Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it. HLS is an alternative for compatible workflows, but it requires segmented output and a rolling media playlist. YouTube video playlists are for organizing published videos, archives and clips—not for carrying a live broadcast.
First, distinguish the two meanings of “playlist”
A YouTube video playlist is a collection of published videos that viewers can browse or play in sequence. An HLS playlist is a technical manifest describing media segments that a compatible encoder sends as part of a live stream. It is not a setting that turns a channel playlist into a live radio broadcast. For a live program, the encoder sends the feed to YouTube Live; after the event, ordinary YouTube playlists can organize its archive and highlights. YouTube’s encoder guide and HLS setup guide describe these separate workflows.
Choose RTMPS for the conventional setup
For a standard encoder workflow, RTMPS is the practical default. YouTube recommends the secure form of RTMP and documents the supported encoder settings. Create or schedule the event in YouTube Live Control Room, then enter the server URL and stream key in the encoder. The encoder is the software or hardware that converts and sends the program. Keep the stream key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to the event. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and YouTube’s encoder settings.
Starting settings for an audio-led SDR stream
- Video: H.264.
- Audio: AAC or MP3; YouTube’s documented stereo settings include 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 kbps.
- Bitrate: Use constant bitrate and select a value appropriate to the chosen resolution and frame rate in YouTube’s current settings guidance; do not assume one bitrate fits every output.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe frequency, as recommended in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- Connection: Prefer RTMPS when the encoder supports it.
These are encoder-to-YouTube input settings, not a promise that viewers receive the identical encoded feed. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream for playback across devices and network conditions. Check YouTube’s current bitrate, resolution and encoder recommendations against your output before going live.

Use HLS only when your workflow needs it
HLS is a specific live-ingestion alternative, not a YouTube channel playlist option. It may suit workflows that need HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP, but requires an encoder capable of producing HLS in YouTube’s required form. YouTube’s instructions specify transport-stream (TS) segments, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, 1–4 second segment duration, and a rolling list with no more than five outstanding segments. HLS does not support byte ranges and has higher latency than RTMP. See Set up an HLS stream.

Plan a real 24/7 operation, not just a format
Test the feed and leave bandwidth headroom
Test with representative music, artwork or motion, and the actual encoder settings before scheduling a long run. Watch YouTube’s stream health and confirm the incoming audio and video are stable. YouTube recommends upload capacity with a 20% margin above the stream’s bitrate; this is operational guidance, not a guarantee against outages. Decide how DVR and archives should work
YouTube’s live settings include DVR controls that affect whether viewers can pause or rewind during a stream. The cited encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; they do not establish an unlimited duration for one uninterrupted event. For a continuous radio channel, verify current event-duration behavior and test the planned restart and archive workflow rather than assuming a single event will run indefinitely. Separate technical readiness from music rights
A successful encoder connection does not grant permission to broadcast the music. Confirm that the rights you hold cover the actual tracks, the territories where viewers will listen, and the intended use or monetization. YouTube’s technical setup pages do not establish whether any particular music catalog is cleared for a 24/7 broadcast.

Organize the videos viewers will find afterward
Use ordinary YouTube playlists to make the channel easier to navigate: for example, keep full stream archives together and make separate collections for programs or highlight clips. That organization affects how viewers find published videos; it does not change the live ingestion format. YouTube’s live-stream promotion guidance covers promoting a stream and its related content.
