How to Switch Between Prerecorded Videos Without Interrupting a YouTube Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep OBS connected to YouTube and change the video inside OBS. Add each recording as a Media Source, or use a VLC Video source for an ordered playlist; switch scenes when you want a different segment. You do not need to end and restart the YouTube stream for a content change. A scene switch keeps the encoder session active, but it cannot guarantee a flawless, gap-free picture or audio on every computer and file, so rehearse the exact transitions before going live.

How the switch works

YouTube receives one encoder feed, identified by a stream URL and stream key. OBS sends that feed; its scenes determine which content appears in the output. Changing the active OBS scene changes the content without requiring a new YouTube stream session. Keep the stream key private: it is the credential OBS uses to send your broadcast to the channel.

“Without interrupting” means keeping the encoder session live while changing what it sends. A source may still show a blank frame, freeze briefly, reload, or produce an audio gap. File decoding, source visibility settings, audio routing, and computer performance all affect the result. OBS and YouTube documentation do not promise a frame-perfect transition for every setup.

Choose how to organize the videos

Approach Best for What to know
Media Source in separate scenes Individual files and manually controlled segments OBS’s built-in Media Source plays local files. Configure whether playback restarts when the source becomes active, loops, or hides when playback ends. If “Close file when inactive” is enabled, OBS warns that reopening the source can cause a short delay.
VLC Video source An ordered playlist, with optional looping or shuffle Add the files to the source playlist and rehearse its end-of-file and next-item behavior. VLC must be installed; OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

OBS documents support for common local video formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM. Exact playback depends on your files and system, so verify the formats you intend to use rather than assuming every file will behave identically.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set up OBS and YouTube

  1. Prepare the YouTube encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and set up an encoder stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
  2. Connect OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter or select the stream details using the current OBS connection options. If YouTube provides a stream URL and key for manual setup, use those values in the corresponding OBS fields. Keep the key private and do not share it in screenshots or recordings.
  3. Add your recordings. In the OBS scene where a video should play, select Sources > + > Media Source, give it a clear name, and browse to the file. Set restart-on-activation if each appearance should begin at the start. Decide whether it should loop or hide after ending. If you enable Close file when inactive, account for the possible reload delay when the scene returns.
  4. Build a playlist if needed. To play an ordered set of files, add a VLC Video source, add the files to its playlist, and configure its loop or shuffle behavior deliberately. Confirm VLC’s architecture matches OBS before relying on the source.
  5. Create and name scenes. Put each manually controlled video in its own scene, or create a holding scene with the next source ready. Name scenes after the program segment so you can identify the right destination under pressure.
  6. Choose a transition and control method. Use OBS’s scene transition controls or assign scene-switch hotkeys. Select the transition style and duration you want, then test it with the actual files; OBS supports scene transitions and hotkeys, but neither ensures every transition is artifact-free.
  7. Test before the event. Start a private or otherwise appropriate test stream, preview it in Live Control Room, and check movement, audio, scene changes, and stream health. Use the same computer, files, settings, and transition timing planned for the broadcast.
  8. Switch while live. Keep OBS streaming and select the next scene when the program calls for it. For an automatic playlist, allow the VLC source to advance and confirm the sequence behaves as rehearsed.
  9. End in the right order. When the event is over, end it in Live Control Room and stop the encoder feed as YouTube directs. A scene change is not the same thing as ending the YouTube event. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; consult its current guidance for streams at or beyond that duration.

Rehearse for clean transitions

  • Use representative files, especially the ones with the most motion or complex audio. Check that each file opens, plays, and reaches its intended end state.
  • Test every scene change, including the first appearance of a source and a return to a source that was hidden. A source configured to close while inactive may reload with a short delay.
  • Listen for silence, overlap, or an unexpected change in audio when moving between scenes. Audio behavior depends on how the sources and scenes are configured; test the mix you plan to send rather than relying on one universal setting.
  • Preview in Live Control Room and monitor stream health during the event. YouTube recommends testing and ongoing monitoring.
  • Tell viewers who use DVR that they may be watching behind the live edge. A viewer who paused or rewound may not see a newly switched segment immediately; that alone does not mean the encoder stopped.

Troubleshooting scene switches

The picture goes black or freezes briefly

Check whether the source is being reloaded when it becomes active, whether decoding has caught up, and whether the intended source is active in the selected scene. OBS notes that closing an inactive file can cause a short delay when it is shown again. Reproduce the transition in a test using the live computer, file, settings, and timing.

The new video does not appear

Confirm that the correct scene is selected, the source is present and visible in that scene, and the file path still points to an accessible file. If you use VLC Video, verify that VLC is installed with the architecture required by your OBS installation and that the playlist contains the intended files.

Audio vanishes or overlaps

Check the audio behavior of the sources and scenes, then test the transition while monitoring the stream. YouTube recommends testing audio and movement similar to the actual event; there is no single audio-mixing configuration established for every scene design.

A viewer says the switch has not happened

Ask whether the viewer is paused or rewound. YouTube DVR lets viewers watch behind the live edge, so they may not see the current segment until they return to live playback.

The stream ends when you only meant to change videos

Switch the active scene in OBS, not the YouTube event controls. Keep the encoder session connected for content changes; end the event in Live Control Room only when the broadcast is finished.
