal the same encoding or connection demands as a real production.

How do I stop dropped frames on Wirecast?

Dropped frames can have different causes, so do not assume resolution is always responsible. If the computer is overloaded or the output is unstable, lower the selected resolution or frame rate, then repeat the representative test. Telestream support specifically suggests trying a lower-resolution encoding preset, such as 1280×720, as a CPU troubleshooting step; it is general guidance, not proof that every dropped-frame problem is caused by resolution.
