Read the categories as attribution labels—not proof of why a viewer arrived—and compare the same date ranges alongside impressions, click-through rate, views and average view duration.
Where to find live-stream traffic sources
- In YouTube Studio, open Analytics.
- Select the Content tab and apply the Live filter.
- Open How viewers find your live streams. Confirm the selected content and date range before recording or comparing results.
- Review the source categories and, where available, open the relevant traffic-source card to see detail such as search terms, suggested videos, playlists or external sites.
YouTube describes this report as showing how viewers found live streams through Browse features, YouTube Search, Suggested videos, Direct or unknown, Channel pages and other sources. The exact rows shown can vary with the content and report context. YouTube Help: Understand your YouTube content performance
What each traffic-source label means
| Source | What YouTube groups under it | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Browse features | Home, subscriptions, Watch Later, Trending/Explore and other browsing features. | A rise means more views were attributed to YouTube browsing surfaces. The category alone does not say which surface caused the change. |
| YouTube Search | Views from YouTube Search results. | When the card provides search terms, treat them as evidence of queries that found the content—not proof that every viewer searched in the same way. |
| Suggested videos | Recommendations next to or after other videos, and links in video descriptions. | Inspect the specific videos listed when YouTube provides them; a total alone does not identify which recommendation placement mattered. |
| Playlists | Any playlist containing one of the channel’s videos, including another creator’s playlist and users’ Liked videos or Favorites. | Check available playlist detail before attributing a change to a playlist you manage. |
| Channel pages | The creator’s channel page or other YouTube channels. | This identifies channel-page attribution, not necessarily which channel sent the viewer unless further detail is available. |
| External | Websites and apps that embed or link to the video. | Use the External card’s available sites and sources to identify referrals. This is distinct from Direct or unknown. |
| Direct or unknown | Direct URL entry, bookmarks, signed-out viewers and unidentified apps. | This combines known direct-access patterns with traffic YouTube cannot identify. Do not relabel the whole category as external referrals. |
| Notifications | Notifications and emails to subscribers, including notifications to subscribers with all notifications enabled and other app notifications. | Use the label as YouTube’s grouped notification attribution; it does not by itself show how recipients responded. |
| Other categories | May include Shorts, End screens, Video cards, YouTube advertising, Product pages and Other YouTube features. | Rows depend on content and report context; not every stream will show every category. |
Definitions are from YouTube Help’s traffic-source descriptions.
How to interpret source changes on a continuous stream
Start with the selected period: a source share describes attributed traffic in that date range, not a causal explanation for audience growth. Note changes in stream packaging, playlist placement, channel promotion, external embeds or relevant YouTube discovery surfaces as context, then look for patterns across equivalent periods rather than drawing a conclusion from one count. YouTube’s Live analytics guidance recommends reviewing top sources, search terms and patterns among more popular live streams. YouTube Help: Content tab analytics tips – Live

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Pair source mix with other metrics to understand what happened around discovery:
- Impressions and impressions click-through rate: impressions are thumbnail displays on YouTube, not external websites or apps. CTR indicates how often people watched after seeing the thumbnail. Together, they add context about YouTube exposure and response; they do not explain every source.
- Views: compare the view contribution for each source over the same period.
- Average view duration: use it as viewing-depth context alongside discovery, not as evidence that a particular source caused longer viewing.
- Format and period: compare streams with streams and use equivalent date windows where practical. YouTube cautions that viewer behavior differs between formats, so a live stream and a different format are not automatically like-for-like.
For a practical record, note the date range, leading source categories, available drill-down details and the metrics above. Separately record operational context—such as a promotion or playlist change—rather than implying that Analytics identifies the reason for a change.

Limits specific to reading 24/7 stream data
YouTube’s cited guidance documents traffic sources for live streams, but does not specify a special attribution window or interpretation method for a continuously running 24/7 broadcast. It also does not establish how a stream restart affects attribution or prescribe an ideal evaluation interval. Use consistent date ranges and label any restart or operational segment from your own records; do not present that workflow as a YouTube Analytics feature.
Some Analytics data, including traffic-source detail, may be limited. YouTube’s help documentation gives no universal numeric cutoff for when source details are suppressed, so missing or sparse detail should be reported plainly rather than treated as zero or assigned an assumed threshold. The visible Studio controls can also differ: YouTube says an updated Analytics experience began rolling out gradually in July 2026. YouTube Help: Get started with YouTube Analytics

Live Control Room numbers and Analytics are not interchangeable. YouTube says Analytics uses processed and despammed data tied to the video ID, while Live Control Room measurements are measured differently. Video-level metrics become available within minutes after a stream ends, according to YouTube’s live-metrics documentation; that timing is not a promise that every report detail will appear immediately.
