You can send a Raspberry Pi’s camera feed, an IP-camera stream, or a media file to YouTube Live with FFmpeg over Wi-Fi. The right command depends on the input and on what your Pi’s FFmpeg build can handle: when a compatible source is already encoded, copying its streams can reduce Pi workload; otherwise FFmpeg must encode or convert them. YouTube supplies the ingest URL and private stream key, and YouTube Studio shows whether the incoming feed is healthy.
This is a setup guide, not a universal copy-and-run command. Before streaming, identify your input, check the Pi’s software and encoding capabilities, and rehearse at the intended settings over the same Wi-Fi route you will use live.
How the stream works
The complete path is: a camera or file provides audio and video; FFmpeg reads those streams and either copies compatible ones or encodes them; FFmpeg sends the result over your network to YouTube’s ingest endpoint; YouTube reports reception and stream health in Live Control Room.
A successful FFmpeg connection alone does not prove that YouTube is receiving the intended resolution, audio, or a healthy stream. Check both FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s preview and health messages.

Choose the workflow for your input
| Input | What FFmpeg needs to read | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| USB camera connected to the Pi | The device’s capture interface and any required input options | Device names and supported formats vary by operating system, driver, and camera. Confirm that the Pi can read the video and that an audio source is available if needed. |
| RTSP or other IP camera | The camera’s network stream URL and any required credentials | If it already supplies compatible H.264 video and AAC audio, test copying those streams before attempting a costly re-encode. Camera reachability and the Pi’s outbound connection to YouTube are separate network paths. |
| Media file | The local file path | Inspect the file’s video and audio codecs and parameters. A file is not automatically suitable for live ingest just because FFmpeg can open it. |
| Raspberry Pi camera | A camera capture workflow, potentially using Picamera2 | Picamera2 documents H.264 encoding and bitrate controls, but the capture-to-FFmpeg handoff, audio handling, and performance depend on your software and hardware. There is no single universal pipeline established for every Pi setup. |
For a Pi camera, the capture application may encode video before FFmpeg publishes it. If you pipe capture output into FFmpeg, you must establish how that pipe is framed and which process supplies audio; do not assume a video-only pipe provides a complete YouTube stream.
Check the Pi and FFmpeg before configuring YouTube
-
Record your exact Raspberry Pi model and Raspberry Pi OS version, along with the camera or file source you plan to use.
-
Run
ffmpeg -versionand keep the output. Confirm that the installed build has the needed input and output support and, if you need encoding, the encoder you intend to use. A command that works on one build or Pi model may not work on another. -
Confirm that FFmpeg can open the source and identify its audio and video streams before sending anything to YouTube. If there is no audio stream, decide how you will provide audio rather than silently assuming one is present.

If using Picamera2, consult the Raspberry Pi Picamera2 documentation for its camera and H.264 encoding controls. Its documented controls do not guarantee that a particular board can encode your desired resolution and frame rate in real time.
Set up an encoder stream in YouTube
-
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream configured for an encoder. Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the endpoint YouTube provides for your setup; do not copy an endpoint from an old example.
-
Start with automatic resolution detection unless you deliberately need a custom key or stream-settings workflow. YouTube’s current encoder guidance accepts RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. For a straightforward Pi setup, H.264 video and AAC audio are a practical target, subject to your FFmpeg build and hardware.
-
Treat the stream key like a password. Do not paste a populated command into a public post, screenshot, shared script, or log. If the key is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings.

Choose stream copy or encoding
Try stream copy when the source already fits
If the source provides compatible H.264 video and AAC audio at settings appropriate for the stream, try passing those streams through without re-encoding. Copying avoids the extra CPU work of encoding on the Pi. Compatibility still depends on the actual source parameters, FFmpeg build, output format, and YouTube ingest requirements; inspect the output and verify it in YouTube’s preview.
Encode only when conversion is needed
If the input codec, resolution, frame rate, or audio does not fit the intended output, encode or convert it. Select settings the specific Pi can sustain and that your Wi-Fi connection can carry. Hardware and software encoder availability varies, so verify the encoder in your installed build rather than assuming a particular option exists.
YouTube’s current H.264 guidance recommends these video bitrates. They are platform recommendations, not a performance guarantee for your Pi or Wi-Fi:
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. Its guidance lists 128 Kbps for stereo audio and 44.1 kHz stereo sampling. Match the video bitrate to the resolution and frame rate you actually choose; do not select a higher mode just because the table lists it.

Build the FFmpeg publish command
The following is a schematic shape, not a ready-to-run command. Replace the input and options with those appropriate to your source, and supply the exact ingest URL and key from your own Live Control Room. The output format, codecs, audio presence, timestamp behavior, and RTMP-family endpoint must fit your input and current YouTube settings.
ffmpeg [input options] -i "YOUR_INPUT"
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_PRIVATE_STREAM_KEY"
For a source whose video is already compatible, the video portion may use stream copy rather than encoding; if you need to encode, use an encoder and settings available in your build. The schematic includes AAC audio encoding, so it is not suitable unchanged for every source—for example, one with no audio input. Do not leave the bracketed explanatory options in a command you run.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted extension to RTMP. Prefer the RTMPS endpoint when YouTube provides it and your FFmpeg build and setup support it. FFmpeg documents RTMP as media streaming over TCP/IP and documents the protocol and URL options in its protocol documentation. Do not assume every endpoint, build, or source configuration behaves identically.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the Wi-Fi path and confirm YouTube reception
-
Measure upstream capacity from the Pi’s actual location and over the Wi-Fi network you will use. YouTube says the outbound connection must be sufficient for the selected stream bitrate. A speed-test peak is not proof that the connection will sustain a live feed; leave room for audio and variation.

-
Start a rehearsal at the intended resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Include motion and sound comparable to the planned stream. YouTube’s advice is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
-
Check FFmpeg’s output for input errors and whether encoding or stream copying is keeping pace. Separately check YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages to confirm it is receiving the expected feed.
-
Monitor the stream during the rehearsal. If it drops or YouTube reports health problems, reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and test again. If available, compare with Ethernet as a diagnostic, not as a requirement.
Troubleshoot by layer
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot open the input | Whether the camera, file, or network camera is reachable and whether the input options match that source. | Test the input locally first. For an IP camera, check reachability between the Pi and camera before investigating YouTube’s endpoint. |
| FFmpeg connects, but YouTube does not show the expected feed | FFmpeg’s reported streams, output codecs and settings, and YouTube’s preview and health messages. | Check that the selected output format and codecs suit the endpoint; a connection by itself does not establish that the video, audio, or bitrate is suitable. |
| Encoding falls behind or the Pi struggles | Whether you are encoding unnecessarily, and whether the installed build and hardware can sustain the chosen settings. | Try stream copy if the input is already compatible. Otherwise lower resolution or frame rate and retest at a sustainable bitrate. |
| Stream drops or health warnings appear over Wi-Fi | Actual upstream capacity and stability from the Pi’s location, plus interference or packet loss. | Repeat a representative test; lower the bitrate or output mode if the connection cannot sustain it. Compare Ethernet if available to help isolate Wi-Fi as the cause. |
| Connection times out | Whether the failed connection is from Pi to camera or from Pi to YouTube. | Test each path independently instead of assuming which link failed. Recheck the current endpoint and the source’s reachability. |
| YouTube receives video but not usable audio | Whether the input actually contains audio and whether FFmpeg is mapping and encoding the intended audio stream. | Provide an audio source if needed, verify stream mapping and format, then check the preview during a test. |
Copyright and YouTube live eligibility
Only stream material you have the rights or permission to use, including music and other audio. A technically healthy FFmpeg feed does not establish that the content complies with YouTube’s rules or that a channel is eligible to go live. Review YouTube’s current live-stream and copyright requirements for your channel and content before an event; this guide does not establish eligibility for a particular account.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream live rather than broadcast a Pi camera, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and playlists on YouTube, not a live camera feed. Start the free day.
