To change what viewers see on a YouTube 24/7 stream, edit the scheduled or active broadcast in YouTube Studio—not the reusable encoder stream or stream key. You can change the broadcast title, and YouTube’s API documentation says broadcast video metadata can be updated at any time. For thumbnails, use the customization controls available for the specific event, save, and verify the public watch page; YouTube does not document one universal live-thumbnail click path or promise an exact refresh time.
What “rotation” means on a 24/7 stream
YouTube does not treat the encoder feed and the viewer-facing broadcast as the same thing. The liveStream resource is the ingest feed sent by your encoder or streaming service; the liveBroadcast represents the YouTube video viewers watch and carries its public metadata, including title and thumbnail. A broadcast is associated with one liveStream, and the same reusable stream can be used for broadcasts over time. See Google’s Life of a Broadcast documentation.
So, changing a stream key, encoder label, or ingest-stream title is not how you change the public title. Edit the intended broadcast’s details instead. If by “rotate” you mean automatically cycle through multiple titles or thumbnails on a timer, the cited YouTube documentation establishes how to edit broadcast metadata, not an automatic rotation feature. Update the event manually when needed or use a workflow that explicitly supports scheduled metadata changes.
Change the title and thumbnail in YouTube Studio
1. Open the correct scheduled or active broadcast
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live area or Live Control Room.
- Choose the intended current or upcoming event. YouTube’s Live production guidance describes the Studio Live tab as showing current, upcoming, and past streams.
- Check the event carefully if the channel has several broadcasts or reuses a persistent stream key. The public metadata belongs to the broadcast you select.
2. Edit the broadcast details
For encoder and mobile streams, YouTube Help says you can choose metadata when creating or scheduling a stream, or change it using Edit from the stream settings page. Open the selected event’s settings, update its title, and save. The exact controls shown can vary with the event’s state and the Studio interface; follow the controls presented for that broadcast. For API-managed channels, Google says the broadcast’s title and other metadata fields in its video resource can be updated at any time. This applies to broadcast metadata, not to changing the incoming video feed.
3. Set or replace the thumbnail
For a scheduled event, use the event’s thumbnail or customization control to upload the image, then save. Google’s production guidance confirms custom thumbnails can be added to scheduled streams. For an event that is already live, open that broadcast’s details and use the thumbnail or customization controls actually available there. YouTube Help does not specify one thumbnail-specific sequence that applies to every active-stream interface, so do not assume every account or event will show identical labels.

4. Verify the public result
After saving, inspect the broadcast’s public watch page to confirm the title and thumbnail shown there. YouTube’s documentation does not promise a particular thumbnail propagation delay, and different viewer surfaces may not update simultaneously. If the intended change is missing, confirm you edited the right broadcast and that the change was saved before trying again.
Why scheduled events deserve attention before going live
A scheduled stream can appear as upcoming in subscriber feeds, where viewers may choose Notify me. Set the title and thumbnail on the scheduled event before it starts when possible, so its planned presentation is accurate before viewers encounter it. YouTube’s tag guidance also cautions against treating tags as a substitute for accurate metadata: tags generally play a minimal role in discovery, except that they can help with commonly misspelled content. Rotating tags is not the main way to refresh a stream’s viewer-facing presentation.
Keep the video feed running while you edit metadata
Title and thumbnail changes apply to the broadcast’s metadata. In YouTube’s documented API model, editing that metadata does not require creating a new liveStream. Avoid changing or resetting the encoder connection just to rename the public broadcast. YouTube distinguishes encoder transmission from the broadcast’s video metadata in its broadcast lifecycle documentation.

Do not confuse YouTube’s archive guidance with a requirement to stop an ongoing 24/7 stream: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but that statement does not say a continuing broadcast must stop at 12 hours. The API reference says a broadcast without a scheduled end time is treated as continuing indefinitely; that describes the scheduling field, not a guarantee of uninterrupted uptime. - The public title did not change: You may have edited the reusable ingest stream instead of the broadcast, or selected a different event. Return to Studio’s Live area and edit the viewer-facing broadcast’s details.
- The thumbnail control is missing: Thumbnail controls can vary by event state and interface. Confirm you opened the intended broadcast and use the customization options exposed for that event. YouTube’s published guidance does not establish one universal live-event thumbnail path.
- The watch page still shows the previous thumbnail: Confirm the edit was saved and recheck the public page. No official source cited here establishes an exact refresh delay, so avoid assuming either instant propagation or a fixed wait time.
- The stream disconnected during an edit: Metadata editing is separate from the ingest feed. Check the encoder or streaming service connection independently rather than changing the stream key as a title-editing fix.
- The stream is scheduled but viewers see outdated information: Edit the scheduled broadcast before it begins where possible; upcoming events may already be visible to subscribers and offer notifications.
