You can run a 24/7 rain ambience stream on a Raspberry Pi, but first choose what “stream” means: a self-hosted audio radio feed uses software such as Liquidsoap and an Icecast server, while a YouTube Live broadcast needs an encoder sending audio and video to YouTube. The Pi can be configured headlessly, but no particular Pi setup is certified here for uninterrupted 24/7 operation; plan to test recovery, power, storage, temperature and network stability before relying on it.

Choose the kind of stream you want

Decision Self-hosted audio radio YouTube Live
What listeners receive An audio feed at a server mount point, played in a compatible player A live audio-and-video broadcast on YouTube
Main components Audio generator/encoder, Icecast relay server and player Encoder, YouTube server URL and stream key, plus Live Control Room
Delivery and bandwidth Your server and network deliver audio; more listeners require more bandwidth at the server YouTube distributes the broadcast; your upload connection must sustain the encoder’s bitrate
What to validate Mount point, server configuration and listener access Stream key, endpoint, codec and bitrate, preview and stream health

Choose internet radio if you want an audio-only feed under your own server address. Choose YouTube if you want a platform-hosted live video, such as a rain visual paired with audio. These are different architectures, not interchangeable settings. Liquidsoap describes its role this way: “Liquidsoap generates and encodes the stream, sends it to an Icecast server, and the Icecast server relays it to all its listeners.” Liquidsoap’s Icecast documentation explains the generator, server and listener arrangement.

Prepare the Raspberry Pi

Install and access the operating system

Use a Pi model capable of running the software you choose, boot media with an operating system installed, and a reliable network connection. For a headless, command-line setup, Raspberry Pi documents Raspberry Pi OS Lite and recommends at least an 8 GB card. Configure network access and remote access—SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect—in Raspberry Pi Imager before first boot. See the Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation for current setup guidance.

Match the power supply to the exact model

Check the current official recommendation for your particular board and any attached peripherals before buying a supply. Raspberry Pi’s surfaced guidance includes 5 V at 5 A for Pi 5/Pi 500 (with peripheral-current limits at 3 A), 5 V at 3 A for Pi 4 Model B/Pi 400, and 5 V at 2.5 A for older listed models including Pi 3 and Zero. The hardware documentation says models require 5.1 V and that consumption varies with attached peripherals; consult Raspberry Pi hardware documentation for model-specific details.

Decide how audio enters or leaves the setup

For a file-based stream, the audio can be read from local storage by your software; no audio output jack is needed just to encode and send it. If you need local monitoring or a physical audio output, Raspberry Pi lists HDMI and USB across models, Bluetooth where equipped, and a 3.5 mm jack on Pi 1 through Pi 4. That auxiliary jack is line-level and may need amplification. A HAT or USB audio interface is optional, not a baseline requirement. Check the model’s audio options before choosing hardware.

Build a self-hosted rain radio feed

Plan the audio source and relay

Prepare a rain recording or playlist that you have the right to use and make it available locally. Liquidsoap can generate and encode the feed; Icecast relays that feed to listeners. The service needs a mount point—an address path listeners use in a compatible player—and the server must be reachable over the network. Liquidsoap’s quick start illustrates the generator, streaming server and listener model. Its example also makes the capacity trade-off clear: each additional listener consumes more bandwidth. Do not assume a listener limit without sizing and testing your actual server and connection.

Configure, protect and test

  1. Choose the audio file or playlist. Keep the source available locally so playback does not depend on a remote file remaining reachable.
  2. Configure the generator and encoder. Point Liquidsoap at the audio and define the output format appropriate for your intended listeners. Follow the syntax for the Liquidsoap release you install; the cited setup material is development documentation marked 2.5.x, and package names and commands can vary by operating-system release.
  3. Configure the Icecast destination. Set the server address, mount point and credentials in the encoder configuration. Keep passwords private; do not publish them in a guide, stream description or public repository.
  4. Make the server reachable. Check firewall and network routing so a listener outside the Pi can reach the Icecast mount point. A service that works only from the Pi itself is not yet a public radio stream.
  5. Test from another device. Open the mount point in a compatible player on a different device and confirm that audio starts and continues. Test from outside the local network if the intended audience is on the internet.

The cited documentation establishes the architecture and configuration shape, but not a verified, version-pinned installation command sequence for every current Raspberry Pi OS release. Confirm the current package and configuration syntax for your chosen OS and Liquidsoap version rather than pasting commands intended for another release.

Send rain ambience to YouTube Live

Set up the broadcast in YouTube

For YouTube, produce both audio and video in an encoder. A static or slowly changing rain visual is enough if it suits the stream; avoid spending Pi capacity or upload bandwidth on resolution or frame rate the visual does not need. In YouTube’s Live Control Room, obtain the server URL and stream key, enter them in the encoder, start sending the stream, and use the platform’s broadcast controls to preview and go live. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your broadcast setup.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Its encoder guidance says to choose quality that fits the upload connection, run a speed test, test representative audio and video, and monitor stream health and messages. It lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video codecs for RTMP/RTMPS, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant-bitrate encoding. Bitrate recommendations depend on resolution, frame rate and codec, so use the current matching row in YouTube’s live encoder settings rather than applying one bitrate to every setup.

Test the actual Pi and connection

  1. Check upload capacity. Run a speed test on the connection the Pi will use. Leave practical headroom instead of setting the encoder to consume the full measured upload rate.
  2. Choose a sustainable profile. For a mostly static rain scene, start with a modest resolution and frame rate that the selected Pi and connection can maintain. This is a reliability-oriented recommendation, not a performance guarantee for a particular Pi model.
  3. Use the correct endpoint and key. Enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in the encoder. Use RTMPS where the encoder supports it.
  4. Send a representative test. Test the actual rain audio and visual, then inspect the preview, stream-health indicators and messages in Live Control Room before treating the setup as ready.
  5. Monitor after going live. Watch for dropped frames, connection warnings and audio problems; adjust the encoder profile if the connection or device cannot sustain it.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement is not a promise of one uninterrupted 24-hour archive, so do not rely on it as a guarantee that a continuous day-long broadcast will be preserved as one recording. See YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance for its current workflow.

Make continuous operation more resilient

A successful test broadcast proves that the chosen setup worked during that test; it does not establish guaranteed 24/7 uptime. The cited Raspberry Pi and streaming documentation does not certify a specific model, storage medium, power arrangement or software configuration for uninterrupted operation under this workload. Treat continuity as something to engineer and validate.

  • Configure the streaming service to restart after a process failure, and verify that behavior rather than assuming it.
  • Keep the rain source local and test that the playlist returns to playback after a reboot.
  • Simulate a reboot and a network interruption; check that the service recovers and that a separate listener or YouTube’s stream-health display confirms audio has resumed.
  • During a representative run, check power stability, storage, temperature and network connection. Raspberry Pi documents power and thermal management, but the cited material does not establish an endurance or failure-rate figure for this project.
  • Keep server passwords and YouTube stream keys private, and know how to replace credentials if they are exposed.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely checks Practical fix
No audio from the internet-radio mount point Is Liquidsoap reading the correct local file? Is the Icecast address, mount point and credential configuration correct? Check the encoder and server logs, confirm the source file is readable, then test the mount point from another device.
The radio works locally but not for outside listeners Is the Icecast server reachable from outside the local network? Are firewall rules and routing correct? Resolve external reachability and repeat the test from a device not on the Pi’s local network.
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed Check the server URL, stream key, network connection and encoder messages. Re-enter the current endpoint and key carefully, protect the key, and use YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages to locate the failure.
YouTube reports unstable stream health Does the chosen bitrate exceed what the upload connection can sustain? Can the Pi encode the selected resolution and frame rate? Run a speed test, lower the profile or bitrate using YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec and video mode, then retest representative content.
Audio stops after reboot or a process failure Does the service start automatically, and can it find the local audio source after boot? Configure and test service restart behavior, then confirm recovery with a listener or YouTube’s health display.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is specifically a prerecorded rain video running as a YouTube Live stream, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining a Pi and encoder at home: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one price regardless of quality; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream; and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube video streams, not an internet-radio Icecast feed or a live camera broadcast. Start the free day on StreamNeo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Raspberry Pi broadcast live camera footage with this rain ambience setup?

The file-based approaches described here use prerecorded audio or video, not a live camera feed. A camera-based broadcast requires a separate capture and encoder setup.

Will YouTube keep one archive of a 24-hour stream?

YouTube’s stated automatic-archive condition covers streams under 12 hours; it does not promise one uninterrupted archive for a 24-hour broadcast.
