If your Wirecast stream keeps dropping from YouTube, first find which link is failing: the YouTube event or stream key, Wirecast or the computer encoding the video, or your outbound internet connection. Check YouTube Live Control Room, test upload capacity, and inspect Wirecast’s output before changing settings at random. Work through the checks below in order, then run a test stream before your next broadcast.
1. Check YouTube Live Control Room and the stream configuration
Open the event in YouTube Live Control Room while Wirecast is attempting to stream. Check its status and stream health messages. These help distinguish an encoder or configuration problem from an outbound connection problem. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide recommends checking the encoder output and connection when diagnosing a stream that is not behaving as expected.
- Confirm Wirecast is sending to the intended YouTube event, not an older or different event.
- Verify the server URL and stream key in Wirecast match the settings for that event. YouTube explains these settings in Manage live stream settings.
- If a third-party encoder reports a startup error, YouTube’s documented troubleshooting step is to create or refresh the stream key in Live Control Room, then update the key in the encoder. This remedy is specifically for a startup error; refreshing a key is not established as a fix for every disconnect during a live broadcast.
Keep the stream key private. If you refresh it, update Wirecast before reconnecting so it does not try to send using the old key.
2. Check Wirecast and the computer encoding the stream
If YouTube is receiving a feed but reports problems with its picture or sound, inspect what Wirecast is actually outputting. YouTube advises checking encoder output and CPU load; if you record a local archive, its quality can help show whether a problem is already present before the video reaches YouTube.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What to inspect
- Update Wirecast to a current version available for your operating system, then reproduce the issue in a test stream. The available guidance does not identify a specific Wirecast version defect or menu path, so do not assume a particular release is responsible without evidence.
- Look for Wirecast encoder or output errors and check whether the outgoing picture and audio remain intact when YouTube disconnects.
- Watch CPU load during a test. If the computer is under heavy load, reduce other work and retest to see whether encoding becomes stable.
- If you make a local recording, compare it with the YouTube stream. A damaged or interrupted local recording points toward the source, computer, or encoder; an intact recording alongside a YouTube-side interruption makes the outbound connection or event configuration more likely to need attention.
3. Test upload bandwidth and network stability
Download speed does not establish whether your connection can reliably send a live stream. Test outbound upload capacity on the same connection you use for Wirecast. YouTube says to make sure the outbound connection can carry the stream bitrate and recommends leaving 20% headroom beyond the total bitrate. It also notes that other users or devices sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to the stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Find the total bitrate Wirecast is sending, including audio, and compare it with a measured upload rate on the streaming connection.
- Leave the recommended 20% headroom above the total bitrate; treat this as YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee against interruptions.
- Repeat the test at the time of day you normally stream if network use varies, and pause large uploads or downloads on your network during the test.
- If the connection test is unstable or does not provide sufficient upload capacity, contact your ISP. A different network path, such as testing over Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi, can help isolate a local wireless issue, but it will not resolve an incorrect key, encoder fault, or an ISP connection that lacks capacity.
YouTube cautions that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. If YouTube’s stream health indicates the feed is healthy but viewers still lose the broadcast, focus on the outbound connection rather than changing encoding settings without a reason.

4. Match encoder settings to the connection
Choose a bitrate that your tested upload connection can sustain with headroom. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the bitrate range appropriate to your resolution, frame rate, and codec; those ranges vary by format, so there is no single bitrate that fits every stream.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS for encoder delivery.
- Resolution and frame rate: Select the combination you intend to stream, then use the corresponding codec-specific bitrate range on YouTube’s settings page.
Change one relevant setting at a time and test again. Lowering bitrate may help when upload capacity is the limiting factor, but changing resolution or codec will not repair a bad stream key or an unstable connection.

5. Run a test and monitor the next broadcast
- Set up a test event and confirm Wirecast is using that event’s current server URL and key.
- Start the stream early enough to inspect YouTube Live Control Room’s status and stream health before the real broadcast.
- Check that the outgoing audio and video look right in Wirecast and that the computer is not showing encoder strain.
- Keep the Live Control Room health display visible during the event. Note the time and exact wording of any warning or disconnect, rather than relying on memory afterward.
YouTube recommends testing the encoder configuration and monitoring stream health. Its encoder setup guide covers creating a stream with an encoder.
6. Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Wirecast reports a startup error or YouTube does not receive the feed | Event selection, server URL, or stream key | Confirm the event and matching settings. For a third-party encoder startup error, refresh the key in Live Control Room and update it in Wirecast. |
| YouTube receives the feed, but audio or video is poor or intermittent | Wirecast output, computer load, or source | Inspect outgoing audio/video, check CPU load, and compare with a local archive if available. |
| Encoder output appears healthy, but YouTube reports connection trouble or the stream drops | Outbound network or available upload capacity | Test upload capacity against total bitrate with the recommended headroom, check other network use, and contact your ISP if the connection test fails. |
| The stream starts but disconnects repeatedly without a clear health message | Could be configuration, encoder, or network; the symptom alone does not identify the cause | Record the exact time and any errors, then repeat the checks above while watching Live Control Room and Wirecast output. |
7. What to collect if it still disconnects
If the checks do not resolve the problem, gather details before contacting Wirecast support or reporting a persistent issue to YouTube. This makes it easier to tell whether the break occurs in the encoder, event setup, or outbound connection.
