Before setting it up, decide whether the station will play prerecorded programmes, feature a live host, or combine both: that choice changes the equipment and operating plan, but it does not change the need to clear the music you use.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible to stream live. YouTube’s current guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch. (YouTube Help, “Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder”)
- A continuous programme source. For a music-only station, this may be a playlist of prerecorded radio programmes or music with a visual slate. A host-led station needs a microphone and suitable audio input; interviews may also call for a mixer or additional microphones. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes microphones as typical external audio hardware, not a requirement for music-only playback. (YouTube Help, “Streaming tips”)
- An encoder and a way to keep it running. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders. A computer running an encoder is a straightforward DIY option, but it depends on local power, internet and a working playback source.
- Stable upload internet and monitoring. The stream can fail if the connection, encoder, source playback or power fails. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and planning for reliable connectivity and recovery. (YouTube Help, “Streaming tips”)
- Written music permissions for the intended use. A song’s recording and its underlying composition and lyrics may involve different rights. A terrestrial radio permission should not be assumed to cover a YouTube internet stream.
The technical setup is not specific to Kerala; the rights questions below are specific to using music in India. The available guidance does not establish which permissions cover a particular station or catalogue.
Clear the music before you go live
Do not treat a song as cleared simply because it is available online, the station is not monetized, or you already have permission to play it on terrestrial radio. YouTube’s live-stream terms say the operator must have “all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world,” including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants. In India, IPRS describes licensing for musical and literary works in its repertoire, while noting that sound-recording rights can be administered separately by organizations such as PPL, Novex or RMPL. PPL India describes a licence for its sound recordings on terrestrial FM and community radio; that description does not establish clearance for a YouTube internet stream. Check the actual rights holders and obtain written terms for the recordings and works you plan to use. - List each intended recording and identify who controls the sound recording and the underlying composition and lyrics.
- Ask whether the permission explicitly covers online YouTube livestreaming, the territories in which viewers can watch, monetization, and any recording or archive.
- Ask how YouTube Content ID claims should be handled and whether the rights holder will allowlist your channel where needed.
- Keep the written permissions and any restrictions together with your programme records.
YouTube says live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material in another live broadcast. A match can interrupt or terminate a stream, and an archive may receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast. (YouTube Help, “Copyright issues with live streams”) The platform’s automated checks are not a substitute for permission.
How to stream radio live on YouTube 24/7
- Enable live streaming in advance. In YouTube Studio, verify the channel and enable live streaming. Check that the channel has no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. If this is the channel’s first live stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation. (YouTube Help, “Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder”)
- Prepare the programme source. Set up the playlist or playback system so it can continue through the full intended broadcast. For a music-only stream, use an appropriate visual such as station artwork rather than assuming audio alone is the complete encoder output. For live hosting, connect and test the microphone and other audio inputs. Make sure the material is cleared for the planned use before adding it to the running playlist.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Choose the stream workflow that lets your encoder send the programme to YouTube. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders; the exact controls depend on the encoder you choose. (YouTube Help, “Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder”)
- Connect the encoder securely. Copy the stream URL and stream key from the Live Control Room into the encoder’s streaming settings. Use RTMPS if the encoder supports it. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send content to your channel. Do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or leave it in a shared workspace. - Choose settings your network can sustain. YouTube’s encoder specifications recommend RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, constant-bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; the recommended interval should not exceed four seconds. Use settings the encoder supports and your actual connection can maintain rather than selecting the highest resolution by default. (YouTube Help, “Streaming tips”)
- Check upload capacity at the intended bitrate. YouTube recommends that the streaming bitrate not exceed the available upload bandwidth and that you leave 20% headroom. Test on the network you will use for the broadcast, at the chosen settings. If you plan a backup encoder on the same connection, leave additional capacity for it rather than counting the same bandwidth twice. (YouTube Help, “Streaming tips”)
- Preview and test the whole chain. Start an unlisted or otherwise appropriate test broadcast if available in your workflow. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators, then listen for clean, continuous audio and confirm the visual remains present. Test long enough to expose playlist gaps, playback stopping or encoder instability; a brief connection check cannot prove an unattended overnight setup is dependable.
- Plan for failures and people. Arrange a response for internet loss, power cuts, playback ending, encoder crashes and YouTube disconnects. YouTube recommends testing, reliable connectivity and backup-encoder failover; these are operating measures, not a promise that a stream will never go down. Decide who will check the channel overnight and how they will restart or switch the source. (YouTube Help, “Streaming tips”)
Will YouTube save a 24-hour livestream?
Do not rely on one continuous 24-hour broadcast becoming a complete YouTube archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. If preserving a recording matters, consider using separate sessions that stay below that threshold or making a local recording as well. Confirm the recording is actually available before deleting your own copy. (YouTube Help, “Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder”)

DIY computer setup or cloud playback?
A local encoder gives you direct control over live hosting and your playback chain, but it relies on the computer, power, internet and monitoring at the station. A cloud service can be a better fit when the programme is prerecorded and should continue without a home or studio computer running. Neither arrangement resolves music rights, and neither eliminates the need to check the live output.
