I replaced Grammarly for writing I want processed on my own device. With a downloaded local model and cloud features turned off, the text sent to that model can stay on the laptop. That does not mean every part of the setup—or every app on the computer—is offline. Model downloads, update checks, optional cloud tools, and other apps have separate network boundaries.
Why I changed my writing workflow
I wanted a clearer boundary around drafts that did not need to leave my computer for feedback. Grammarly is convenient because it can offer suggestions where I write, but that convenience depends on the product being able to process text while it is active. For sensitive drafts, I wanted to choose a workflow where the model inference happens locally rather than sending text to an online writing service.
This is a privacy-motivated software choice, not a claim that one tool produces better edits. There is no writing-quality benchmark or hands-on comparison behind this account; whether local suggestions meet your needs depends on your own editing tasks and chosen model.
What Grammarly says it does with text
Grammarly says it cannot access text unless you are actively using a Grammarly product that offers its services, such as its browser extension. When active, its algorithms analyze text along with writing behavior, usage data, and other information to provide suggestions and related services. See Grammarly’s Privacy Policy.

Documents saved in Grammarly Editor remain stored until you delete them or the account. Grammarly’s support FAQ also says it may use random samples of aggregated and de-identified user content to improve its product unless you opt out of product improvement/training. For generative AI features, it says inputs may be shared with service providers, but those providers are not allowed to train on user content. Grammarly also says it does not sell user content. Those are the company’s descriptions of its own practices, not an independent audit. Details are in Grammarly’s data-use FAQ.
What changes when a model runs locally
A local model runner changes where inference happens: instead of sending a prompt to a hosted model, the downloaded model processes it on the device. The distinction matters, because an app can include both local and cloud-based features.

LM Studio
LM Studio’s Desktop App Privacy Policy, effective June 2026, says messages, chat histories, and documents processed with downloaded local models are not transmitted from the system. The policy separately identifies model searches and downloads, and app update checks, as network-connected activities. Cloud models and web search are optional cloud services that receive requests when used. LM Studio says its app “can run entirely on-device and offline”; that describes a possible local workflow, not a guarantee that every app feature or computer network activity is offline. See the LM Studio Desktop App Privacy Policy.
Ollama
Ollama’s Privacy Policy, last updated March 2026, says prompts, responses, interactions, and content processed locally are not collected, stored, transmitted, or accessible to Ollama. It says it may collect limited device and usage metadata that excludes prompt and response content; model download metadata is one example. Cloud-hosted model use is separate: prompts and responses are processed transiently for that service. The policy’s phrase “Your data stays on your machine” applies to locally processed content, not every cloud feature or network function. See the Ollama Privacy Policy.

What “none of my writing leaves my laptop” means in practice
The claim is accurate only when it refers to text processed by a local model under a local-only workflow. It is not a blanket promise that no writing can leave the computer. The software policies describe different boundaries for local inference, setup traffic, updates, and optional cloud functions; they do not certify the rest of your laptop or its apps.
- Choose a downloaded local model. Confirm the app is using the model installed on your device, rather than a cloud-hosted model.
- Keep sensitive text out of cloud features. Do not send it to cloud models or web-search features offered by a model runner.
- Review the software that can see your writing. Browser extensions, editor integrations, and other apps may process text independently of your local model.
- Separate setup from writing. Downloading models, searching for them, and checking for app updates can involve network requests. Those events are not the same as sending your draft for local inference.
- Check the workflow after changes. A new integration, selected model, or enabled cloud feature can change where text is processed.
This checklist follows the vendors’ stated product boundaries; it is workflow guidance, not a security certification or verification of a particular computer’s network traffic.
