No. The YouTube app does not browse or play video files stored on a USB or external drive. To watch your own files, use your TV’s separate USB or media-player feature, or a compatible media player. Uploading a video to YouTube is a different process from playing it directly off a drive.
YouTube and YouTube TV are different
“YouTube streaming service” can refer to the standard YouTube app or to YouTube TV, a separate paid live-television service. Neither makes an attached external drive a source of local files inside the ordinary YouTube app.
YouTube’s Terms of Service say, “You may view or listen to Content for your personal, non-commercial use.” YouTube TV programming is subject to separate terms: subscribers should not copy or transfer programs to an external drive. Use YouTube TV’s own recording features where available, rather than trying to store its programming outside the service.
How to play your own videos from an external drive
- Check the exact device manual. Look for USB storage support, supported file systems, drive capacity and power limits, and supported video and audio codecs. Support varies by model; a file extension or format listed as supported does not guarantee every file will play.
- Connect the drive to a USB port on the TV or player. Open the device’s USB input or media-player app and browse to the file. For example, Sony documents a path of Apps > Media Player > USB device > file on supported devices; menus differ by model.
- If the TV cannot play the files, check compatible media players. Some Roku devices support local USB playback, and certain Philips Android TV models can play USB files through an installed media-player app. Confirm that the particular model supports your drive and formats before buying.
- Use casting only for YouTube content. Casting YouTube from a phone or tablet to a compatible TV sends YouTube content to the TV; it does not give the YouTube app a browser for files on your external drive.
What to check when a file will not play
- Drive is not detected: Check the manual for supported file systems, capacity, and power requirements. A drive that exceeds the device’s limits may not appear.
- Drive appears but the video does not: Check the file’s video and audio codecs, not just its filename extension. Manufacturer support can vary by model, and listed formats may still have exceptions.
- No USB or local media option: Verify the exact TV model’s documentation, then consider a media player with documented local USB playback.
Compatibility cannot be determined without the TV or player model, drive properties, and file format. Check the manufacturer’s current documentation for that exact combination.

Uploading your own videos to YouTube is a separate option
If the videos are yours, you can upload them to your YouTube channel subject to YouTube’s terms and any third-party rights. YouTube also provides a way to download MP4 copies of videos you uploaded. Uploading or downloading does not mean the YouTube app can play a file directly from a connected drive.
