Whether it can mix portrait and landscape clips—and whether it crops, pads, resizes, or preserves them—depends on the service. Check its documentation or test a short mixed-format playlist before relying on a long broadcast.
Two different stages determine what viewers see
YouTube adapts the playback window
YouTube says its player automatically adapts to the size of each individual video. The standard computer player is 16:9, but that does not mean every video must be 16:9. Some formats, including 9:16 vertical video in a computer browser, may appear with padding around the image. A 24/7 service assembles the live feed
That player behavior does not establish how a streaming service handles clips of different dimensions before they reach YouTube. The service may have its own rules for input files and output format. Check whether it preserves each clip, resizes it, crops it, adds padding, or changes output dimensions between clips. These details are especially important when a playlist combines 16:9 landscape and 9:16 portrait video.
What YouTube Live’s vertical option does—and does not do
YouTube documents a Live Control Room option for simultaneous horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 live formats. Its default vertical output is a center crop of the horizontal stream. That is a live dual-format feature; it does not explain how an automated service will combine separately encoded portrait and landscape clips in one 24/7 playlist. What OneStream Live documents for 24/7 streams
OneStream Live’s published 24/7 instructions describe a YouTube-only workflow for Enterprise users: select prerecorded videos from a device, OneStream storage, or cloud storage, then schedule a 24/7 stream. The documented maximum duration is 30 days. The instructions do not specify whether a mixed-ratio playlist is cropped, padded, resized, or passed through unchanged. Its video-settings guidance recommends landscape sources at 1920×1080 (16:9) and portrait sources at 1080×1920 (9:16), and advises uploading videos in their original orientation to avoid cropping or distortion. Those are source-video recommendations, not a stated guarantee about transitions between orientations in one continuous stream. How to check whether a mixed-format playlist will work
- Ask about mixed inputs. Confirm that the service accepts portrait and landscape files in the same 24/7 playlist.
- Ask what happens to each clip. Find out whether the service preserves the frame, scales it, crops it, or adds padding. Also ask whether the outgoing dimensions remain constant or change at clip boundaries.
- Confirm the intended live format. Decide whether your YouTube broadcast should be horizontal, vertical, or use a documented dual-format option. Do not assume that YouTube’s dual-format live feature automatically normalizes prerecorded clips.
- Test a short playlist. Include representative portrait and landscape clips, then inspect the YouTube live output—especially the start and end of each clip—for unexpected cropping, black bars, stretching, or abrupt dimension changes.
- Schedule the long run only after checking the result. If the test does not look right, ask the provider for a supported workflow or prepare compatible source files before scheduling.

Why a 24/7 broadcast is not proof of automatic aspect-ratio conversion
YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes a continuously active 24/7 broadcast alongside a separate interview broadcast using the same incoming stream.
