How to Reduce VPS Bandwidth for an FFmpeg YouTube Stream

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To reduce a VPS’s outgoing data use while streaming to YouTube, lower the bitrate of FFmpeg’s encoded output. If you need a larger reduction, lower the resolution or frame rate too, then test the picture and stream stability. Confirm the result in your VPS provider’s usage meter: its quota and billing rules determine what you are actually charged for.

What controls bandwidth use?

Your VPS sends an ingest feed to YouTube. The encoded output bitrate is the main control over how much data that feed transfers over time. Resolution and frame rate affect the bitrate needed for the quality you want, but changing them does not guarantee a particular visual result; test with your actual content.

YouTube transcodes an ingested live stream into multiple playback formats for viewers. You do not need to send a separate feed from the VPS for every viewer rendition. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains this process in its live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Choose a lower target without guessing at quality

YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations, verified in 2026, are useful quality starting points, not universal minimums. You can test lower targets if your content and quality requirements allow.

Output YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate
720p at 30 or 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

These figures are YouTube recommendations, not a promise that a lower bitrate will look acceptable—or that the recommended rate is necessary for every video. Codec recommendations differ for AV1 and H.265; check YouTube’s current encoder settings table before selecting those codecs or other resolutions.

  • For mostly static or low-motion material, try a lower output rate and inspect the result.
  • If you need a substantial reduction, consider reducing resolution or frame rate as well as bitrate.
  • Use representative movement and audio when testing; a static test image will not show how motion affects quality.

Change FFmpeg’s output bitrate

FFmpeg’s -b:v option sets the output video bitrate. Audio has its own bitrate setting, such as -b:a. Put output options before the output URL they apply to; FFmpeg options generally take effect on the next input or output. The official FFmpeg documentation demonstrates bitrate control with -b:v.

There is no safe universal command for every VPS stream: the right command depends on your input, chosen encoder and codec support, required quality, and output destination. Adapt your existing command by changing the encoded output target, and keep your stream key private.

Do not use -c copy as a way to lower bitrate. Streamcopy passes packets without decoding and re-encoding, so it cannot reduce the media rate on its own. It can avoid re-encoding when the source already has suitable parameters, but reducing bitrate requires encoding to a lower target or transforming the video.

You can also reduce the audio bitrate separately if that is appropriate for the content. Check the resulting audio quality rather than assuming that reducing it will be inaudible.

Keep the connection stable while reducing transfer

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for its listed encoder settings and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Apply the relevant settings for your selected encoder and confirm its behavior against the locally installed FFmpeg version. YouTube also recommends leaving 20% upload headroom: the total stream bitrate should remain below the upload capacity available to the VPS. If you send both primary and backup outputs, account for both when estimating required capacity.

For encrypted delivery, YouTube recommends RTMPS. It protects the connection but does not meaningfully reduce the amount of media data transferred. See YouTube’s guidance on encrypting a stream using RTMPS.

  1. Record the current outgoing bitrate and identify every simultaneous output, including any backup connection.
  2. Choose the lowest resolution and frame rate that meet your viewing requirements, then set a lower encoded bitrate with your existing FFmpeg command.
  3. Keep the applicable keyframe interval and CBR behavior for your encoder, and leave upload headroom.
  4. Test with representative video and audio. Check the incoming bitrate and stream health in YouTube, then compare the VPS provider’s transfer meter over a known interval.
  5. If quality or delivery stability is poor, adjust gradually—raise the bitrate, lower resolution or frame rate, or revisit the capacity available to the VPS.

Estimate data use and check your VPS billing

A useful decimal estimate is bitrate in Mbps × 0.45 ≈ GB per hour. For example, an 8 Mbps feed is about 3.6 GB per hour: 8 megabits per second × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8 bits per byte ÷ 1,000 megabytes per decimal GB. This estimate excludes protocol overhead and may not match your provider’s metering.

To estimate a month, multiply the measured or target hourly transfer by the hours you stream. Then compare that estimate with the plan’s included outbound transfer and overage terms. Providers may define and measure traffic differently, so check the provider’s usage meter and billing definition rather than assuming an allowance or charge.

Troubleshoot bandwidth and stream problems

  • Transfer remains high after changing resolution: Check FFmpeg’s actual outgoing bitrate; changing the input or display resolution alone may not change the encoded output rate as intended.
  • Quality becomes visibly worse: The lower rate may not suit the motion or detail in the video. Test a higher bitrate or reduce resolution or frame rate to find an acceptable balance.
  • YouTube reports unstable delivery: Check total upload capacity, include simultaneous primary and backup feeds, and leave the recommended 20% headroom. Review stream health while testing.
  • The VPS meter and estimate differ: The estimate excludes protocol overhead, and provider metering and billing rules vary. Use the provider’s measured usage and plan terms for cost decisions.
  • A copied stream will not get smaller: -c copy does not re-encode. Use an encoded output with a lower video bitrate target to reduce the media rate.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a different option from running FFmpeg on your VPS: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. The DIY steps above remain the relevant route when you specifically need to lower the bitrate of an FFmpeg-to-YouTube feed.

  • Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required.

Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start your free day.
