Use FFmpeg’s local progress output to monitor the stream it is encoding, then check YouTube Live Control Room for what the platform is receiving. The two views answer different questions: FFmpeg telemetry is not proof that YouTube received every packet or that viewers saw flawless playback.
What to check—and where
| Check | What it tells you | What it cannot establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg progress and statistics | Local encoding and output progress, including bitrate or frame-related values when the active build and output expose them. | Whether YouTube received the stream cleanly or every viewer played it without issues. |
| YouTube Live Control Room stream health and preview | YouTube’s platform-side health messages and the stream preview. | A universally comparable dropped-frame count matching FFmpeg’s local counters. |
Monitor both during the event. Record timestamps and compare the same time window, stream configuration, and symptoms rather than treating one counter as an end-to-end verdict.
Set a bitrate target before streaming
Choose the intended ingest resolution, frame rate, and video codec first. YouTube’s Help guidance, current when accessed in 2026, recommends the following video bitrates for live ingest; these are recommendations, not measurements or guarantees of what your connection can sustain. YouTube’s live encoder settings can change, so verify the current table when configuring a stream.
| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 | AV1 or H.265/HEVC |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These figures are for video, not the entire connection load. Audio and transport overhead add to the total. YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom above the stream total; shared-network congestion and interruptions can still affect delivery. See YouTube’s encoder settings and network and stream requirements.

Enable FFmpeg’s periodic progress output
Add -progress and -stats_period to your existing FFmpeg command. This is an option pattern, not a complete command: keep your actual input, mapping, encoding, and YouTube output arguments. FFmpeg options normally apply to the next input or output, so place these options before the output they are intended to monitor. Check ffmpeg -h full or documentation matching your installed build if option placement or available fields is uncertain.
ffmpeg -stats_period 1 -progress pipe:1 [your input and encoding options] [your YouTube output options]
- Use a progress destination.
pipe:1sends the program-friendly key/value progress to standard output. If a wrapper reads stdout, make sure it can parse progress blocks and route other logs appropriately. - Choose an update interval.
-stats_period 1requests updates at a one-second interval. FFmpeg’s documented ordinary-statsdisplay has a default update period of 0.5 seconds;-stats_periodcontrols progress update timing. - Start the stream and inspect successive updates. Progress blocks end with
progress=continuewhile processing continues andprogress=endat the end. - Log timestamps. A time series helps distinguish a temporary fluctuation from sustained bitrate or encoding-speed trouble.
FFmpeg describes -progress as writing key/value progress periodically and at the end of the encoding process. Its documentation is regenerated nightly, while deployed builds can be older, so the exact fields available can vary by version and output path. See the FFmpeg documentation.

Read bitrate and frame values carefully
Bitrate is local telemetry
Inspect the fields emitted by your active build rather than assuming every FFmpeg command reports the same values. FFmpeg’s documented -vstats format defines br and avg_br in Kbit/s, alongside frame count and output stream identifiers. Those definitions describe that statistics format; they do not guarantee that every progress block has identically named fields or meanings. Confirm the output for your FFmpeg version and encoding path.
Compare the measured video rate with the target for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. Do not treat the video bitrate as the full network load: audio and transport overhead also use bandwidth.

A frame counter is not automatically a network-loss counter
A drop_frames field may appear in progress output, but its presence and meaning depend on the build and output path. Frame-rate synchronization can itself duplicate or drop frames: cfr duplicates or drops to reach a requested constant frame rate; vfr can drop frames to avoid duplicate timestamps; and passthrough preserves input timestamps. The separate -frame_drop_threshold option concerns how far behind frames may be before they are dropped. These local behaviors are not a universal measure of Internet packet loss.
Likewise, -r is context-dependent. As an output option for encoded video it can duplicate or drop frames to reach a constant frame rate. With stream copy it signals a frame rate to the muxer; it does not make FFmpeg drop or duplicate frames. Do not use -r as a generic dropped-frame detector. A zero FFmpeg counter does not prove that no frames were lost after packets left the encoder.

Check YouTube’s side of the stream
- Open the stream’s Live Control Room and review stream health messages.
- Inspect the preview alongside FFmpeg’s timestamped output.
- Compare the reported problem and time window with local bitrate, frame-related values, and encoder logs.
- If local encoding appears stable but YouTube reports a connection or bitrate problem, check actual outbound capacity and network reliability.
- If the local output and preview look healthy but viewers report problems, compare reports from different connections and inspect playback-device or client-side conditions.
YouTube says to “monitor the stream health and review messages” during the event. Its stream-health view is separate from FFmpeg’s local telemetry; YouTube does not provide a simple dropped-frame count that is universally comparable to FFmpeg’s local counter. See YouTube’s stream-health guidance, encoder troubleshooting, and live-stream metrics.
Troubleshoot by symptom
FFmpeg bitrate stays below target or encoding falls behind
- Check encoder errors and host CPU load.
- Review the source, codec, preset, resolution, and frame rate; confirm the host can encode them in real time.
- Compare the actual encoded output with the target for the chosen ingest codec and mode.
FFmpeg looks stable, but YouTube reports poor stream health
- Measure outbound bandwidth and account for audio, transport overhead, and other traffic using the connection.
- Look for shared-network congestion or interruptions. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom above the stream total.
- Check that the output configuration matches the stream settings you intended to send.
FFmpeg reports drops or duplicates
- Check input timestamps and cadence, output
-r, and-fps_mode. - Determine whether the count reflects frame-rate synchronization behavior before blaming the network.
- Compare with YouTube’s health messages and preview rather than interpreting the FFmpeg value in isolation.
YouTube preview is healthy, but viewers report playback issues
Ask whether the issue appears across multiple connections and devices. A clean encoder view and preview cannot diagnose every viewer’s playback path.
