To connect Streamlabs Desktop to YouTube, copy the stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and enter it in Streamlabs’ encoder settings. If Streamlabs offers YouTube as a destination, select it; otherwise, enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in their separate fields. Start the encoder, confirm the feed appears in YouTube’s preview, and then go live when ready.
Before you add the key
Make sure live streaming is enabled for your YouTube channel. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Initial activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before a planned broadcast. YouTube also requires streamers to be at least 16 years old. Find and copy your YouTube stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create > Go Live.
- In Live Control Room, open the Stream tab.
- Create a stream or select the existing stream you intend to use. YouTube may load that stream’s previous settings, including its existing key.
- Copy the stream key shown in the stream settings. Keep it private: YouTube describes a stream key as like a password and address for your stream. A person with access to it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast. You can reset a compromised key in Live Control Room; if you do, replace the old key in Streamlabs with the new one. Enter the key in Streamlabs Desktop
Streamlabs Desktop’s current control names and exact menu location are not established here, so use the encoder’s destination and stream settings without relying on a particular menu label.
- Open Streamlabs Desktop and find its streaming or encoder settings.
- If YouTube is available as a streaming destination, select it and follow the prompts to connect the encoder. If the encoder asks for a stream key, paste the key copied from YouTube Studio.
- If there is no YouTube destination, choose the custom server or RTMP option. Copy YouTube’s server URL into the server field, then paste the key into the separate Stream Key field. Do not put the server URL in the key field or combine the two values.
- Save or apply the settings, then start the encoder. In YouTube Live Control Room, check that the incoming feed appears in the preview. If the stream is scheduled or YouTube requires a manual start, click Go live there only after checking the preview.
Test the feed before broadcasting
Check the YouTube preview for both picture and sound. Use representative movement and audio in the test rather than relying on a static image or silence; that makes it easier to catch a feed that connects but is not usable. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream-health messages while live. See YouTube’s live-streaming troubleshooting guidance.

Fix common connection problems
- YouTube receives no feed: Confirm that Streamlabs is sending to the stream selected in Live Control Room, and check that the encoder has been started.
- The server or key is rejected: Verify that the server URL and key are in their own fields. If a third-party encoder reports a start error, YouTube recommends retrieving the key again from Live Control Room and pasting it into the encoder. If you reset the key, the encoder must use the replacement key. See YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting steps.
- A key that worked before has stopped working: Recheck the selected stream and its key. Reusing a stream can load earlier settings, so avoid changing a working key unless needed; if the key was reset, update Streamlabs to match.
- The feed is present but the preview is silent or static: Check the audio source and video input in Streamlabs, then test again with sound and movement before starting the broadcast.
- You cannot start a YouTube live stream: Confirm the channel is eligible and that activation is complete. A newly enabled channel may need up to 24 hours before live streaming is available.
