To loop one prerecorded video on YouTube Live, add it to an OBS Media Source and enable Loop. To play several videos in sequence, use OBS’s VLC Video source, add the files to its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. Then connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio.
Choose the OBS source that matches your videos
| What you want to play | OBS source | Setting to enable | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| One video repeatedly | Media Source | Loop | A local video file in a format OBS supports, including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, or WebM. |
| Several videos, one after another, repeatedly | VLC Video | Loop Playlist | VLC installed; match its architecture to OBS (for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC). |
OBS’s Media Source Loop property replays the file after playback completes. VLC Video is the playlist option; its visibility behavior can determine whether playback continues, pauses, or stops while the source is hidden. Check that behavior if you switch scenes or hide the source during the broadcast. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
Set up the video or playlist in OBS
- Create a scene. In OBS, add or select the scene you will use for the broadcast.
- Add the source. In the Sources panel, select +, then choose Media Source for one file or VLC Video for a playlist.
- Choose the media. For Media Source, select the local video file. For VLC Video, add the files to the playlist and arrange them in the intended playback order.
- Enable repetition. In Media Source properties, turn on Loop. For VLC Video, turn on Loop Playlist.
- Check the preview and audio. Confirm the expected video appears and that audio is audible at an appropriate level. For a playlist, check that the files play in the intended order.
Connect OBS to a YouTube Live encoder stream
- Create or schedule the stream. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a new encoder stream or schedule one. Choose the intended privacy setting and event details.
- Copy the connection details. In the stream setup, copy YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. The key is a credential that allows an encoder to send a feed to your YouTube stream; keep it private.
- Enter them in OBS. Open OBS Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and enter the stream key. If configuring a custom server, enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in the corresponding fields. Do not share or publish the key.
- Start the feed. Select Start Streaming in OBS. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room, check that audio and video are present, and then select Go live.
- Monitor the event. Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream health indicators, and check periodically that playback and audio continue as expected.
- End cleanly. End the event in the Live Control Room, then stop the encoder feed in OBS.
YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. OBS sends that encoder feed to YouTube using the stream URL and key. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
Choose stream settings and test before the event
Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations rather than selecting a bitrate blindly: the suitable bitrate depends on the resolution and the upload connection available to the computer running OBS. YouTube’s published guidance recommends RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; it says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Check the latest YouTube live encoder settings for its current recommendations, including bitrate values.

#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube recommends setting up the stream at least two hours before the event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Those are planning recommendations, not guarantees of connection quality. Use the advance time to confirm OBS connects, the Live Control Room preview works, and viewers can access the event as intended. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
Rights, archives, and long broadcasts
- Get rights for every element. Make sure you have permission to use the prerecorded video, music, and other audio or visual material in a live stream. Looping a file in OBS does not grant rights or bypass YouTube’s policies. The applicable rights can depend on the work, territory, and use.
- Know the archive limit. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume the same automatic archive outcome for a stream lasting 12 hours or longer.
- Understand DVR limits. YouTube’s cited settings guidance says DVR can let viewers pause and rewind, but rewind may be limited or unavailable on very long streams, including streams over 12 hours. See YouTube’s live stream settings.
Troubleshooting OBS video loops on YouTube Live
| Problem | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The single video stops instead of restarting. | The Media Source loop option is off, or the wrong source is playing. | Open that source’s properties and enable Loop; confirm the selected file is the intended one. |
| The playlist does not repeat. | Loop Playlist is off, or the source is not a VLC Video source. | Check that the source is VLC Video, the files are in its playlist, and Loop Playlist is enabled. |
| VLC Video is unavailable or will not load media. | VLC may not be installed or may not match OBS’s architecture. | Install VLC matching the OBS version; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
| The video pauses or stops after changing scenes. | The VLC Video source’s visibility behavior may pause or stop playback while hidden. | Review the source’s visibility behavior settings and choose the behavior appropriate for your scene changes. |
| YouTube receives no feed or shows no preview. | OBS may not be sending, or the stream URL or key may be missing or incorrect. | Check that OBS is streaming, verify the connection details in OBS against the current YouTube stream setup, and keep the key private. |
| The preview is present but has no sound or picture. | The source, scene visibility, or audio configuration may be wrong. | Check the OBS preview, confirm the source is visible, inspect audio meters, and verify the Live Control Room preview before going live. |
| Playback or connection quality is unstable. | The selected output settings may exceed what the upload connection can sustain. | Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance and choose settings appropriate to the actual upload connection; monitor stream health during the test. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the YouTube stream to continue without leaving a computer and OBS running at home, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos and playlists from the cloud. Upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The stream keeps running with your computer off, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card required, one free day per account.
