Made-for-kids settings change the live experience
If the stories are made for kids, YouTube restricts features on the designated live stream. Its live-stream guidance says live chat and live chat replay, comments on archives and upcoming streams, Super Chat, and reminders are disabled or restricted; personalized ads are disabled, though contextual ads may appear. Set up the channel before scheduling stories
- Check live-stream eligibility in YouTube Studio. Confirm the channel can go live and review current YouTube policy requirements. YouTube warns that copyright and policy issues can suspend live-stream access. See YouTube’s live-stream policy guidance.
- Set the audience correctly. Decide whether the stories are made for kids based on the content, then apply the appropriate audience setting to the stream. Do not leave this to the playout vendor.
- Clear rights for every item. Use stories, music, illustrations, and other media you have the right to stream. A playout service does not grant content rights or prevent copyright claims.
- Prepare and test the rundown. Confirm file formats, order, audio levels, captions, and the intended repeat behavior. Test a short run and verify the actual YouTube output before relying on it continuously.
- Test interruption recovery. Ask the service how it detects a dropped YouTube connection, reconnects, and reports a failure. Confirm the behavior with a test stream rather than assuming “always on” describes every outage case.
- Review the archive and schedule. Check what YouTube records, what remains available as an archive, and how scheduled or repeated content appears to viewers. Keep an operator responsible for reviewing the channel and responding to policy or content issues.

Common problems and what to do
- The service cannot connect to YouTube: recheck the stream key in YouTube Studio and in the playout service, and confirm that the chosen service supports the required YouTube output path. If using Castr, do not treat generic social distribution as proof of a direct YouTube connector.
- The stream ends when a computer shuts down: playback may still be running locally rather than in a cloud service. Check where the playout process actually runs and whether any relay or local encoder is required.
- A playlist will not loop or schedule as expected: check the selected plan’s loop and scheduling eligibility, file limits, and whether the channel is configured for schedule or loop mode. Castr says loop mode begins on Premium and higher, and its limits vary by plan.
- Output settings are wrong: verify the selected resolution, frame rate, and audio settings before creating a playout channel. Castr says output configuration is fixed at channel creation, so confirm the target configuration first.
- YouTube restricts or interrupts the stream: inspect YouTube Studio notifications and resolve any policy or copyright issue. Confirm live-stream eligibility and rights to all story and music assets.
- Engagement features are missing: check the audience designation. Made-for-kids streams have restrictions on chat, comments, reminders, and personalized ads under YouTube’s guidance.
- A cloud architecture is more expensive or complex than expected: for AWS, map every component, continuous runtime, monitoring responsibility, and YouTube ingest step before estimating total cost. The architecture documentation does not provide a workload-specific cost comparison.
