To get audio from BUTT into YouTube Live, capture BUTT’s audio in OBS, add a visual source to the OBS scene, and send OBS to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. BUTT’s manual describes sending microphone or line input to Icecast or SHOUTcast; it does not document YouTube as a direct output destination. The steps below use OBS as the video encoder between BUTT and YouTube.
Why OBS sits between BUTT and YouTube
BUTT is an audio encoder for sending live microphone or line input to an Icecast or SHOUTcast server. Its manual says it is not a server itself and is not intended to automatically stream a set of audio files. YouTube’s encoder workflow instead uses a YouTube server URL and stream key entered in a compatible encoder. The documented route is therefore to bring BUTT’s audio into OBS, then let OBS create and send the YouTube video stream.
This is not a claim that no third-party bridge or plugin could ever exist; the cited official workflows do not establish native YouTube output from BUTT.
What you need before setup
- BUTT configured to produce the live audio you want to broadcast.
- OBS installed on the computer running BUTT.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- A visual element for the broadcast, such as a still image, text, video, display capture, or camera. This route sends a video stream, even when the program is audio-only.
- A stable internet connection capable of carrying the selected stream settings.
Route BUTT audio into OBS and start the YouTube stream
- Create or select the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the intended stream. Copy its server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or show it in a screen capture.
- Build an OBS scene. Create a scene and add a visual source. For a radio-style broadcast, a cover image with program or station text can provide a simple static picture; a video or camera is optional. OBS’s Quick Start Guide documents adding image and other scene sources.
- Choose how OBS will capture BUTT’s audio. The right source depends on your OS and how BUTT exposes its output. On Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11, OBS documents per-application audio capture; if that does not capture BUTT, route BUTT’s output to a virtual audio device and select that device in OBS. OBS also documents Audio Input/Output Capture on Windows and macOS, and ALSA/PulseAudio sources on Linux. Do not assume identical menus or routing behavior across operating systems.
- Check the audio path. Start audio in BUTT and watch the OBS audio meters. If they do not move, verify BUTT’s selected output device, the device or application selected in OBS, and your operating system’s audio routing. OBS’s Quick Start guidance recommends checking the meters and manually selecting devices when needed.
- Set OBS’s YouTube destination. In OBS streaming settings, select YouTube if that option is available, or enter the server URL and stream key copied from Live Control Room. Start streaming from OBS. For a scheduled YouTube stream, wait for its preview to appear in Live Control Room, then click Go live there.
- Test before a public broadcast. Use a private, unlisted, or otherwise suitable test stream. Confirm that the picture appears, BUTT audio is audible, OBS meters move, and YouTube reports acceptable stream health. Avoid capturing the same device both globally and again as a scene source unless you intend to; duplicate capture can produce echo.
Choose an audio capture route for your operating system
| Route | When it can help | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Application audio capture | When OBS can isolate BUTT directly, this can avoid capturing unrelated computer audio. | OBS documents per-application capture for Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11. OBS notes some applications may not work with this path. |
| Virtual audio device | When direct capture is unavailable or fails, direct BUTT’s output to a virtual device and capture that device in OBS. | OBS describes this as an alternate routing approach, including Windows-specific steps. Device setup and labels vary by operating system and software. |
| Audio input/output capture | When BUTT’s audio is available through a system input or output device that OBS can select. | OBS lists Audio Input/Output Capture on Windows and macOS; Linux uses ALSA/PulseAudio sources. Avoid capturing the same device twice if that creates echo. |
Compare methods by whether the intended BUTT output is visible to OBS, whether unrelated sounds are included, and whether the meters move consistently. No route is established as universally best.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OBS and YouTube stream settings to verify
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing first and monitoring stream health. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 for video; AAC or MP3 for audio; constant bitrate (CBR); a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum; and RTMPS when the encoder supports it. These are YouTube platform recommendations, not evidence that BUTT itself produces a YouTube-compatible video stream.
Use settings your computer and upload connection can sustain. There is no single resolution or bitrate that fits every connection and system. Confirm the current recommendations in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and OBS’s available output controls before going live.

Troubleshoot common routing problems
- OBS meters do not move: Confirm BUTT is producing audio, check its output device, then verify that OBS is capturing the matching application or device. If application capture does not work, try the virtual-device route.
- YouTube preview has video but no sound: Check that the OBS source capturing BUTT is active and its meter responds. Check the selected stream audio track and test playback in YouTube’s preview.
- Echo or doubled sound: Look for the same device captured both globally and as a scene source. Disable the duplicate path unless it is intentional, then test again.
- OBS has sound but YouTube does not receive a healthy stream: Verify the server URL and stream key for the selected YouTube stream, confirm OBS is actively streaming, and review YouTube’s stream-health status. A key copied for a different stream will not configure the intended destination.
- Audio capture behaves differently after an OS or app change: Recheck the current OBS capture options and operating-system routing. Application-audio capture support and menu labels are not identical across Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Copyright and broadcast checks
Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights needed for the music, recordings, spoken material, and visuals in the program. A technically healthy stream can still face YouTube copyright enforcement. Also consider YouTube’s reused-content rules if you plan to monetize a channel: permission to use material and eligibility for monetization are separate questions. Review YouTube’s current policies for your content and circumstances rather than assuming that routing audio through OBS changes those obligations.

If the goal is a continuous YouTube channel rather than routing a live BUTT audio feed, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not live microphone or line input from BUTT.
