Monitor an FFmpeg YouTube livestream in two places: watch FFmpeg’s process and machine-readable progress locally, then query YouTube’s Live Streaming API for ingest and health status. The first layer catches encoder exits and stalls; the second reveals whether YouTube is receiving the stream and reporting configuration issues. Neither alone confirms what viewers actually see, so use YouTube’s monitor preview when picture and sound need human verification.
What a useful health check should detect
A running FFmpeg process is not proof that a healthy stream is reaching YouTube. A monitor should distinguish local execution from remote ingest and report which one it checked.
| Signal | What it tells you | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exit status | Whether the local process ended, and its exit code. | Whether YouTube received a healthy stream before it ended. |
FFmpeg -progress updates |
Whether FFmpeg is still emitting program-friendly progress records. | Whether YouTube is ingesting or presenting the stream correctly. |
| YouTube Live Streaming API status | Whether YouTube reports receiving data and what health or configuration issues it reports. | Whether viewers can see and hear the feed as intended. |
| YouTube monitor preview | A person can inspect incoming picture and sound. | Continuous machine monitoring unless a person or separate process checks it. |
Monitor FFmpeg locally
Capture progress separately from diagnostics
Start FFmpeg with -progress directed to a pipe or another program-readable destination. Consume new progress records and track the emitted progress state. Keep FFmpeg diagnostics, usually written to stderr, in a separate log channel; do not make the health check depend only on parsing human-oriented status lines. FFmpeg documents -stats_period as the progress/statistics update interval, with a default of 0.5 seconds. That is an output cadence, not a recommended alert threshold. FFmpeg command-line documentation
Supervise the process and progress stream
- Record the process exit code. Alert if FFmpeg exits when the stream is expected to run.
- Track when the monitor last received a new progress record. If updates stop beyond a timeout chosen for your deployment, report a probable local stall rather than claiming a confirmed cause.
- Choose the progress-staleness timeout and alert hysteresis for the stream’s latency and reliability needs. There is no universal threshold implied by FFmpeg’s default update interval.
- Retain stderr logs for diagnosis, and keep secrets such as the YouTube stream key out of general logs and alert text.
When using RTMP-family output, FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes the server, port, application, and stream/playpath components. Avoid logging a fully expanded output URL if it contains the stream key. FFmpeg RTMP protocol documentation

Check YouTube’s stream and health status
Read both status fields
Query the YouTube Live Streaming API for the stream bound to the broadcast and inspect status.streamStatus, status.healthStatus.status, and status.healthStatus.configurationIssues. These fields answer different questions: streamStatus describes whether YouTube is receiving data and whether the configured stream is ready, inactive, or in error; healthStatus reports configuration-related health. YouTube Live Streams resource documentation
| Health status | Meaning | Monitor response |
|---|---|---|
good |
No issues at warning severity or worse. | Report the returned state and continue monitoring. |
ok |
No error-severity issue. | Retain any returned issues; do not treat the label as proof there are no warnings. |
bad |
One or more error-severity issues. | Alert with the issue details, not just the summary status. |
noData |
YouTube’s backend has no health information. | Mark health as unknown or not yet reported; it is not confirmation of health. |
Preserve YouTube’s explanation
For each configuration issue, include the returned type, severity, reason, and description in the alert. YouTube reports issues covering insufficient video ingestion as well as mismatched, suboptimal, or unsupported audio/video settings, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, codecs, and primary/backup stream configuration. For example, its description for video ingestion starvation says: “YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming. As such, viewers will experience buffering.” YouTube configuration issue documentation

Build the check around clear fault categories
- FFmpeg exited: report a local process failure and include its exit code and relevant diagnostic-log context.
- FFmpeg is alive, but progress is stale: report a probable local encoder or input stall. The timeout is your configured threshold, not a universal FFmpeg value.
- Progress continues, but YouTube is inactive, in error, or unhealthy: investigate the output connection, stream configuration, and remote ingest. Include YouTube’s issue details where available.
- YouTube says active and healthy, but viewers report a problem: inspect YouTube’s monitor preview and verify picture and sound. API ingest status is not a viewer-side quality test.
Keep local and remote observations distinct in notifications. For example, “FFmpeg progress received; YouTube reports inactive” is more useful than a single ambiguous “stream down” alert.
Authorize the YouTube API check securely
YouTube Live Streaming API methods require OAuth 2.0. Service-account flow is not supported for YouTube Live, so authorize through a YouTube user/channel account that can access the relevant stream resource. Store access and refresh tokens in a protected credential store; do not put bearer tokens in query strings or logs. YouTube Live API authorization guide

The official guidance does not establish one generally appropriate polling interval or a method-specific quota cost for this monitor. Select a cadence based on the number of streams, required alert latency, and current API quota documentation; do not assume that polling every FFmpeg progress update is appropriate.
Check RTMPS connection details
If FFmpeg publishes over RTMPS, verify the protocol, YouTube ingestion endpoint, port, and hostname used for TLS SNI. YouTube’s RTMPS requirements specify port 443 on the ingestion server: “The connection must be made to port 443 on the ingestion server.” Wrong server names, ports, or TLS setup can cause SSL errors; trying cleartext RTMP against an RTMPS endpoint can lead to timeouts. Verify the incoming feed before relying on automation
Before transitioning a broadcast to testing, YouTube’s documented workflow says to confirm that the bound live stream is active. Its lifecycle guide also describes embedding a monitor stream to inspect the incoming feed. Use API fields for automated ingest and health checks, and use the preview for a human check of picture and sound; make clear in alerts which kind of check passed. YouTube Life of a Broadcast guide
Troubleshoot common health-check results
| Symptom | Likely area to investigate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits unexpectedly | Local process, input, or output failure. | Check the exit code and stderr diagnostics, then verify the input and output configuration. |
| FFmpeg stays alive but progress stops | Possible encoder or input stall, or a failure in progress collection. | Check the progress reader and process logs before deciding whether to restart the encoder. |
| Progress continues but YouTube is not active | Output connection, stream configuration, or YouTube ingest. | Inspect the API status and the exact returned configuration issue; verify the RTMP/RTMPS destination and stream setup. |
Health is noData |
YouTube has not supplied health information. | Report unknown/not yet reported and check stream status separately; do not mark it healthy. |
| RTMPS SSL error or timeout | Protocol, port, hostname/SNI, or TLS setup. | Confirm RTMPS, the correct ingestion hostname, and port 443. |
| API reports active and healthy, but viewers complain | Viewer experience not represented by ingest status alone. | Inspect monitor preview for picture and sound and compare with the reported symptom. |
