Short answer: YouTube explains how to connect a compatible encoder using a stream URL and key, but the available official guidance does not establish that current VLC supports YouTube’s recommended RTMPS ingest or can loop and restart a video reliably for uninterrupted 24/7 streaming. Treat VLC compatibility as unconfirmed: check your VLC version’s documentation and test a short, scheduled stream before relying on it. What you need to know before trying VLC
YouTube’s documented workflow is encoder-neutral: create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room, copy its ingest URL and stream key, and enter them in an encoder that supports the chosen protocol and settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. Its documentation does not certify VLC, and current VLC support for YouTube’s recommended RTMPS workflow or reliable continuous looping is not established here.
That distinction matters for a 24/7 broadcast. Sending a video to YouTube once is not the same as proving the player can loop without a gap, reconnect after an interruption, or keep one stream running indefinitely. Do not assume a menu option or a successful short test proves uninterrupted operation.
Check YouTube eligibility and prepare your stream
Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its general eligibility guidance also says streamers must be at least 16. Check the current requirements on YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming before scheduling.

Create the event and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule the stream you intend to test.
- In the stream’s settings, reveal the ingest URL and stream key. For encrypted ingest, select the RTMPS URL.
- Enter the URL and key only in an encoder you trust and have verified to support the selected protocol. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access may be able to send video to your stream. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.

Can VLC be used for this?
VLC is not confirmed as a suitable 24/7 YouTube encoder by the official materials available for this guide. In particular, they do not establish whether the current VLC release can publish to YouTube over RTMPS or repeat a file and resume it reliably after a process or network interruption. Because those are core requirements, there is no verified VLC menu path or configuration to give without guessing.

If you still want to evaluate VLC, first consult documentation for your installed VLC version and confirm explicitly that it supports YouTube’s required ingest protocol and the required looping behavior. Then follow the YouTube-side setup above and test privately or with a scheduled test stream. Do not put a long-running broadcast on the assumption that a local repeat setting will recover from a crash or connection loss.
Set encoder output to YouTube’s published specifications
These are YouTube’s current guidance points for a compatible encoder; they are not evidence that VLC implements each setting. Choose values appropriate to the source video, frame rate, and codec rather than blindly using the 1080p example.

Test the stream and monitor it
- Run a test using video with motion and audio similar to the material you plan to broadcast. A static menu screen is not a useful test of movement, sound, or sustained bitrate.
- Ensure your available upload bandwidth is about 20% above the stream’s bitrate, as YouTube recommends. Other devices and traffic sharing the connection can reduce the capacity available to the encoder.
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview. Verify that both moving video and audio arrive correctly.
- While live, monitor stream health, video quality, sound, and network stability. YouTube’s guidance is at Streaming tips and YouTube live streaming tips.
Understand the 24-hour and archive limits
A YouTube stream that sends continuously is not automatically proven to be a single uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. The encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that does not establish that a 24-hour stream will stay connected, be preserved as one archive, or restart cleanly after a failure. Common problems and what to check
- No preview or stream connection: Recheck that the event is live or scheduled, the ingest URL matches the selected RTMP/RTMPS mode, and the stream key is current. Confirm the encoder actually supports the chosen protocol.
- Video arrives but looks unstable: Compare the configured bitrate and keyframe interval with YouTube’s published settings, and check whether upload capacity has the recommended headroom.
- Picture works but audio is missing or wrong: Check the source file’s audio track and the encoder’s audio output, then verify sound in the Live Control Room preview before continuing.
- The file reaches its end: A successful initial send does not establish that VLC will repeat or restart the media without a gap. Verify looping behavior in the exact VLC build and test it through a full cycle.
- The stream stops after a disconnect or VLC closes: YouTube’s setup instructions do not establish VLC’s recovery behavior. Test reconnection and process restart separately; do not treat a single successful start as proof of unattended reliability.
- The broadcast ends or its archive is incomplete: YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours, not a guarantee of one 24/7 archive. Review the event’s archive settings and current YouTube guidance.
