How to Make a 24/7 YouTube Lofi Stream Use Less CPU

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To lower CPU use in a 24/7 YouTube lofi stream, first switch from software encoding to a compatible hardware encoder if one is available. Then simplify the OBS scene, reduce oversized sources and filters, and test a lower output resolution or frame rate if the visual still looks right. Keep YouTube’s ingest settings within its guidance and test a representative stream. There is no universal CPU-saving percentage or single best lofi setting: the result depends on your hardware, software, and scene.

Why a lofi stream can use CPU

Streaming work has two distinct parts. Encoding turns your video frames into a stream YouTube can receive; scene rendering and compositing prepare those frames from your sources. Changing the encoder can move encoding work off the CPU, while removing costly sources and filters can reduce the work needed to build each frame. You may need to address both.

OBS Project says hardware encoders take encoding work off the CPU and use a specialized GPU component. That can help when software encoding is the bottleneck, but the best option depends on your computer, operating system, drivers, and encoder generation. OBS also cautions that older hardware encoders may deliver lower image quality at the same bitrate than software encoding with the default veryfast preset. Compare the actual output rather than assuming the quality will be identical (OBS Project: Hardware Encoding).

Step 1: Check and test your encoder

  1. In OBS, open Settings > Output. Check the encoder selected for streaming. If it is x264, OBS is using software encoding on the CPU.
  2. Check the available hardware encoders. OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync, and Apple VideoToolbox on supported systems. Availability depends on the installed hardware, operating system, and drivers (OBS Project: Hardware Encoding).
  3. Select a compatible hardware encoder and run a test. Keep the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate consistent during the comparison so you can judge whether CPU use improves and whether the picture remains acceptable. Monitor both the stream and system behavior during a representative session.
  4. Keep the software encoder if it works better for your setup. Hardware encoding is not automatically the best-quality option on every machine, particularly with older encoder generations. The relevant trade-off is CPU relief versus GPU use and the quality you actually see.

Step 2: Make the OBS scene less expensive

A static lofi illustration usually does not need a complicated scene. OBS notes that sources can use resources even when they are not visible, and that browser sources and filters can contribute to performance problems. Simplify the scene before buying hardware (OBS Project: Encoding Performance Troubleshooting).

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Remove sources that are unused, duplicated, or not needed in the live scene.
  • For static artwork, use an image source rather than a browser source where practical.
  • Reduce browser-source dimensions to the size actually displayed. Avoid oversized media files when a smaller source will look the same at stream resolution.
  • Remove filters and animated overlays that do not materially improve the scene. A mostly static background and a simple visualizer may need less work than multiple moving layers.
  • Use media or VLC sources for video and audio assets as appropriate, rather than building a browser-based scene unnecessarily.

Step 3: Test lower output resolution or frame rate

Do not encode detail your lofi visual does not use. Try a lower output resolution or frame rate if it still looks acceptable to viewers; inspect the stream itself, including text, fine artwork, and any moving elements. OBS identifies source resolution as a performance consideration, while YouTube’s bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The official guidance does not establish one optimal setting specifically for lofi streams.

Change one setting at a time and retest. If reducing resolution or frame rate helps, confirm the picture remains clear enough and use the bitrate guidance for the codec and output you selected.

Step 4: Keep YouTube ingest settings in range

YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult the current table for your exact output rather than treating one bitrate as universal (YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

For reference, YouTube lists 8 Mbps for H.264 at 720p30 and 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not CPU-saving targets; they do not show that a higher setting improves a static lofi stream. Use the value for your chosen codec and format from YouTube’s table.

Step 5: Test stream health and upload capacity

  1. Run a test with representative content. Include the audio and amount of movement you expect in the real stream. YouTube recommends testing similar audio and movement before going live.
  2. Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages. Monitor the test rather than relying only on OBS’s local preview; YouTube recommends checking stream health during the event (YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
  3. Leave upload headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend keeping 20% room beyond the total stream bitrate. This is network guidance, not a CPU setting: insufficient upload capacity can cause stream reliability problems even if the encoder is not CPU-bound (YouTube Help: Streaming tips).

What to try when CPU use is still high

  • CPU remains high with x264 selected: test a compatible hardware encoder, then compare picture quality and stability.
  • CPU remains high after changing encoders: remove unused sources, browser overlays, and filters; reduce source dimensions; then retest. Rendering work may be the remaining issue.
  • The stream looks worse after switching encoders: compare at the same bitrate and output settings. Older hardware encoders can produce lower quality than software encoding at the same bitrate; try another compatible encoder or return to the previous option if it looks better.
  • YouTube reports a stream issue but CPU is not high: check the codec, CBR setting, keyframe interval, bitrate for the selected output, and available upload bandwidth. Network limits and ingest configuration are separate from CPU load.
  • You are considering a graphics-card upgrade: first confirm that your current computer lacks a suitable hardware encoder and that the workload is actually CPU-bound. Simplify and test the existing setup before buying; not every lofi stream needs a GPU upgrade.
