Lower the video quality in the player, choose its data-saving mode if available, and set a persistent preference for the metered network. Then estimate usage by multiplying the service’s per-hour figure by 24 and by the number of days you plan to watch. There is no single resolution or data total that applies to every cartoon livestream: the platform, stream encoding, and playback settings all matter.
Start with the player’s quality and data settings
On a metered connection, the most direct documented way to reduce video data use is to select a lower quality or a data-saving mode. This usually makes the picture less sharp. Automatic quality can rise when the connection allows it, so a fixed lower option may be more predictable when conserving data matters most.
YouTube
- While a video is playing, open Settings in the player, choose Quality, then select Data saver or a lower resolution. YouTube describes Data saver as “Lower picture quality, but videos may start faster.” YouTube Help: Change the quality of your video.
- To set a default, open your profile picture → Settings → Video quality preferences. Set the preference for Mobile networks separately from Wi-Fi, choosing a lower-quality option for the metered network.
- If the video offers Advanced quality controls, you can choose a resolution there; that option is not available for every video.
YouTube says Higher picture quality uses more data and may take longer to start or buffer more often. The available quality choices depend on the video and device, so check the player rather than assuming a particular resolution is available.
Netflix
- In a browser, open Account → Profiles → choose a profile → Playback settings, then select a lower data-use setting.
- In the mobile app, open My Netflix → tap the profile name → App Settings → Video Playback → Cellular Data Usage. Choose Save Data to reduce cellular use or Wi-Fi Only to prevent playback over cellular data.

Estimate what 24/7 playback could consume
Use a per-hour estimate from the service when one is available. Multiply it by 24 for a full day, then multiply by the number of days in your billing period. Treat the result as a planning estimate, not a guaranteed amount for a particular livestream.
Netflix’s published estimates
Netflix Help Center lists the following maximum rates per device, per hour. The 24-hour column is the arithmetic result of multiplying each listed hourly rate by 24; it is not a separate Netflix measurement.

For Netflix mobile playback, the same Help Center page estimates about 4 hours per GB on Automatic and about 6 hours per GB on Save Data; Maximum Data can use 1 GB per 20 minutes or more. Use bitrate for a separate planning calculation
If you know the stream’s sustained bitrate, a useful decimal-unit conversion is approximately 10.8 GB per day and 324 GB per 30 days for every sustained 1 Mbps. This comes from bitrate × time ÷ 8, converted to decimal gigabytes; it is arithmetic, not a measured result for your stream. Add a safety margin because actual bitrate, network overhead, selected quality, and player behavior vary.

Choose a quality that fits the cap and viewing screen
Compare the options against four practical factors: expected data use, clarity at the screen’s actual size, buffering on your connection, and whether the setting persists on the metered network. A lower resolution can be an effective trade-off if the cartoon remains comfortable to watch on your device.
- YouTube identifies 360p and 480p as typical standard definition, and 720p and 1080p as HD. Its UHD range is 2160–3840 vertical lines; YouTube says UHD needs a consistent download speed of at least 15 Mbps and uses much more data than HD or SD. YouTube Help: System requirements.
- Netflix recommends stable connections of 3 Mbps or higher for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 15 Mbps for 4K. These are connection-speed recommendations for picture quality, not data-per-hour guarantees. Netflix: Internet connection speed recommendations.
A New Zealand Commerce Commission report published October 27, 2022, described Netflix encoding behavior after a 2021 change: programs with fewer colors and less movement, “like a cartoon,” were encoded at a lower bitrate than fast-paced action films. It also said a 4K stream previously encoded at 15.6 Mbps would, under the described change, be transmitted at no more than 12 Mbps as a worst case. This is a dated, Netflix-specific account—not a current universal rate or a promise of a particular saving for your cartoon stream. What will not reliably save data
- Do not assume that making the player window smaller reduces the downloaded stream; that is not established as a dependable data-saving method.
- Do not assume every cartoon uses the same bitrate. Even at a similar resolution, encoding and motion can affect the amount delivered.
- Do not apply a claimed percentage saving unless it comes from a comparison directly relevant to your service and settings. The figures above are service estimates or scoped guidance, not a universal comparison.
Separate buffering from a data cap
A metered connection limits how much data you can use. Buffering means playback cannot keep up reliably at the selected quality. Lowering quality may improve stability as well as reduce use, but the two problems are different: a faster connection does not necessarily increase a data allowance, and a larger allowance does not necessarily fix a weak or inconsistent connection.
