Do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive to preserve a 24/7 lofi stream. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a stream you own and produce, record locally in OBS, save recordings as resilient segments if useful, and keep only the amount of footage your retention plan requires. Move completed files off the active disk or delete old ones; splitting a recording does not reduce its total storage use.
Why YouTube’s archive is not enough for a 24/7 stream
YouTube’s automatic archive is convenient for shorter broadcasts, but its stated limit matters for an uninterrupted stream: streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is a warning, not a guarantee that every long stream will be lost. YouTube also recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. See YouTube Help: Archive live streams.
YouTube DVR is a viewing and rewind feature, not a dependable full-length archive for a continuous day-and-night broadcast. YouTube says rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, with availability also depending on the device or app version. See YouTube Help: Turn on DVR on live streams.
Choose an archive workflow that matches what you control
| Method | Best use | Storage and recovery trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube automatic archive | Convenient access to eligible shorter streams | Not dependable as the sole archive for a 24/7 stream: YouTube says streams over 12 hours may not be captured. |
| Local OBS recording | Keeping a copy of a stream you produce through OBS | Uses local storage until recordings are moved or deleted. OBS recommends MKV because an ungraceful stop will not corrupt the entire file. |
| FFmpeg timed segments | Making recordings easier to transfer, index, or prune by age | Segments still use about the same total space as one continuous file if all are retained. Video segment boundaries can shift to keyframes. |
The OBS and FFmpeg details are documented in the OBS Standard Recording Output Guide and FFmpeg formats documentation. Recording advice here is for your own production output; it does not establish an official, supported method for continuously capturing another person’s YouTube stream.

Set a retention plan before recording
Estimate storage from your actual output
Disk use depends on the recording’s actual bitrate, how long you retain recordings, and where completed files are stored. There is no single capacity figure that applies to every lofi stream. Use the bitrate from your OBS recording settings or measure the files you create, then estimate the space needed for the hours or days you intend to keep locally. Choose an external archive drive or other destination based on that estimate, not on a generic recommendation.
Choose what stays on the active disk
- Decide how many hours or days of recordings must remain immediately available on the recording disk.
- Move completed recordings you want to preserve to a separate archive destination.
- Delete recordings or segments outside your retention window once you are confident they are no longer needed.
- Check free space periodically; a retention rule only works if files are actually moved or removed.
Record your own stream in OBS
- Choose the recording location. In OBS, open Settings > Output > Recording and set the recording path to the disk you intend to use. Keep the active recording disk separate from the destination used for long-term archiving if possible.
- Select a recording format. Choose MKV for the local recording. OBS recommends it because if the recording is stopped ungracefully, the entire file is not corrupted. The OBS Standard Recording Output Guide covers recording output and remuxing.
- Record and monitor storage. Start the stream and recording, then keep an eye on available space under your chosen retention plan. A 24/7 recording continues consuming storage while it runs.
- Move completed files and prune old material. When a recording or segment is complete, copy it to the archive destination if you are retaining it. Remove files outside your chosen window to keep the active disk from filling.
- Remux only when needed. If you need MP4 compatibility, OBS can remux a finished MKV recording into MP4. Do this after recording has finished.
OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide notes that ordinary MP4 and MOV files require finalization and may not be recoverable if writing is interrupted. Fragmented MP4 or MOV can provide chunk-level resilience, but codec support and editing compatibility vary. For a recording that must survive an unexpected stop, follow OBS’s MKV recommendation unless a specific compatibility need outweighs it.

Use timed segments when they make archives easier to manage
FFmpeg’s segment muxer can create timed files and a segment list. Segmentation can make it simpler to transfer, index, or delete older material without handling one extremely long file. It is an organization and retention aid, not a compression method: if you keep every segment, the total storage remains approximately the same as retaining the unsplit recording.
Do not assume every segment will end at the exact requested timestamp. Video segments generally begin at keyframes, so the actual boundaries can differ from the target duration. See the FFmpeg formats documentation for segment muxer behavior.
