Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To run FFmpeg on an Indian VPS without exhausting its monthly transfer allowance, calculate data use from the stream’s bitrate and hours, confirm the provider’s outbound quota and what happens when it runs out, then configure FFmpeg to send a real-time stream to YouTube over RTMPS. Resolution alone does not determine bandwidth use: at a fixed bitrate, lowering resolution does not reduce transfer.
Plan bandwidth before choosing a stream setting
For a steady video bitrate of B megabits per second, approximate decimal transfer use as:
- Per hour: B × 0.45 GB.
- Per 24-hour day: B × 10.8 GB.
- Per month: B × 0.45 × the number of streaming hours.
This is a bits-to-bytes estimate, not a provider measurement. Add headroom for protocol overhead, audio if it is not included in the bitrate, reconnects, monitoring, software updates and other traffic counted by the VPS provider. Providers may define GB and TB differently and may meter traffic differently, so check the provider’s quota definition.
Examples for continuous streaming
| Video bitrate | Approximate use per day | Approximate use per 30 days | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 Mbps | 32.4 GB | 972 GB | Calculated at a steady bitrate; before headroom and other traffic |
| 5 Mbps | 54 GB | 1,620 GB | Calculated video use; before headroom and other traffic |
The 5 Mbps example matches YouTube’s current recommended H.264 video bitrate for 1080p30, but that recommendation is not a promise of a particular result on every source or network. YouTube’s settings page was accessed in 2026; check the current table before configuring a stream: YouTube live encoder settings.

Work backward from a fixed monthly allowance
Estimate maximum streaming hours as available GB ÷ (B × 0.45), then leave a reserve rather than budgeting to consume the entire quota. For several simultaneous streams, add their bitrates: outbound transfer rises approximately with their combined rate. If your allowance is fixed, choose bitrate and duration together.
Reducing resolution only saves transfer if it also allows you to use a lower bitrate. The bitrate is the direct lever in this calculation.

Distinguish transfer allowance from port speed
A VPS advertised with a fast port may still have a small monthly transfer quota. Conversely, a larger allowance may come with a speed cap after the quota is consumed. Before buying, establish what the plan actually includes:
- Monthly outbound transfer and whether inbound traffic also counts.
- What happens at the limit: throttling, suspension, overage charges or a hard stop.
- Sustained network rate, not just the headline port speed.
- Actual server location and route quality to YouTube’s ingest servers; an India-focused listing does not by itself prove the VPS is physically in India.
- Renewal price, taxes and any fair-use terms attached to “unmetered” traffic.
- CPU and RAM for the chosen encoding method, plus enough disk and operating-system support for the media and FFmpeg build.
Published plan terms show why quota and cap behavior deserve separate checks. VPSWala’s plan catalogue, reviewed 21 August 2026, lists 50 GB transfer for VPS 1 and 100 GB for VPS 2. OVHcloud’s Asia-Pacific VPS listing gives VPS-1 a 500 GB monthly quota and says traffic beyond that is capped at 10 Mbps. These are provider-published terms, not independent route or performance tests; confirm the live plan, region and current conditions before purchasing. VPSWala VPS plans; OVHcloud VPS plans.

Choose YouTube ingest settings that fit both source and quota
YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest with H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It specifies constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, it recommends AAC or MP3 at 128 Kbps; 5.1 audio is supported only with AAC over RTMP/RTMPS. For SDR, its guidance includes square pixels, progressive scan, Rec. 709 and 8-bit video. The same page gives codec-specific bitrate tables, so do not apply an H.264 value indiscriminately to HEVC or AV1.

H.264 reference points
| Resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 360p30 | 4 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 3 Mbps |
| 720p30 or 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 14 Mbps |
These are platform recommendations, not guaranteed quality levels. YouTube’s table also gives separate ranges for other ingest codecs; for example, at 1080p30 it lists 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended for AV1 and H.265, and at 720p30 it lists 2 Mbps minimum and 6 Mbps recommended. Consult the live guidance for your codec, resolution and frame rate rather than treating those examples as universal presets.
If transfer is the binding limit, select a lower bitrate that YouTube accepts for your chosen codec and format, then test the resulting picture. A lower bitrate may reduce detail, especially in fast motion. Use representative footage during testing; a static image is not a useful quality check for a high-motion source.

Prepare the VPS and protect the stream key
- Install FFmpeg from a trusted package or release source. Record the installed version with
ffmpeg -versionand inspect available encoders withffmpeg -encoders. Codec and encoder availability varies by distribution, repository and build. - Identify your input and output needs. Determine whether the source is a single file, playlist or live capture, and whether its codecs, timestamps and container can be sent as-is. Stream copy can reduce CPU use when the source is compatible; it does not make an incompatible source or container suitable automatically.
- Set a transfer budget and encoding target. Pick codec, bitrate, resolution and frame rate using both YouTube’s current settings and the VPS allowance calculation. If transcoding, confirm the VPS can encode in real time; if copying compatible streams, verify playback pacing and timestamps.
- Set CBR behavior and a two-second keyframe interval. As a starting point, two seconds corresponds to 60 frames at 30 fps or 50 frames at 25 fps. Confirm how the selected encoder interprets its GOP and rate-control options.
- Create or retrieve the YouTube stream in Live Control Room. Use the ingest URL and stream key provided there. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection through to Google’s servers. Do not expose the key in a public repository, screenshot, tutorial, shared shell history or logs.
- Run a private or unlisted test and inspect stream health. Test with representative audio and motion, watch YouTube’s stream-health messages, and correct warnings before relying on the VPS for a scheduled or continuous stream.
YouTube’s security guidance recommends RTMPS: encoder settings and security guidance. Stream-key and live-stream workflow information is available in YouTube Live Streaming API: getting started.
Build the FFmpeg command around the source
There is no single safe command for every FFmpeg build, input type and encoder. The following is an illustrative transcode template for one prerecorded file. Replace every placeholder, verify that your build includes libx264, and adjust options for the source and chosen bitrate. It has not been validated on a particular Indian VPS.
ffmpeg -re -i "INPUT_FILE"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v VIDEO_BITRATE
-minrate VIDEO_BITRATE -maxrate VIDEO_BITRATE -bufsize RATE_CONTROL_BUFFER
-g GOP_FRAMES -keyint_min GOP_FRAMES -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://INGEST_HOST/APP/STREAM_KEY"
-repaces a file input in real time so FFmpeg does not upload it faster than playback. Do not assume this is appropriate for every live-capture source.VIDEO_BITRATEis a placeholder for your chosen target, such as3M; the example is not a recommendation for every resolution or source. Matching minimum and maximum rates and setting a buffer is a common way to express a CBR target with x264, but exact behavior depends on the encoder.GOP_FRAMESis the frame count for a two-second keyframe interval at your frame rate: for example, 60 at 30 fps or 50 at 25 fps. Confirm the source frame rate and encoder behavior.RATE_CONTROL_BUFFERis a placeholder, not a fixed value. Select it in line with the encoder’s rate-control guidance and verify the resulting output.- The AAC audio options are illustrative for stereo. Change them if the source, audio layout or chosen YouTube settings require it.
- The RTMPS URL shown is a placeholder. Use the exact ingest address and stream key supplied in Live Control Room; do not paste a real key into a script or log that others can read.
For compatible prerecorded media, stream copy may avoid re-encoding, but the input must be paced for playback and its codecs, timestamps, container and audio must work for the output protocol and YouTube. A playlist needs a playlist-aware workflow, and a live capture has different timing and input options. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for the exact protocol, codec and input options supported by your installed build: FFmpeg command-line documentation and FFmpeg protocol documentation.
Test and monitor before depending on a long run
- Check that the VPS can sustain the chosen bitrate on the route to YouTube, not merely that a speed test reports a high peak.
- Watch YouTube stream-health feedback for bitrate, keyframe, audio and connection warnings.
- Check VPS outbound transfer usage during a representative test and compare the provider’s meter with your estimate.
- Confirm the process behaves correctly after a network interruption or FFmpeg exit; a successful initial connection does not establish automatic recovery.
- Keep a reserve in the quota for reconnects and non-stream traffic, and set provider alerts where available.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Wrong ingest URL or key, unsupported URL format, blocked outbound connection or unavailable encoder | Recheck the Live Control Room values, use RTMPS where supported, inspect FFmpeg’s available encoders and review the VPS firewall or provider network rules. |
| Stream health reports unstable or insufficient bitrate | VPS route or sustained throughput cannot support the configured rate, or competing traffic is consuming capacity | Check sustained outbound performance and provider limits; reduce the target bitrate if appropriate and test again. |
| Monthly transfer is exhausted earlier than expected | Bitrate or streaming hours exceeded the estimate, audio/overhead or other traffic was omitted, or the provider meters differently | Compare actual provider metering with the formula, include all counted traffic, reduce bitrate or scheduled hours, and leave a larger reserve. |
| Picture freezes, has artifacts or fails at a lower resolution | Source quality, encoder load, unsuitable bitrate, timestamps or an overloaded VPS | Inspect CPU use and input timestamps, test representative motion, then adjust encoding settings or use a compatible stream-copy path where suitable. |
| FFmpeg exits and the stream ends | Process failure, file end, network interruption or provider cap/suspension | Inspect FFmpeg output and provider status, check the source and quota, and implement and test process supervision and reconnection behavior appropriate to the VPS. |
