How do I stop my YouTube livestream archive from getting too long?
Split continuous radio programming into separate broadcasts that finish comfortably below YouTube’s 12-hour boundary. YouTube Help’s page “Archive live streams” says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” The page does not prescribe an ideal session length, so choose a schedule that fits your programming and leave room for an unexpected delay.
For example, you could use a daily handoff or another regular schedule that creates discrete replays. The goal is not a particular universal number of hours; it is to end each broadcast before the documented boundary rather than depend on an overlong stream being saved.
How to split a continuous radio broadcast safely
- Choose a session length with a buffer. Plan to end well before 12 hours. If the show runs late, the buffer reduces the chance of crossing YouTube’s archive threshold.
- Prepare the next stream before ending the current one. If uninterrupted programming matters, set up or schedule the next broadcast in advance. YouTube’s encoder workflow supports scheduled streams and reusing prior stream settings; consult Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder for the current workflow.
- Record locally as well as streaming. YouTube Help recommends recording a local archive as a backup. Check that the recording file exists and plays before relying on it for retention. The storage required depends on the recording format and bitrate, so there is no universal drive capacity for a given number of hours.
- End the session, then verify its replay. After the broadcast, look under YouTube Studio > Content > Live and confirm whether the replay is available before changing or deleting it.
Will YouTube save a livestream longer than 12 hours?
Do not count on it. YouTube says a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is a risk to the replay, not a promise that every shorter stream will be saved under every circumstance. A separate local recording gives you another copy if the YouTube archive is unavailable.

How to hide or remove an old YouTube live replay
- Open YouTube Studio.
- Select Content, then the Live tab.
- Find the completed replay and open its editing options.
- Change its visibility if you want to keep the archive in your account but limit who can view it, or delete it if you do not want to retain that replay.
Private and unlisted are visibility choices; deletion removes the replay. Choose based on whether you want a retained channel copy and who should be able to access it. YouTube Help documents visibility and deletion controls in Archive live streams.
What playlists and DVR do—and do not do
Playlists organize; they do not shorten a replay
You can group radio archives and highlight clips into playlists, which helps viewers find programs. A playlist does not change the length or public visibility of an individual replay. YouTube recommends organizing archives and highlights this way in Promote your live stream.

DVR is for live playback, not archive management
DVR lets viewers pause or rewind while a stream is live. YouTube notes that DVR can be limited or unavailable on very long streams. Turning DVR off does not stop a recording from appearing after the stream ends, so use archive visibility controls—not DVR—to manage who can view a completed replay. See Turn on DVR on live streams.

Troubleshooting archive problems
- The replay is missing after a very long broadcast: If the stream exceeded 12 hours, YouTube warns it may not have been captured. Check for a local recording before concluding there is no retained copy.
- The replay exists but is still public: Open YouTube Studio > Content > Live and change its visibility. DVR settings do not control archive visibility.
- A playlist did not make the video shorter or private: Playlists only organize videos. Edit the replay’s visibility or delete it in Studio.
- The local backup is not usable: Confirm the recording file is present and plays after the broadcast. Recording size depends on format and bitrate; check available storage for your own setup rather than assuming a fixed capacity.
